Paint question... Black hood?

Featured Replies

Ok, now that my hood has a huge bog crack, faded paint, and a huge burnt patch on it.. I think it's time it gets a paint. Well, in this case I'm going to get another one and paint that. I know a panel beater/painter and she's willing to help after a heap of work I done on her car trailer. So it is going to end up a professional looking job. Just want to know what you think about the color.

Back to red, or go to black? I also need to paint to roof, but theres no way that is going to be black, way to hot in Australia for that. So I'm thinking it will be red again.

Oh, and I've photochopped the wheels black while I'm there because thats how I want to paint them when I figure out how to remove the original paint and clear coat. Not so sure on the wheels after all.. Argh... Can't make up my mind...

But I'm thinking I don't like the black hood.

paint the center of the raised portion where it tapers down to the grille. paint it with a satin black like the old mopar color.

follow the contours of hte hood and that will look good! it will set off the trim around the doors and the tonneau cover

Personally I like the black hood with different color car.

I do liek the following the contours idea.. But I'm starting to just like the silver rims and plain red..

I think my mind changes to often for me to do anytihng but plain.

I think you should leave the wheels silver with either hood color option. Those wheels just plain look sexy on there.

Yeah, I want a set of 27x9.5R15 swampers for those wheels.. But I don't think I want that hardcore of a tread for this car.. I'm building a buggy which I will tow to 4x4 spots with the Brumby so I'm thinking some A/T's would be nice.. Just can't find 235/70R15's or anything under 28.8" for a 15" wheel :(

I'm starting to think just silver and red. I did want to do something new, but it looks good how it is right now. So, hmm..

I like the silver wheels on red color scheme myself, it is a classic for a darn good reason if you ask me...

BUT, I also really like the black contrast idea, and the wheels look GREAT on the Brumby with the black paint, if you ask me.. the black hood, in reality won't be so starkly "different" looking as in the photochop, and I think it will combine with the black plastic trim that is on the vehicle either way in a nice, nice looking manner. In other words, with the black and silver wheels, all the black already on the car almost begs you to paint the hood black...

The contour idea would work as well.. I say go for it, hood and wheels. the satin black color idea is intriguing as well, for the hood. Have you looked into Rustoleum'ing the whole vehicle?

I would stay with red on the hood. The Brumby looks mighty sharp red to me. If you go with black do the raised portion. Just my opinion.

I'm thinking that a set of racing stripes down the middle of the hood would be good. Two black fat ones:headbang:

red on the hood and silver on the wheels... that brumby looks great that way...

Like this?

My headlight surrounds are now black BTW, so although it looks like it continues from the grill good the black is all there now.

I was thinking about the black wheels a sec ago and thought, nah don't like them.. Then I looked at the photochop and I thought, yeah they look pretty mean..

Damn it.

Also I think that too... Just the Raised Part on Black will see Nice! :headbang:

REALLY digging the black and red contrast with the silvered accents of the bumper and roll bar, man...

Re paint the plastic trim on the sides and the thing looks like its had a renaissance. Seriously, you have built a MEAN truck, but a civilized one.. the red and black makes this guy look like Attilla the Hun in a finely tailored italian suit.

Black racing stripes with the black wheels. That's a cool look! :slobber:

I tried some of that Rustoleum paint around the bottom of the car yesterday. And today I peeled most of it off.. :-\

It's one thing being a tough resistant paint, but it's another thing completely being able to stick to other paint..

Nah, I'm sure it's because I painted it on a cold day and it was humid and then 12 hours later it rained.. Looks like the water got under the Rustoleum and now it's all crapped. Oh, and the Rustoleum done an awesome job at sticking to the masking tape I used, so good in fact I had to run a blade along next to it before I could take the tape off.. I'm going to try a masking shield next time and not worry so much about little overspray.. But now all I can do is wait for a sunny day.

Like....

subaru_brumby_blackstripeswheels.jpg

that?

line the front of the stripes up with the uprights of your bull-bar, or whatever you wanna call it.. in other words, move those same tripes out about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm)

You don't ask for much huh?? It took me like half an hour to do that last pic..

Haha.. I'll give it ago maybe next weekend.

I'm not actually requesting photochops, just making suggestions and voicing my opinion, heh.

Truth is I love your vehicle. I cant call it a car, truck doesnt feel quite right, I feel like a poseur :Flame: calling it a brumby too often but it isnt a Brat technically, either, so vehicle and brumby are my only two labels for it. thats one of the things I love about it. Whatever you call it, I am in awe of it, so the idea of you asking for ideas and thoughts gets me thinking, and i get a little over enthusiastic. Believe it or not, I *have* curbed my enthusiasm a good bit :o

This is a question I have asked myself and I ask other people I know sometimes...

If I were to paint the Brumby a new colour, what colour should it be?

My answer always comes back to the same everytime I look at it.

See, I have the same trouble. These cars look good in so many colors. For the hatch I've tossed around all black, yellow with black hood, a variation of wr blue, graphite. And probably a few I've forgotten, I think when the day comes time, I'm just gonna buy the paint and not look back.

My answer to that question is simple enough: do you like the idea of the red brumby?

If you don't actively want something different, then you save ALOT of time changing the color of the car. Even painting it a different red entirely is simpler than painting it blue.

Personally, I say that it was born red for a good enough reason to let it stay mostly red; but blue looks nice, white looks nice, the right silver looks nice.. so many to choose from...

If you have a color in mind to go for, then its probably worth it.. but if you are idly debating it, then I wouldn't think too long before deciding to just stick with some red color, probably fairly close to what it already is. Thats my two bits, anyhow.

Flair red is what my mind comes to every time.. It's just a great looking red..

I don't want to paint the whole car as I know I'll just scatch the new paint and feel bad.. So the old scratched paint looks sweet. It's just I need a new hood and the roof needs new paint as its flaking up and water is getting under it..

I'm going to just paint the roof and new hood red and like that... My noughbor is learning air brushing, so maybe some else will come for the roof or hood down the track.. She'll need some practice pieces..
