The disputed weight factor....and some lowering stuff....

What if...you could, in 1986, take delivery of a GL-10 wagon....that was converted from 3AT 2WD, to 5SPD Full Time 4WD....with low stiff springs...and about 7 gallons of 93 octane fuel in it...and some other little goodies...well, you'd have MY GL-10 wagon!! Oh its TURBO too. :-p

Where? Clay Hair Motorsports. When? About 1 hr ago. Why? Cuz I had the shop ALL TO MYSELF! :evil: Many evil things transpired.....muhuhhahahah!!

No driver, no tools, no extras (mostly...some things, like a few CDs, some change, and some wiring left over from a sound system *power bar, power interverter and adapter, prolly about 10 lbs total* were left in, due to it taking so long to totally remove those items....I got lazy after I got the other stuff out. lol. Again, had about 7 gallons of fuel in....2 bars on the digi dash indicator...

 

And....i fixed the spring perches, and installed the taller XT 2wd Turbo 5spd 1985 spec rear struts.

Ive not been able to see how it handles....if its the same or different, since it IS riding about 1.5 - 2 inches higher in the back, and about 1/2 - 3/4 more in the front.....more tests tomorrow.

That's awesome! I was at the dump and had the lady yell out the weight to me - "about 2800 pounds" was what I got. This was in my '90 Loyale, all stripped out with me weighing in at about 240 at that time (down to 195 thanks Atkins :brow: ).

 

Only word of caution I have is on that flex-pipe. They don't last worth sh*t, but it certainly is easy to replace ;)

WJM: Ive been following your EA82 suspension posts for a while, and finally decided to speak up. My XT is a fairly good handler stock, but when funds allow, ill be doing the same suspension mods you have done (provided they work). I cant wait to see the test results.

 

side note: what do you guys think an XT-T 2wd 5spd weighs?

Oh I did not have the spare or sparetire bar/turbo heatsheild thing on the car either.

 

I've drivin and XT...its better than the 4wd's stock, but not an RX. I think that on the same tires, all the 2wd's and XTs handle the same. XT6 i dont know....I do know that the DL with the BFG's on it handled very very suprisingly well with it being bone stock.

 

My GL-10 had more positive camber than the Dl for some reason, so it did not handle as well stock as the DL....The RX does really well even tho its got a good bit of positive.

 

Anyhow, The XT's will be pretty different to setup like my wagon. The front struts are shorter, and the rears are taller. At some point, I should take delivery of a 1986 XT turbo 5spd 2wd....I know that stock XT struts on a Leone will lower it a little it below the stock 2wd stuff, and lower alot past the 4wd stuff.

 

Well, long running test today, about 30 miles of driving today.

It's funny that you posted this Will as I just got my 1986 Subaru Service Manual Section 1 that I bought off eBay and noted the weights were notably lower for the 1986 cars than the 1989 cars listed in the service manual PDFs that are available. I was planning to post about it today. :)

 

According to the service manual, the 1986 GL-10 5-speed 4WD wagon has a curb weight of 2650 lbs (though yours maybe more or less due to the FT4WD tranny that wasn't available in 1986). The 1986 Subaru RX (only available as a 4WD 5-speed sedan) is 2520 lbs!!! :eek: That's 320 lbs lighter than my 1999 Impreza 2.5RS which is already over 300 lbs lighter than a 2002 WRX. Sounds like stock WRX acceleration shouldn't be that hard to obtain after all (if the drivetrain holds up anyway...LOL).

I didn't look to closely at the base DL and GL model weights, but I know on the RX, the 3-door hatchback is heavier than the 4-door sedan (mostly due to the extra glass needed for the hatchback vs a sedan rear window).

I think the 2300 is dry...no coolant, oil, fuel, etc....

 

Shane...i think those extra 14 lbs are from the stuff that I added to the car that I was too lazy to get out...loose change, CDs and cases, and batteries....and a mojor weight...that 4.1 surround system wiring, power adapert and crap is still in there.

 

Then again, I dont really think the Single range 4wd vs FT4wd wight should be different really...maybe a tad...like, 5 lbs maybe....Eh, Im happy with it. Its about 200 lbs lighter than I expected.

 

According to the math, I ONLY need 195 HP at the crank to be as fast as a stock WRX...Or...137.5 HP at the wheels to do it....by the conversion from Dyno day...thats 196.5 Crank HP. So, Im shotting for the 200 HP mark.

According to the owners manual, they list it at 2,300lbs! Could the 2,520lbs number be a dry weight?

 

Dry weights are lighter than wet/curb weights. If anything, I'd say the manual may be listing a dry weight instead (the number I quoted came from the factory service manual and specifically says "curb weight" which is ready to run with all fluids filled).

Sheesh mine is a PIG then! I weighed in at 2780 (within 5lbs) Lifkit, tires, and tools are heavy :( That wasnt even with my come-a-long, chain or shovel.

 

I believe the 87 and newer cars are just heavier even stock vs stock. Several of the changes made in 1987 can affect the weight of the car (for example, I'm sure the FT4WD drivetrain is heavier than the PT4WD drivetrain). Plus, the 87+ bumper beams are heavier for better crash protection, IIRC (someone mentioned that when I was asking around here about bumper interchangability).

 

I'd brag that I'll lose some weight doing the RWD conversion, but I'll just be adding it right back with the 5-lug swap (especially since the XT6 rotors are larger).

The Buggy is suppose to weigh in at #1275 but I added a few things........:brow:

 

I'm headed to the scales this weekend and that's what I'm guessing anyway.

Yeah, but I can't really do that in and stay in Street Modified for autocross...LOL ;)

 

Of course, I could always run A-Modified or E-Modified. As long as a real AM or EM car doesn't show up, I should do just fine...LMAO!

 

I do, have to admit, though, your car looks very cool that way! :D

my 92 loyale with me ,dog ,tools , ect..2765 lbs ( municiple dump scale ).I think me, dog, tools, ect = about +250lbs. guestimate 2515 lbs. my car is gutted. If it don't make your car go forward it's out of there.

 

nice shop but, the Franken strut scares me. yikes

i must have the lightest one here, then... mines gutted to hell, so how do you do the power to weight math? i only need 50 mor hp to beat a what what? hehe

 

The easiest method is the mathematical equivalent of an analogy (i.e., weight1 is to power1 as weight2 is to power2):

 

weight1 / power1 = weight2 / power2

 

So for example, my 1986 RX lists at 2520 lbs and my 1999 2.5RS lists at 2840 lbs. They also list at 111 hp and 165 hp respectively (keep in mind you could also do "torque/weight" ratio comparison using the same method). Say I want to calculate how much hp the RX needs to have the same power/weight ratio as the 2.5RS. I plug in the numbers that are known and leave the unknown (the required hp for the RX) as "x" and come up with:

 

2520 / x = 2840 / 165

 

Now the easiest way to eliminate fractions when they make up both sides of an equation is to cross multiply which means that 2840 times x is equal to 2520 times 165 (multiply each numerator by the opposite side's denominator). That leaves us:

 

2840x = 415800

 

Divide both sides by 2840 and get:

 

x = 146.4 (rounded off)

 

So an 1986 RX needs to make 146.4 hp to have roughly the same power/weight ratio as a stock 1999 2.5RS. :D
