I don't see many around. Only seen two pics of ones done up to offroad. Is there a reason? I mean, they are the same shape as just about every other offroad car. I thought they'd be the most popular new-gen subie to offroad.

 

Just a weird thought I had this morning...

They beat the snot out of their foresters in AU..... i think like 80% of the people on offroadsubarus.com drive foresters... maybe?

I dunno.. persanally a forester just looks like a plain ol' suv... those which people don't offroad anyhow, because they just buy them to flaunt the size, etc... It's much cooler to offroad your wagon, or hatch, or brat.... a forester is just another box.... visually that is. We all know that it's just a taller impreza wagon and that it's just as capable... but.. whatever i'm rambling...

I'd take my OBS over a forester any day offroad... mainly because i sit higher than a forester, with it's suspension

Yeah, on offroadsubarus.com they do have a few. But on AUSubaru theres only 1 or two people that seem to show off there forester tha is built to offroad. And I've seen 1 pic from the US.

 

I was just wondering.. I like Outbacks more too, but it's just weird how everyone seems to go for the outback over forester.

 

(everyone: I don't mean EVERYONE, I just mean most.)

The Forester does have the better approach angles, but its still based on a small car. It gets gimped cup holders, less room, and the trunks too small. Although it is sportier than our bigger Outbacks, sporty is just a synonymn for 'small' to me. My last car was a Lincoln, so thats my logic

Generally in Oz we dont have too many Foresters getting thrashed around is that they are too expensive as a starting point before you start to be adventurous

Ya, I think its the price of Foresters. Even the '98's are still pretty expensive, and they dont have a low-range either in the US... The 80's subarus are a much cheaper option here.

 

I'd setup an off-road forester if I had like $10k sitting around But there are other projects i'd rather do first, which is probably the case for most people...

Which ones? I have a 90 Lib with low range, but I throught it was pretty uncommen..

The early Forester 2L had a reasonable low range and the later 2.5 have the povvo low range.

I test drove a 01 forester the other day,, there was so much of a unstopable vibration in the shifter , it was down right scarry,,, and it was on a subaru lot , so i figured they had to know about the problem, the machanic there at the dealership said it was "normal" go figure:-\.

anyway, back to the subject, i have seen a forester with a 2 " lift ,, looked pretty cool:)

 

But it's just hard to beat the way an old GL looks lifted

At this situation (allmost a month), half of members in the club live in north Israel, so the club can't do nothing because it's too dangerous to offroad and half of the members stay on the shulters because the rockets.

Messed up stuff goes on in this world. It's amazing how lucky us Aussies, and other countrys like Australia, are and we don't even seem to relise it on a day to day basis. I do remember seeing a bunch of pics (might of been your club) with at least 4 Foresters. But they all looked stock. I guess they just aren't as popular as a Outback for offroading.

 

On a side note, whats the price difference of an Outback to Forester around the world?

Here in Aus the bottom of the line is like this from new, $32K for a Forester, $38K for a Outback.

I personally wouldnt ever offroad a forrester. Standard in the us is a auto tranny.. problem #1 problem #2 is the height of them. If I lifted a forrester as high as my GL wagon I'd be lookin at serious rollover issues.

 

Problem #3 Cost.. why pay 10 grand for a car with an auto in it, and then more money to lift it. Not to mention you'd be running a interference engine.

 

When I snap a timing belt, its nice to know I can put one on in 10 minutes and it will run. 2.5L blows a belt, plan on pullin the heads and puttin new valves in.

just look at the aus lifted libs they are basically a lifted outback.a few lifted fozza's in Qld.in the end i think it comes down to space,more room in a outback/lib,and personal choice.From what i've seen i reckon they are both very capable offroad.

Not wanting to start a war of words but, by what i have seen, there are alot of (early) Foresters in wrecking yards that have been rolled over which according to the wreckers was common when pushed hard through corners. There was also a member of our Suby club that rolled their Forester which was unlifted. I also know there are many lifted ones getting around with no problems. The ones that are rolled make finding a good one harder and more expensive maybe a reason.

It would stand to reason that if you lift any vehicle, you would aquire new driving habits. Quick turns would be a thing of the past. My Toyota has the better part of 2 feet under the door sill. I don't spend time worrying about roll overs, I drive differently. More space between me and the person in front of me, less speed in the corners. Simple as that.

 

 

My OBS is literally 5 inches taller than a stock one. It handles the road very nicely. I have no fear of it rolling, I'm positive it will spin out first.
