aftermarket Gauge Q's

Featured Replies

so i got some equus gauges today and attempted to install them. the water temp screws into the coolant temp socket but it leaks like a Sob. whats the deal with that if it screws in it should'nt be leakin right!?

oh and whats the thread pattern for the oil pump pressure sensor?

thanks

Spokanesoob

That means it is probably not the same thread. I forget the names, but there are two threads that are very close and will thread together, but they aren't the same. Maybe someone else knows.

i had Teflon tape on the threads..... it seems like its coming out of the end where the capillary tube goes through its kinda frustrating when things don't work out

Capillary tube bulb needs a seat to seal against.

Most auto parts stores should sell them. Called mechanical temp gauge adaptor. should be a couple different sizes either 1/2 inch pipe or 3/8.

Equus uses 1/8'' NPT threads, most sensor fitting (including the ones on the oil pump) are BSPT, just like GD said. They will go in, but you will destroy the threads. Also, the body of the sensors needs to be connected to ground (engine) so you cannot use teflon tape to help it seal.

  • 1 year later...

What kind of engine are you putting this on? Not to hijack the thread, but hopefully my info will help.

I'm in the process of installing a mechanical oil pressure gauge and a capillary style temp gauge. I have an EA82, carbed.

I'm having issues on the Temp sensor because it is too long to let the threads even engage. It bottoms out on the inside of the coolant passageway in the engine. In the process of looking for a fitting to bump it out a ways, I figured out that the thread size is M16 x 1.5 for the Temp sensor. Now to find the correct fitting... Damn USA and metric availability :)

I second the question about the oil sender. What is the thread size for that one? It seems to be bigger than the Temp sensor.

Thanks

Yeah. You have to use the adapter's that came with your kit. They are not just adapters, they are the other half of what completes a sealed connection for your sender.

So,you have to find a adapter for your adapter.

I'm sure the original poster doesn't care anymore - being this thread is over a YEAR old. :-\

Good luck finding an adapter for a cap. tube - you will probably have to make something. The electric gauge's (like the stock unit in the cluster) have much smaller sending units that fit better - they are simply thermistor devices and don't have a lot of depth.

The oil pump has multiple ports for sending units or idiot lamp switches - the preferred port is 1/8" NPT on the EA82's and 1/8" BSPT on the EA81's. The stock sending unit can then be removed and the port plugged. I have a selection of the plugs for the larger port through buying new oil pumps over the years - they always come with the OP sending port plugged as the DL's didn't have OP gauges. You can also make a plug by cutting the end off the stock sending unit, tapping the hole in the brass to 1/8" NPT and inserting a standard pipe plug.

Thanks. All of that makes sense. Now I see the 1/8" plug, after you mention it. I tried removing it but the little sucker is seized and the 5mm allen hole is slightly stripped out. I might have to drill it and helli-coil it. Since it's facing down, it shouldn't get filings into the pump if I'm careful. Maybe it will even come out with a reversed bit before I even go all the way through. That would be rad.

For the temp adapter, I have to find a Male M16x1.5 to Female M16x1.5 fitting and modify it to seat the cap. sensor nicely. The only place around here with a selection of metric pressure fittings is CAT. We'll see...

Either that or find one that adapts to the adapters that came with the unit (like what was said above), but that is an extra piece in there and I'd like to do things a little more cleanly. We'll see...

Thanks again.

Try your local industrial supply houses. Most places that build hydraulic hose should have a vast array of fittings, many metric.

It just depends on what you are looking for. Oddball stuff in metric sizes is hard to come by in the states. I live in a large city (biggest in OR), and I needed some simple (so I thought) 6mm steel tubing. Had to get it shipped up from CA.... no one has a lot of this stuff and it's very often a case of buying the tooling and making it yourself.

Right on. I'll probably make a fitting or modify one. I miss PDX. It was a great city to live in... but those were VW days.

Interesting. I guess I'm lucky with where I live then. Every time I've needed something out of the ordinary, there is a little shop called "Industrial Specialties" in the next town over that seems to have or can get what I need. They have a TON of metric stuff.

I maybe a little late to the party, but when I put an aftermarket Oil Pressure guage on my brat, I needed an adapter as well. I used a part ment for Air tools. Just go to your local home improvement/tool shop and find the matching adapter.

Worked like a charm, and no leaks.

I pulled out my factory oil pressure sending unit and replaced it with this. http://www.sunpro.com/product_detail.php?pid=16339. It is available special order from Autozone for 8 or 9 dollars. They don't carry it on the shelf but if you give them the part number they can get it. I couldn't find a tee to allow me to keep my factory sender. I ended up mounting a mechanical o.p. gauge and volt. gauge in place of my dash clock. There is a pic of it here http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3226563. So far I haven't had any issues out of it.

That looks really nice. I will look into getting that. Thank you for the very helpful information/experience.

I have a triple gauge setup that is mounted in the radio DIN. Hopefully the other half will have more than a pocket, someday.

Thanks again.

I used a Ford temp sensor once to plug the oil sender unit hole after I broke it off :)

I then used the remaining stub, and drilled/tapped it to NPT to use an an adapter....
