November 17, 200421 yr Hi all, looking for some advice regarding the ea81t engine. i am looking at replacing my 81 GL wagon, as it is rusting to pieces, and i am sick of welding the thing. Found a 83 turbo wagon, only two owners and no rust whatsoever. Just wondering what these engines are like for reliability, and whether i would be best to dump my non turbo motor in it? Also, i would be swapping the auto for my 4 speed, will i need to swap the diff etc as on the ea82 models?
November 17, 200421 yr Extremely reliable. If you do the 2 things every Sube owner must (change oil religiously, and never, ever, under any circumstances let it overheat), it should run as long as the non-turbo version. Emily http://www.ccrengines.com
November 17, 200421 yr if it smokes, it may be the seals in the wastegate, no big deal good move replacing the auto, it's crap
November 17, 200421 yr If you do drop the 4spd in, make sure you replace the clutch with the best and strongest you can get. The 4spd doesnt like the torque from the turbo Hopefully the engine has the upgraded turbo, with water cooling.
November 17, 200421 yr I beg to differ. The 84 T-Coupe I sold to Mr. Carb has it, and I have had 4 others that were also. When they first came out they were not water cooled, then the dealers called them back (not a recall) and refitted them with turbo's that were watercooled.

Not sure of wich ones got it for why, but my 84t wagon has a water cooled turbo. Does anyone know if any after market performance injecters are availible for the EA81 turbos?
November 17, 200421 yr Mine is very reliable. Make sure the cooling system is up to par (mine is not currently) I don't know of any injector upgrades
November 17, 200421 yr You can also upgrade the turbo by replacing it with one from a EA82T. Just make sure you use the crossover pipe and downpipe.
November 17, 200421 yr is there any advanteges from running an EA82 turbo? Given that one already has a Watercoooled EA81 turbo?
November 17, 200421 yr Do you have to use the DP and cross over pipe from the EA82T to use the turbo?
November 17, 200421 yr Turbone I think there was a recall on the non-watercooled turbo's and they just replaced the centersection with a the one with watercooling and CHIM the difference is a lil bit bigger turbo and also you have an easier time finding a turbo if that one goes bad and also better exhaust choices sorta
November 18, 200421 yr sorry Rob but I didn't see page 2 and also there was a Official Recall on that not a dealer call back
