found an 80 Gl wagon in pretty nice shape and im trying to figure out what she's worth. body is straight except one dent in the front left quarter panel which could be pounded out. interior is clean except the dash is cracked, front seats are a bit torn, and the dash heater vents could use replacing. it has 100k on it, and as far as i know doesnt really have any mechanical problems. figures i'd turn this one over to the experts...what do ya'll think?? shouldi go for it, if so, how much should i give 'em??

Not much. If it's 4WD, then it's a single range 1600, and if it's 2WD it might be an 1800. Still - not very desireable unless you really like the looks of it. 2WD's aren't very desireable anyway, and 1600 single range's aren't really sought after either. I would say $500 or less depending on condition, and tending toward "less". Personally I wouldn't buy it at any cost as it wouldn't have a single part I could use - even if it has an EA81 in it, it's a small intake valve, solid lifter engine..... not the desireable ones I look for.

i`d say $500ish if the body is rust free or near it.

 

1600 single ranges are fine for road use, and get great milage. 2wd 5sp's are also nice for milage and have a little more power than the 4wds.

I paid $100 for the one that I got for my daughter. 4 Speed single range 4WD, 1600 EA71. It needs some work but, it should be good for a first car for a teenager.

I asked the same question and loved the reply I got:

 

Remember, this car is 26 years old... 26 yrs. They should be paying us to take it away... even if it is driveable.

 

So my target rate is no more then $100 with a basic problem, axel, bearing, brake.. etc...

 

So, shoot for $300, ... $400 ish...running... sure, less would be better but the owner may be proud of what he has and won't go less... so... it depends on how bad you wan't it, how often a car like that comes around and how handy you are with the tools cause at 26 yrs... it will be needing some loving time.

 

A running subaru is like 600 here and beat too near death... once in awhile a deal comes up and gone in a flash..... so 400-500 would be a deal but not braging rights.

I don't know what everybody's problem with the ea71 is, especially when you consider in stock form the ea81 only has 4 more hp

with a few easy common upgrades, it will serve fine and feel like it has more power and better sound

1. NO CATS, it's old enough NOT required

2. swap in electronic ignition

3. swap in XT6 alt

4. swap in weber

 

the single range, although different, doesn't seem to have the quirks of the d/r, and is adequate on mud roads in 2 and 3 gear

4 gear is great for cruising

I don't know what everybody's problem with the ea71 is

 

Problem is the weird bell-housing and noisy solid lifters. Can't even put in a D/R unless you source a really rare side-starter EA71 bell-housing, and even then there is no 225mm flywheel for the EA71 so you are stuck with the 2WD clutch.

 

As an engine the EA71 is fine - I dislike it's non-lego-ness with respect to later models. So many things changed in 82, that anything before that year requires major headache's to upgrade.

For compairison:

I got my clean straight 88 Rx in almost running(needed battery clamps:banana: ) for $400.

 

I got my 87 carbbed D/R wagon in slight rust but RUNNING condition (I even tried to drive it home till it blew that little PITA bypass coolant hose under the intake... ) for.... $200

 

My thoughts. Rust free... $400 or less... Rust takes off $200, any worse shape... $100.. Feel the guy out. and heres the trick. BE A wongleflute. I always am, no matter how bad I feel I'm lowballing, it has NEVER gotten me kicked squa in the nutts. You offer too high and you can never go back, so start low, really low... ohh and if they think the lifter noise is a rod knock, or that the snapped timing belts mean new motor(not this car mind you) SUPPORT that though and play dumb:eek: Damn I'm Evil:dead:
