January 1, 200719 yr Hi everybody! Happy new year! What is everyones preferances on regular oil, and why? I tried to search this up, but somehow got nothin- maybe the system has a hangover! "Oil recomendations for 120k EA82", in Chicago this time of the year? Same as i'm running now in the EA cars: 10W 30W. Castroil at Wallmart, 5 qts. for ten bucks or less. I should add that the 5 qt. containers of Valvoline often is about the same price at times. I run them both as I believe they're both good oils, add price and availability, it's a deal on these containers. Hell, if I found it in 5 galllon containers, i'd probably buy it too.
January 1, 200719 yr When it comes to oil, just use a decent brand. Valvoline, Havoline, Castrol, etc and change it regularly. It's good to stick with one brand but with a used car it's pointless unless you know what the previous owner used. Stay away from the synthetic oils or blends unless the engine only has 2 miles on it. All the high mileage, off road, extreme use, blends are crap to me, just seams like a marketing scam. In the winter use 5w30, in the summer 10w30 or 10w40. Basically use the oil chart in the repair manuals. I've been using Havoline 5w30 in all my vehicles with no issues.
January 1, 200719 yr this comes up all the time and never gets good results, just oppinions and a few good links, that's why you didn't find anything. if you want info on oil, search google or bobistheoilguy and similar sites. you're asking the wrong question, what you're asking doesn't matter. the EA82 has HLA's in the valve train, the most important thing you can do with your oil is change it often. that is far more important than what brand you use. if the history is unknown, keep an eye on it and change it more often than you might normally do.
January 1, 200719 yr FYI, the manual recommends not driving highway speeds if running 5W-30. I usually do 10W-30 in the winter, and 10W-40 in the summer. Just pick a decent brand.
January 2, 200719 yr you're asking the wrong question, what you're asking doesn't matter. the EA82 has HLA's in the valve train, the most important thing you can do with your oil is change it often. that is far more important than what brand you use. if the history is unknown, keep an eye on it and change it more often than you might normally do. Gary nailed it. Just be sure to stick with a reputable brand and change it often and on a regular schedule. After resealing the oil pump I switched to Valvoline 15W40 All-Fleet and the engine and HLAs have been uber-happy ever since. I run it year-round in northern MN (well below zero at times in the winter), no need to be constantly switching weights.
January 2, 200719 yr ... Just be sure to stick with a reputable brand and change it often and on a regular schedule.... Yes! ... I Use Motul 20W-50 Always (No Snow in Tropics) and my EA82 has over 245K With that Brand of Oil, due to its Mineral Base (No Synth, No Petrol.) my EA82 Performs Smoother, and the "Tick of Death" is Almost Gone...
January 4, 200719 yr I normally run valvoline 10-40 in my lifted wagon.. Seems to do great, like gary said, as long as you change it often, you are good to go..
January 4, 200719 yr 15w40 fleet oil year round I had never tried 15W40 fleet before my Subie, but now I'm sold on it for higher mileage engines.
