What years Imprezas have the 2.2 engine?

Featured Replies

I've searched the net for a specs page that would tell me but I've turned up nothing. I don't know much about Imprezas, but I'm thinking that if I could find a used one with the 2.2 engine in it, it might make kind of a fun toy for either playing with at the drag strip bracket racing or I just read about a place not too far from me doing rallycross. Either one would be fun. Thanks for your help.

The early ones were only available with an automatic tranny. I don't think you could get a manual with a 2.2 until 96 or 97.

i think your right Doc. The EJ18 usually came with the auto, and has a higher redline, smaller engine and all, but kinda anemic, but the old under-the-hood- check solves all questions in 2 seconds.

You don't have to look under the hood, the grilles are different.

My wife's '97 has the early 2.2L engine and manual. My kid has a '93 (I think) with the 2.2L engine and manual also; I'm positive about the manual, but not sure of the engine or year. I'll update the post on Monday when he's back from Spokane (at the races this weekend....http://www.wmrra.com/). I checked with the kid and his Impz is a '96; has a manual; original engine (has the 2.2L designation below the rear tail-light). Sorry, the kid got such a good price on his car that I keep thinking that it's older than it really is.

Ed, if it has a manual and a 2.2, it was a conversion, not stock from the factory. Cleck the link in the second post www.cars101.com , look at the 93 or 94 model year of Impreza, you'll see that the 2.2 wasn't even available those years, the first year it was available was 95, and then only with an automatic.

Thanks for the info. Can any of you tell me if the 1.8 and 2.2 engines will interchange? Thanks again.

My 96 and 97 both have 5 speeds. . .

Hmmmm I recall it as follows:

In either 94 or 95, the 2.2 was only available on the Impreza LX with an AT.

then when the OBS came out in 95 it also had a 2.2

I belive in 1996 the Brighton had a 1.8 and all the rest had a 2.2.

So... my answer is ~95 or so to 2001 (but not the 2.5RS of course!)

In 1995 the 2.2L Impreza was in L and LX trim and only in AWD automatic...trust me, I have a 2.2L "L". You could get the 5-speed in 1996.

The grilles are different. The 2.2L engine cars have the subaru emblem with a "v" of sorts around it...kind of like gen 1 Brats and the like.

What about my friend's '93 L four door impreza? it's a five speed, AWD, and had the EJ18? (as far as the no-five-speed comment) Maybe it's just rare to find them. Maybe it was a conversion, but I doubt it... it was all completely stock outside of that... looked like some grandma owned it.

or maybe he was wrong about the year? I didn't check it myself.
