December 14, 200817 yr I have a ea81 wit the coils installed on the rear, it was that way when i got it. i put a 4" lift on the rear and now i want to install rancho shocks. the rancho shocks have the eye bolts on the top but the coils are mounted with a post top. so how do i put the new shocks on with different tops ? do i need to order shocks with a post top and if so what shocks would they be or do i need to go to the junkyard and get a new top mount out of a ea81..... oh and its snowing in Portland !!!!! urban 4x4 !!!!
December 14, 200817 yr If your car has the EA82 coilovers on it it probably has a broken torsion bar, because that is usually the only reason people will do that to an EA81. If you take off the EA82 units and set the car down, look to see if sags lower than it should or leans to one side. If this is the case, and you still want to use your Ranchos, then you will either need to replace the bad torsion bars in your car, or get a new torsion tube assembly. Otherwise you will need custom mounts or longer coilovers to get your 4 inches of lift in the rear. -Bill
December 16, 200817 yr Hey there: The rancho shocks that fit the ea81 with 4" of lift are the RS5241. I had to widen the slots on the upper mount because they were not quite big enough for the upper mounting bolts, but otherwise they were a perfect fit with my 4/3 lift. Daniel
January 2, 200917 yr I am thinking about going to coilovers in the rear. Can somebody post a few pics of their setup? Thanks
January 5, 200917 yr except there are no pics in that usrm post........yet........several people have done this....i bet mcbrat(mick) has some photos floating around.cheers, brain
January 5, 200917 yr Here is a photo of the Rancho shocks on an EA81, same part number as previously mentioned. Edited March 27, 20179 yr by carfreak85
January 6, 200917 yr when I had a stock brat with a broken torsion bar, I did this.... http://www.indysworld.com/subaru/strutsinrear/ and when I broke the torsion bar in my lifted Red Brat, I used the 3" lift piece, and drilled holes in the ea82 strut mount plate. reversed it, and used washers to space it out so the springs wouldn't rub....
January 6, 200917 yr that white car is scary to have the jack holding it like that. wow. i would invest in some jackstands asap. i have seen cars tip a jack over like that, and it aint pretty.
January 6, 200917 yr I hear ya, and don't worry, this is an old picture and no subarus or people were hurt during the installation of those rear disc brakes.
