rear washer squirts during acceleration... ('98 Imp)

Recommended Posts

ok, this is starting to really annoy me now...

when I accelerate in the '98 Imp wagon the rear washer fluid starts squirting up on the window... it's not the motor, it's physics driven, so the faster I gun it the more water comes out and the higher on the back window it squirts...

this happened a few months ago and then stopped... so I kind of wrote it off as a fluke... but then I went through an Eco Wash automated car wash last week and the squirting started up again...

what's the deal? is there a valve somewhere that needs replacing? maybe the squirter motor is starting to go out?

other than it wasting lots of washer fluid and mudding up the back of the wagon it works fine when I trigger it on the column tree and purposely squirt some water up there...

where should I start looking for the issue?

I've never heard of this on a Subie, but I am familiar with it on 90-96 Nissan 300zx's. The 2 hood nozzles will dribble fluid on the hood under acceleration if their inline one-way check valves are stuck open. They are about a half inch in diameter and about three quarters of an inch long, including their inlet and outlet stems (entirely made of plastic) that the hose slides over. I suspect that they are spring loaded so that the valve will only open up when under pressure from the washer motor. There are two of them under the hood and inline just before the nozzles. They aren't expensive to buy. If there isn't a similar check valve on your Subie, and if no one else can come up with a cure, you might want to check this Nissan part out. It could solve your problem.

Found the above with the Search function. Mentions part# from Nissan but the last post also links to http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=20595&page=1&pp=10&highlight=rear+washer and Ferret references a check valve in the rear pillar.

I am very sorry (a given) but this is too cosmic not to post.

I never use the rear squirter on my wagon so

I plumbed the output through an extra egr solenoid I had.**

I then covertly routed the output through the rear trunk and

into my exhaust pipe just after the muffler.

When being followed a little too close (you know)

I simply hit the rear squirter and BAM clouds of steam and

spray. They think the old girl is about to

grenade and usually back off.

(Some light colored hair type girls don't - they turn on

their wipers and looks up in the blue sky for rain clouds??)

** I learned that the washer fluid would siphon out,

the valve prevents this.

It is wired in parallel with the pump.

If you can not find the check valve

this may be of help to you.

I run old used antifreeze in the bottle in the winter.

HAHAHAHA

It gets so excited it has to pee !!!

ROFL

But seriously my Honda used to do this when parked on my drive or accelerating. The addition of one of those check valves as described by gbhrps fixed the issue. My check valves came from an old prelude dumped out in the hills. Any parts store should carry them.

the nissan part may be the same OE manufacture for the valve.

My '96 Leg. OB does this too, has since I got it (2 years ago). I also never use the rear wiper or washer. I wasn't as creative as Skip tho, I just crimped it at the tank and forgot all about it.... but I really like Skip's idea 'cause their is no shortage of people trying to count the hairs on the back of my head! When I rode a motorcycle daily I used to push the centerstand down when I got tailgated at night, sent a show of sparks which got 'em backing off real fast. Haven't thought of a way to get my roo to do it...:Flame:
