December 4, 200421 yr That "setup" price is going to be a common problem for engines that don't have the aftermarket support of an EJ20T or B18C1...companies like ARP (or AEM, Greddy, Neuspeed, etc) just hasn't gotten around to making stuff for our cars because there has been no demand. So we are relegated to Home Depot, DIY and custom fabrication that just don't quite get the reliability/performance/cost benifit that others get. We will never see the aftermarket support that those more popular engines get...but without having someone pull the trigger on something like this, we'll never even take steps forward. Having said all that...I can't afford to buy head studs for that price. Bring it down SEVERAL hundred and I'd be into the idea. It's just like using www.emachineshop.com Have 'em build one thing and it'll cost an arm and a leg. Have 'em build 1,000...and each is super cheap.

The setup charge for those were the cost of creating a digital file that their machines could use. Fortuantely for us, Skip stepped forward and created that file and sent it to the guy in So Cal, now we can get them at the same cost as any others. It's too bad that I never inherited my Uncle's machine shop, I'd have these turned out in a heart beat.
December 4, 200421 yr Not to get off track with this subject but I thought Paeco was just a one man operation. Everytime I used to call there, the same guy answered and it was his business. :-\ So I always assumed that Paeco Industries is basically a distributor. He just has good resources. I know I could be way off though. Even their website seems to have remained the same for ages. http://www.paeco.com/ Sort of like how Mike Shields used to do it with SPD Tuning (if he isn't still doing it).
December 4, 200421 yr I would think that (almost) any studs would be much better than bolts, and the heat treating is somewhat an expensive luxury needed mostly by those living on the edge. I would like to have studs that had limited stretch, but would settle for consistant, and possibly extra, clamping force. Just a weird thought from a tired brain: What about cryo treating?
December 4, 200421 yr RE: Cryo treatment - When I first heard about it, it kind of sounded like voodoo. The recommended site talked a good talk, though. Given that if you didn't know how heat treating works that it would also sound like voodoo, I decided to keep an open mind. Just thought it was worth throwing out to see whether the idea crashed and burned or not. Second thought: How about a good grade of stainless steel? Again, not necessarily an improvement as far as modulus of elasticity, but should be in tensile strength and corrosion resistance. Re: Timeserts - Maybe a consortium of people wanting to go this route could pony-up a pot of money to buy the tools. Prob a pain to organize, but could amortize the expense.
December 5, 200421 yr my old metal shop teacher here in longview has all the cryo treating stuff he does cranks gun barrels you name it he treats it .. so if cryo is a option for anyone i might be able to get a tiny price break on it maybe

For 3 sets... $373.52 a piece For 5 sets... $323.32 a piece For 10 sets... $243.32 a piece There are 4 "parts" for every order... I'll outline them below. Washers: Each set needs 18 @ $.052 Nuts: Each set needs 18 @ $1.21 Off the shelf studs: Each set needs 6 @ 10.60 Custom studs: Each set needs 12.. 12 (1 set)= $549.60 36 (3 sets)= $861.60 60 (5 sets)= $1,188.00 120 (10 sets)= $1573.00 I've provided all the information I know. At this point, it is too late for me to get in on a group buy. However, if there are interested parties, i will pass on the information (contacts, prices, etc...) or maybe even help organize it. If this takes a while to get off the ground, I may be able to afford it. Keep in mind, shipping is not included in this. I would add $20 to each order to cover shipping. Also, I believe we would have to buy everything in bulk, then divide it out and ship. If 9 people are seriously interested, I will handle the groupbuy and shipping if you guys chip in an extra $15-$20 a piece for my efforts. I would then be able to front the rest to pick up the 10th set.

I have the tools in the proper size for stock EA82 Head Bolts. Its not really that expensive.. kinda depends on which dealer you use though
December 17, 200421 yr *sigh* peaco it is then. hmm.. I might want in on this too. I would love some ARP goodness but grade 8 studs to size would work good for me as the motor im building is not a top dollar unit. I dont evin have a vehicle to drop it in( yet:brow: ) keep me in the loop please

June 9, 200520 yr i've read through this post and i guess i'm out of the loop...what do these head studs offer? are they only viable for forced induction applications? do they offer anything for NA engines? may consider a set for the XT6 if they are that good, seems to be alot of talk about them. did we ever answer the re-usability question? can you pull them from a blown block and reinstall them on another? or can you pull them to do some block work and then reinstall in the same block?
