Alternative Carbies for the EA81?

I know its been absolutely forever since I've posted, or even set foot in the forums. Crap has been interesting, and the Brat has been parked for, gasp, just short of two years now.

 

I've now come back to a place in my life where I want to drive the ol dog again. The issue for it remaining parked all this time after the engine swap was the Weber. It simply didnt like the hi-po EA81 from CCR I guess. Wouldnt idle. Several disassemblies and cleanings later, still no juice, so she's sat till now. Now that I want to drive the bat again, I want to drive it, not screw with the carby.

 

What other carby options are there for the EA81 that I could bolt down and drive away? (save the Weber, and stock flavors)

I've got a built ea81 right now, that when I first put it in, I ran this on it...

it's a Holley 600 cfm (vac secondaries). I had to use a 4->2 bbl adapter plate, modified to fit the weber adapter. it idles great, and if I was running at 2500 rpms all the time, it would just scream (gravel pit :) )... unfortunately, for any kind of trail running, or plain street driving, it was a pain because you always had to get the revs so high to start from a full stop....

 

(I still have it and the 4->2 adapter for sale. (no airbox))

 

I went back the the weber, with larger jets... and some other mods. it totally kicks the crap outta all the others I've ran with webers....

Ive got a SU side draft off a Volvo Im looking to put on a EJ only interested in low end power for offroad, think it would work OK?

 

SU/Stromberg carbs (side draft) are what is called Variable Venturi carbs and all round pretty forgiving as far as running goes. What might trip you up is the size, as in almost too small. You would ideally get something the same size as your FI throttle body (seems to me I remember Jags coming with 2 1/2 inch 4 bolt flange SUs X2 on their 6 cylinder engines). See, the beauty of a variable venturi carb is no matter the throttle position the vacuum controlled venturi only opens up as far as the engine air flow demands, no more, no less. You can play with springs (above), or in the case of a SU, oil viscosity, to modify the opening rate of the venturi. Well worth a try!

Without any Adaptor Plate, if the Original Engine´s Carb, was the Hitachi, another Hitachi from Nissan (1.6L Sentra or Similars) Should Work there, Right Bolt on, but I´m not Sure about its Performance...

When my White EA82 Wagon´s Hitachi Carb Died, I Tried the Above Suggested Nissan Carb, My Subie felt soo Underpowered, but Might be due to the Jets... for an 1.6L engine... So, I Suggest to search for a 2.0L engine Hitachi Carb, Like the ones of some 80´s Light Trucks.

Rather than experimenting with weird carbs that haven't been tried - perhaps this is in your future - it runs sooooo awesome and has potential for upgradability like no other combination for the EA81. And the added benefit that myself and a few others have done it so it's not entirely a gamble:

I am glad he already responded; I was going to suggest GD's EA82 SPFI conversion for you.

 

Regarding the side draft carb; I don't see exactly how you could do it with only one carb; TWO side draft carbs would be difficult enough to set up in my mind (since they flow horizontally and the boxer's head breathes vertically..) But maybe you know something I don't.

 

A sidedraft carb is a REAL carb, though.. it really is vacuum powered fuel injection. The DGV is a nice machine, but the REAL weber is the DCOE sidedraft... The SU's and the hitachi knockoffs of them run great, too. (Datsuns all came with "SU" carbs; they were all manufactured by hitachi though.)

Okay, I guess I get your drift there...

 

What kind of diameter is the TB? Z-car SUs have a bore of about 40-42 mm, something on that order anyhow... maybe a tad less, but i dont THINK so.

 

If you are really interested I can find out; carb knowledge is all abstract to me so specific numbers aren't easy to recall off the top of my head. I keep my brain chock full of fuel injection info, no space for superfluous carburetor specifics.

It is really hard, at this late date, to justify going with a carb. The reason I say this is: parts. Carbs now are far from mainstream, there are only certain applications that still use carbs, and by going with what remains is the only way you are assured in getting something that you can tune into to your specific application. The SU carb is a pretty versitile thing, but please don't ask me where you would get parts, only Holley, and certain aftermarket Harley Davidson carbs, are what I would consider "reasonable". For me this is a tough call, I grew up with carbs, I spent about 10 years re-building them professionally, but like the blacksmith, it is pretty well over.

Join a Datsun forum or three....

 

We get parts all the time; "ZTherapy" is a company that sells performance rebuilt carbs, AND kits and videos on how to rebuild them yourself.

 

Or just mega-squirt the thing. Mega-Squirt == Easy Button.
