April 8, 200916 yr So, I've been working on purchasing an RX from my dad's neighbor. The year is unknown as of right now, but its only got 160k on it and it's the dual range, full-time 4wd:slobber:. My problem is that, according to the owner, the turbo is done. Seeing as how I don't know ANYTHING about working on/with turbo's:-\, I'm not entirely sure what to do. I called the local Subaru Stealership and a factory new replacement is $1300. So that option is out. So, what can I do? Can I just take off the turbo and use exhaust off of a non-turbo car? Or, as I think I've heard here on the board before, I can replace the EA82 turbo with one from a EJ series engine. What turbo do I need to find to do this and what all is involved with retrofitting the newer turbo or deleting the original from the system?

I see them all the time from 50-150 dollars. Heck I have 3 of them, I could sell you one.
April 8, 200916 yr Can I just take off the turbo and use exhaust off of a non-turbo car? That shouldn't even be an option. The car would have next to no power seeing as the turbo engines dropped compression to 7.7:1. Just find a used EA82 turbo, don't mod the engine and be happy with a reliable, vintage Subaru. I say don't mod it because these engines are notorious for sucking, and not holding up well to increased power/poor maintenance.
April 9, 200916 yr Q. What to do with an RX? A. More than likely headgaskets after you buy it. I've seen some people running the WRX TD04 turbo on their EA82's but your in for a lot of work if you want to go that route.

Get TD04 DP and 2.5in exhaust. Get WRX IC and get creative with plumbing. And thats pretty much it. You can leave it there, or dump more $ into it. I wouldnt do any of this on a EA82T engine that has over 125K tho.
April 9, 200916 yr Rob, I'm pretty sure you've worked/owned every Subaru model imported to this country several times over.

April 9, 200916 yr Rob, I'm pretty sure you've worked/owned every Subaru model imported to this country several times over. Never owned/touched a Gen 1 mechanically yet :-p Haha, how much? They're in working order I should hope? What all does it take to even replace a turbo eh? Lots of PB Blaster on the nuts. They like to freeze up from the heat. Getting the oil return line back on is a PITA, but the rest is straight forward.

April 9, 200916 yr What's the reason for the Oil Return line being a pain? Its in between the turbo and the head. If you dont make sure to get it slipped on while installing the turbo, it can be rather frustrating to get on. Probably why they only put a spring clip on it and its not under much pressure.

If all of this is too much for you...I'll take the hood and front clip from you. have sawzall will travel.zzz but seriously, replace the turbo and have fun, then while you are waiting for the engine to go out, build an EJ turbo motor. Plus our custom Fiberglass Hood that we are in the process of getting together, It will be nice a diffrent Kind of subaru.. That Sounds Expensive... I`ll Love to See Pictures of that, must be Very Nice! ...the local Subaru Stealership ... Ha, Ha! ... ... Funny! Well... I Believe that Swap a Bigger Turbo in a EA82T is like Kill the Engine, due to their Head Gaskets Issues... I Suggest to Change the Old one with a Good Workin` Used one from another EA82. if you Buy that Subie, Could you post Pics of it here? Kind Regards.
