November 12, 200520 yr I want to stick this LSD in my wagon, but I want to change this mystery fluid out for some new stuff. The dealer doesn't sell fluid for the legacy's viscous diff and the parts store just has GM, Chrysler, Ford stuff. What do you guys suggest I do?
November 12, 200520 yr If it is what i think it is, the LSD is a viscous coupling and not a LSD like we are used to thinking (cone clutches or clutch pack). that mystery fluid is silicon and made to last the life of the differntial, its not to be changed. nipper
November 13, 200520 yr Author Are you sure? The way I understand a viscous differential works is by shearing those long silicone molicules in half to get the desired limited slip characteristic. This would mean that the fluid would eventually break down and the diff would not work a well. Anyone have a FSM who is willing to clear this up?
November 13, 200520 yr The viscous coupler does not use the diff oil for fiction, the coupler has a viscous fluid sealed in it. Use any 75/90W oil, but I understand that synthetic is better, so maybe try Redline Shockproof.
November 13, 200520 yr Author so maybe try Redline Spockproof. Spockproof huh? Watch too many episodes of Star Trek lately? Thanks for the info though, no wonder they didn't have any fluid at the dealer!
November 13, 200520 yr The earlier LSD's (like the 3.70 LSD) used special LSD fluid, the newer VLSD's use regular fluid, the VLSD portion of the diff is sealed.
January 22, 200818 yr Author The earlier LSD's (like the 3.70 LSD) used special LSD fluid, the newer VLSD's use regular fluid, the VLSD portion of the diff is sealed. So now that I have changed differentials and have an EA82 clutch type LSD in my wagon, does it need a special fluid?
January 22, 200818 yr yup you need to get some LSD additive, I think you can get some from the dealer IIRC.
January 22, 200818 yr Wondering this myself. Is kendal required? I found a few posts of people trying 80-90 w/ additive but w/ no report back?
January 22, 200818 yr If it is not the viscous style lsd and needs the friction modifier, maybe you want to try the Subaru gear oil? Or maybe this stuff is for the STI's...
January 22, 200818 yr Author Can I use the friction modifier that I bought at Schucks, or should I use Subaru brand, or maybe redline oil?
January 23, 200818 yr Thats my question as well. But EVERY manufacture claims only theres will work. Origionally I had a diff guy till I started doing them myself for my drift car. He used mainly this certain type of lsd additive? Always worked for me. I actually was debating not dropping it in while reading the SUBARU ONLY FLUID. Not even just LSD ONLY, so some moron at jiffylube doesnt swap fluids. I am having issues so I havent really tried it much But ill let ya know if it fails?
January 26, 200818 yr Author Can I use the friction modifier that I bought at Schucks called Equa Torque, or should I use Subaru brand addative, or maybe redline LSD specific oil? I'm going to be refilling the diff this weekend. Does anyone have any experience with different brands of LSD addative and want to offer any advice?
January 26, 200818 yr I wonder if this is the same mystery fluid that subaru put in the power steering system on the XT6?
January 29, 200818 yr Author So I decided to put in the Schucks stuff. We'll see how it goes and I'll report back if anything goes wrong.
