roll pin replacement?

alright, so yesterday i replaced my front axle on my EA82. i put her in reverse, and lo and behold, i hear one clunk, then another, then some lovely grinding noises. i take everything apart, and realize that they had given me an axle with an inner diameter that was like 1/8 an inch bigger than my old one. fantastic. luckily nothign was stripped. so i put the old one back on and realize that i had absolutely shattered my roll pin when i tried to drive on teh old one. after checking every auto parts store within 30 miles, no one can give me a roll pin of 6mm.

 

my question is this. can i temporarily put 2" x 1/4" nut and bolt in there to hold it on, and second, what size is that roll pin supposed to be?

That would pronably work, I just wouldn't drive very fast maybe. They gave you an axle for a Turbo, 25 spline. You need one with 23 splines.

i believe a lot of hardware stores carry roll pins, i've gone to Home Depot and they've had them (in a pinch)

 

i just usually save the roll pins from the old axles... they dont need the pins for a core

The rear of my hatch has bolts holding the axles. Easier to replace than roll pins.

Use Nyloc nuts to keep them from backing off.

i Had the same thing happen to me , you have to count the splines, my gl was 25 splines, a regular 1/4 inch bolts should work temporarily, it isn't hardened like the roll pin, I'm not sure of the shear strength..but if you have the proper spline drive shaft, the roll pin just retains the shaft

i use a couple plastic zip ties in mine... and they still pull the insides out of doj's before brealing the zip tie

 

get yourself a 23 spline axle

 

and stop worrying!

As those above have said, the roll pin is not normally subject to any significant forces - the splines handle ALL the load. The roll pin is there to prevent the axle from sliding along the splines and possibly falling off.

 

That said, anything that can prevent it from sliding will work. I actually like the ziptie idea, myself.

 

Another thing you'll want to do is to grease up the splines when you're putting things together - Molybdenum is good to use on metal to metal joints like that. It helps make things go together easier, and they'll be easier to take apart down the road.

I figure they use a spring clip similar to honduh's or something of that nature. I just can't talk my friend into letting me pull an axle to find out.

Why do you keep talking about me ??? :grin: That's what I had in one side for about a year... till I found the roll pin and had a good weather day to put it in.

 

Could be like a VW CV joint -- 6 bolts that use a splined 12 point internal hex socket thingy that costs $15 just to get the thing apart.... Subarus have the easiest axles I've ever worked on, except for the 23/25 spline confusion.
