jdm motor or jy?

Featured Replies

when i was cleaning my block tonight i saw some numbers scroibed in to the block. there are also some on my valve covers. could i have a jdm motor or junkyard replacement?

yes, i agree anythings possible.

but if it turns out to be one of those jdm motors, get it out of there as soon as possible. its a grenade waiting to go off.

they don't change the oil...however over here about 80% of the cars on the road are used jap imports and we don't have much problem with the engines that that didn't get an oil change till they hit the used car lots here.

thats not to say that a few of them don't go bang but its not generally a consideration when buying a used import vs used NZ new.

if the comp's are good and it dosen't make any untoward noises i wouldn't worry about it

I just bought a jdm motor that had been installed on a local car 50K miles ago. Transmission let go so the owner junked the car. I bought the engine and installed it in my '91 Legacy. Engine runs fine; after 50k of "break in" I would expect I'll get a few more good miles out of it. Wish me luck.

I have an EA71 JDM engine in my '80 wagon. It came with a bellhousing and flywheel to couple to an EA81 tranny. It runs pretty strong for a subaru motor. Only problem I have ever had with it or the motor it replaced was a stuck thermostat which overheated on the freeway and blew a head gasket. Milled the head and resealed the motor, glasspack, K and N, 2wd disty, Accel coil, and it'll squack em in third in 4wd.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does JDM stand for? I've seen that thrown around so much but I don't really know. I assume the "J" is "Japan".

well i think the morot is going to get a full rebuild, i pulled the motor to do headgaskets. i didn't think much of the oil and water mix sitting in the oil pan so i didn't drain it like i should have, now the crank and connectingrods are rusted to shi*. but the crank spins with a short 3/8 rachet, with little effort.

You're nuts...

I want video proof.

I'll see what I can do. I can try to get some pix of the tranny I just blew. BTW, HATCHY is a witness.
