2wd rear disks on a 4wd?

Featured Replies

Anyone ever done this successfully?

The backing plates are obviously different due to the diameter of the spindles, but the larger of the two (2wd) would seem to be a possible subsitute. Of course, this would depend on whether the bolts line up correctly, and the 2wd plate can be properly centered on the 4wd hub.

Any feedback on this is most welcome...

thanks, John

what's up alleyboy!

do you mean you're wanting to put 2WD rear disks on 4WD rear drum or 4WD rear discs? if the 4WD is already discs it's a straight swap.

and you mean EA82 to EA82?

Apples and oranges.

The 4wd has the bearings in the hub and the rotor has the splines in it.

The 2wd has the bearings in the rotor assembly.

And looking in the parts book, all the part numbers are different.

Meaning, I dont think the backing plate is going to fit on the 4wd hub.

I have 3 different numbers for the actual disc, but they look the same in the diagrams. I dont have dimensions in the parts book.

If I remember correctly, the only difference is the rear backing plate.

The disc and the calipers will work, but the rest will not. The hub, and the backing plate (which is also the caliper bracket) are totally different.

Hey, thanks for all the replies guys!!

To clarify, I'm doing a RD conversion on a 4wd wagon with drums. I've done 4wd to 4wd rear disk conversions, but never attempted to use rear disks systems from 2wd vehicles. I knew that the calipers, disks and pads were interchangeble, but wasn't sure about the backing plate.

Appreciate the info. Saved me alot of time and frustration

John

BTW I need a pair of 4wd backing plates if anyone has any

not sure what yours are like but check your existing backing plates and bolts - you might have a BEAR of a time if they're rusted at all like they get out this way. spray some PB Blaster on them multiple times over the course of a week or more and hope for the best. Definitely use a 6 point socket and if they're really bad you might have some sheared or rounded bolt heads to contend with.

Gary:

Yeah, I've had all of the above {and more} happen at various times. Lets just say I have a good working relationship with a lot of the machine shops around C-Bus:lol:

Even with the bolts off, backing plates seem to get hung up around the center hole alot, and it is easy to mangle them up if you pry too hard. I always clean and PB this area before getting started, and remove the plate in a circular motion.
