roof rack question

Featured Replies

i have a roof rack from a another car i want to install on my loyale. does anyone know if there were nuts underneth the roof where the rack bolted to? and what i sould use for sealent? i was thinking rtv...

There's no nuts in the roof. I believe the stock setup uses something like sheet metal screws. As far as sealant, I dunno.

Btw, wait longer than 30 minutes for a reply :-p

There are no nuts, just self tapping screws that hold the rack on, and from what I remember they don't have any sort of sealent, just a small rubber gasket that resembles a washer that goes on the screw.

On the aftermarket rack I have I used black rtv silicone on the screws and a little on top of them, no leaks yet.... 2 years later.

Thought you would have installed that weeks ago for your trips up the hill.

The screws in the bag are the one's that came off the origianl car.

Don't remember what they were though.

The outer rails are supposed to have nylon inserts, the inners are just sheetmetal screws. Any sealer should work.

couldnt wait thirty minutes cause i wanted it then! but i went to sherwood upullit and found a loyale with a rack to see how they worked. and there was a snowboard attatchment already on it and they keys for it were in the glove box. nice 15$ :headbang: as for you guys. there was a std hatch 4wd i think i remember it was 4wd. a gl-10 XT. and an ea81 sedan and random other ea81 stuff there.

The stock roof racks I have removed had Rivnuts on the outer rails. They used blind ones. Rivnuts are sort of like pop rivets, but leave a threaded hole for a machine screw to got into. The installation tool uses a tough threaded rod to pull the rivnut like the "nail" of a pop rivet. After the pull, you unscrew the rod, and you have a nice strong anchor point.

My 87 Loyale wgn had rivnuts on it also, but they were on all 4 rails. I installed rails on my 93 Loyale wgn and mounted a roof basket. I drilled and installed heavy pop rivits. It gives you a real queasy feeling when drilling holes into your car roof. LOL:slobber: I coated the rivits with silicone and the bottom of the rails. Wiped off any excess and it looked good. I have done this to my Justy also with no problems.

If you didn't do it right, you can drill them out.:slobber: If that happens , use weld nuts, they work like rivenuts, but when you unscrew the roof rack, you can take them back out. They're rubber, with a threaded brass insert, but they squish up when you tighten them, sealing the hole. They're strong and you can find them at hardware stores. The rivenut is made out of aluminum. I don't trust them for holding spoilers, roofracks, etc., but that's just my opinion.
