My birthday present: 1984 Subaru GL

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I have recently come to own a 1984 Subaru GL, my brother found it in a neighbors barn and got it for me for my birthday(yes, I have the coolest brother ever). I've always been fond of older Japanese cars, and I have to say, this thing is really cool! The only problem is that prior to its being parked in 2004 the car was in a pretty nasty accident that rendered the passenger side door completely useless. Does anyone on here know where I could find a passenger side door and fender? I've scoured the google, and my step dad, who is an autobody repairman, has called almost all of his connections with no luck. I'd like to fix this car up and use it as my summer ride, it runs really good, and only has 43k miles on it. It is worth it, right?

This will just buff out right?

Gen 2 Brat doors will fit, just have to swap glass. Gen 2 brat and wagon fenders and doors, '82 thru '87 for Brat and '81? or '82 thru '84 for wagon will interchange. wagon doors will not swap.

You could try your local bone yards but I think you are going to have to have something shipped from the southwest or west coast unless you know someone that is parting theirs out.

Looks like a nice car, minus damage, for a NY car.

If you're patient and keep your eyes open, something will come along, otherwise you're gonna have to take Mykeys advice.

look on the forum under parts for sale i think someone is parting one out

wagon doors will not fit, only brat hatchback and coupe doors are long enough

I cant help with parts but pretty neat car. Its definately worth it. Nice find on your brothers part. Id agree he is one of the cooler brothees lol

Thanks for your replies everyone. I've been working on this car all afternoon, and I currently have the passenger side door off and split in half. I hoping to straighten out the skin as best I can, and then weld it back together. Hopefully I can get the door at least workable, and look for a straight/good replacement in the mean time.

Nice looking B'day present!!!!! Even with the mangled door.

I'm surprised the window glass is still intact. That's a hard hit.

Former co-workers in-laws were auto body repair specialists. I've seen them restore things like that.

Seeing as you have the door split, you should be able to get it back close to where it should be. The side impact beam is going to be a little tricky, but it can be corrected.

Sure wish I had spent more time around them, maybe learned some things....

edit;

Ok... So why did the type go bold all on it's own?????

Hatch doors have a reinforcement beam that Brat and coupe doors lack.. FYI.

Best barn find, wreck save I have seen in a long time.

Parts are out west... you will find them.

only 43k miles on odometer.. wow... Excellent.

Thanks everyone for your replies, looks like I found a door in Washington from a member on this sight! Also, looks like I may have found a fender in New Mexico. Now I wait!

I litterly said OOF  when I scrolled from the nice pics to the passenger side pic.

Poor car, at least its getting taken care of!

Let me know what you need and ill see what I can do. I have a ton of parts for that same year.

Ha yeah it was a nasty hit, thankfully it only bent the rocker a little.

OK cool thanks! I still need a passenger side fender and a wheel.

That shouldn't be a problem. Pm your address and we'll work out the shipping cost

Nice car however with that few miles the rubber bits on the car might be getting a bit dry rotted.Make sure to check all hoses, belts, and seals before taking it on its maiden voyage.Sometimes having little miles is almost as bad as having tons of miles.

Almost as jealous for that shop lift as i am for that sweet hatch! Nice find! Any work required is well worth it, so I'm glad to see you're already well underway with repairing it.

Thanks everyone. Got the door, and my Stepdad helped me straighten out the fender as best as we could (he is quite skilled with a body hammer). Now I just need to weld a pull tab onto the rocker panel and get that straightened out and the car should be all sealed up for the elements.

Thanks! I've been having a lot of fun working on it, the shop is my stepdads, he's a auto body repairman.

Thanks! I will keep that in mind. I noticed the CV boots are cracked, and in need of replacement.
