July 5, 200421 yr Mine backfires pretty consistently when shifting from first and second. as well as when using the engine to slow. is that common? I am less than stoked about it... chicks dont dig sputtery exhaust noise. what can I do to remedy this???
July 5, 200421 yr Leak in your exhaust system. Try putting some quarters in the Air Suction Valve supply pipes - where they screw into the valves. GD
July 5, 200421 yr couild be a bad distibutor cap or wires. to check the wires, open the hood when it is dark and if you see a light show around the wires time to change.
July 5, 200421 yr I have numerous exhaust leaks on my ea81 and she backfires pretty bad too. So until I save enough money to have the exhaust system replaced I disconnected the air suction valve. It helps with the really loud bangs! I did not use the quarter trick, I just disconnected the pipe where it connects to the air filter housing and plugged it up.
July 5, 200421 yr Yup, I vote for a leaky exhaust system too. Going to finish my exhaust today. Ya know what's fun: as I'm coming up on a pedestrian, I'll sit on the throttle where it doesn't make too much noise and when I'm right next to them, I jab the throttle and watch them jump 3 feet in the air!
July 5, 200421 yr Let me see - with a name like 420, maybe you crossed a wire or two? - but it's probably an exhaust leak.
July 6, 200421 yr Yup, thats exhaust leaks. My EA82 GL had a header that was rusting out, as well as the rest of the pipes, and I removed everthing from the cat back (now thats a preformance exhaust!) and it would throw flames out the back of the cat when you let off on the gas. i guess its too much oxygen entering the catilitic converter that causes the backfiring.
March 15, 200620 yr I tried the "search" feature, ya ought to try it sometime, works real well, found you this has a picture of one and some good info air suction valve
March 16, 200620 yr I tried the search function too (I feel so grown up!) You must mean this picture:
March 16, 200620 yr sorry you missed itthis is what I refered to That's actually great news. I have been wondering what that stupid thing is and does... I learn something new every day. Jordan
March 16, 200620 yr can you remove the air suction valve with no ill effects? I dont like driving a CARBED four pot and you can't find engine because of maze of vacuum lines(exagerated) why would any one in their right mind want to get rid of backfiring? I cut the exhaust off after the first muffler and I intentially make it backfire/pop/rumble...
