September 3, 200520 yr I heard tell of a 4.44 gear ratio and would like to know where it comes from and if it is a bolt in or major work, either is fine. can you tell me where to look. Thasnks Dale
September 4, 200520 yr only way to change your final drive ratio, is to use an external transfer case so you can use an external front diff (read: BIG work!)
September 5, 200520 yr ^ well, that's the easy way to change the final drive. There's a guy on the boards here who says he's got a 4.11 from a Legacy in an RX D/R. However, I don't believe any Subaru came with 4.44s, so getting them to work will be just like Numbchux said, with a divorced t-case setup. Even then, you're looking at custom CVs. Needless to say, it's a massive amount of work for little gain. The 3.90s aren't bad, especially with a 5SP D/R. And if you're going to go t-cased, 4.11s would be relatively easy - it's doubtful you'll need the reduction that a 4.44 would give you with a t-case.

Most are from people who sell their trannies they have left over from JDM imports. 4.44 gives you a 16% lower gear ratio overall so you could run 27's and have almost stock gearing.

I'd do this if I could do it AND D/R...
September 6, 200520 yr This thread has talk of 4.44's in an EA series 5MT swaped out of an EJ series gearbox. http://www.ausubaru.com/ausubaru/html/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4128
September 6, 200520 yr I guess I stand corrected! There's plenty of 4.44s to play with. Getting them into the tranny is some work, I take it, but at least there's Subaru gears to use.
September 6, 200520 yr I have a 5spd fulltime 4wd s/r tranny apart in my garage... if I could get some EJ parts I could compare and see what may work...
