how to tell if i have a LSD

Featured Replies

I am a new guy here and really appreciate all the information and knowledge you all have. I have a auto tech background, but have not been practicing for a while now unless you count my own vehicles (mostly GM). I have a 98 OBW with the 2.5 5 speed. This is my first roo and have loved it so far. How can you tell you have a LSD. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks so much guys.

for most lsd diffs, you jack up both rear wheels and turn one wheel by hand. if both wheels turn the same direction it's limited slip. if they turn in different directions then it's an open diff.

this may not work on a viscous lsd. in those, the viscous fluid needs to heat up before it will limit slipping.

any one else know about a vlsd?

Thanks, I know that my diff does not have the lsd label on it, it is just that my rear end slides right out fron under me in the snow. Pretty cool though:burnout::burnout:

subaru, stupidly, stopped putting on the stickers around year 1995 and newer.

You don't. LSD's only come on performance models and not all of them. Outback's are not, so it wouldn't have come with one stock.

Are you sure? I could have sworn some of the Outback Limited models and maybe even those with "Cold Weather Package" had LSDs...

My mom has a 99 30th limited with the cold weather package, no lsd.

by the way crash321, yours is the best avatar i've seen in a long time.:banana::banana::banana::banana:

do you have to cook them??

Per Cars101.com:

The 2000 -? OB has LSD and the 2000-2002+? Forester (X) S had LSD...these were pre-turbo.

The only reason I viewed this thread was to see if someone was going to post something like that. It was my first thought - degenerate childhood. I notice you were completely ignored. Probably just as well.

that chart has inaccuracies.....

Didn't LS wagons come with it stock also?

I have a 5 spd 91 ls wagon & thought I had LSD rear.

I found it humourous, and appreciated the humor, just didn't feel it needed a comment (it was a small joke that could stand on its own).

Don't get sand in your mangina, was just trying to lighten the mood.

Sorry, but only the Sport Sedan (turbo) had the 3.90 VLSD in '91.....you should have a sticker on your rear diff (see my earlier post) w/info.

What? I am being misunderstood. I thought it was hilarious. That's what I meant by it was my first thought when I saw the title. I was confessing that my degenerate childhood prompted me to read it that way. Anyway, guess I should have included a :lol::lol::):):):banana::banana::clap::clap::headbang::headbang::brow:.
