How to keep your subaru alive by John Muir

Featured Replies

Does anyone have a spare copy of this book around?

All I have is a chiltons and I am about ready to burn it.

Let me know.

me too, I checked on amazon and there is only one used copy for a $100 bucks

They pop up from time to time on e-bay, and at used book stores. I got mine from e-bay for about 25.00.

If this helps:

I did a search on John Muir Publications and it appears there are some other books out there by them, so I assume they are still around.

Check out www.powells.com. They are based in Portland, Oregon...When you find the book you want, you can enter your email address and as soon as they get a copy of the book in, they'll e-mail you.

Hope that helps!

I got my copy there for 12 bucks

Go down to Knecht's on 9th street (next to Al Hutchison Auto Center, and across from Randy Jones Chevrolet) and get a Haynes manual, they are only like 15 bucks and are a lot better than the Chiltons. If you can find a Clymer manual in a used book store those are good as well, I had one for my Datsun. I have one that is for a Subaru but it's 71-82, and I dunno if they have one for your car or not. Best bet is a Haynes from Knechts....

Also try www.books4cars.com. In addition, the Bentley Subaru manual covers up to 1984 and is most likely the very best manual out there (it's a re-hash of the factory manual). Books4cars has Vol. 2 of HTKYSA for $39.95 plus shipping. A bit pricey, but it seems to be in stock. (Look in after-market section of Subaru manuals).

Try your library - I've got the one from Eugene public library checked out right now.

I like to have a variety of opinions, so I have the FSM off Finleyweb, a Haynes and I use Alldata from the public library. My advice - find a FSM! They show up on Ebay regualarly.

I agree with Andrew (Hondasuks). I've got Haynes, Chilton, FSM, and "...Subaru Alive". The FSM and Haynes have been the most useful, especially as a reference. "...Subaru Alive" is a good read and very informative, but I usually go to the Haynes or FSM for a quick piece of info I need to look up.

I love the part where he advises you to celebrate finishing your repair by pouring a stiff one, rolling one, chopping one, saying a mantram, or one other thing. Oh, the joys of the early 70's when the love was free and the drugs didn't kill you!

I've got everthing but "keep your subaru alive" I find that I use them all. Like right now, I'm doing wiring and I find some info in one book, some other in another etc. A times, my shop looks more liek a library than anything.

I guess my point is, you can never have too many manuals

I think you'd like my library...er garage!!

One of our Board members scanned the HTKYSA vol 2 book a couple years back. If anyone knows him, you might want to try to hook him up with the poster.

I think that all of these books have their plusses and minuses. My all-time favorite car book is a general repair manual published by Readers Digest of all people.

I agree that the old Clymers were awesome. I also owned the Datsun manual mentioned above. Excellent coverage of the Hitatchi carbs. DAMN, I wish I could have that one back...

If you like the FSM, you'll love the Bentley manual. Bentley rewrote the FSM in exacting detail and in more sensible language. Very rare and usually expensive--but worth every penny.

Ah, the 70's, when love didn't kill you either!!

Thanks everyone, I think I am going to try a few of these Ideas. Already checked in with Powells, going after a haynes, and looking for a clymer.

Plus some free love and drugs that wont kill me!
