which clutch should i buy?

Recommended Posts

lifetime warranty is cool - but are you sure the car will last that long?

I haven't been impressed with autozone for quality of parts. There's lots of places online that you can get two kits for that price. Also - if your going to do it, you might as well get a turbo clutch, or even an XT6 clutch. Better performance. The XT6 flywheel is lighter I understand. Not sure what the differences are in the Turbo flywheel.

I just did my clutch - with Qman's help. Things to remember that I learned from him on this subject:

1. Replace the rear main seal - it's right there, and cheap. Use a little silicone on the outside edge of it, and some grease or oil on the inside where it touches the crank.

2. Use locktite (we used blue) on the flywheel bolts - they are tapped right into the crank oil passage, and the locktite will seal againts oil leakage.

3. There is a mark on the flywheel (little round "O" shape) on one of the gear teeth, and there should be a mark on the pressure plate as well that is similar. These marks should be at least 90 degrees apart when installing the PP onto the flywheel.

4. Grease the contact points for the release bearing holder where it contacts the fork, and inside the hole where the groove is.

Clutchmasters can make you up to a FX300 using the clutch core. I had them do a segmented Kevlar for me and it has held up perfectly. They also have clutch kits for around 200 that are better than OEM and what you will get from Autozone.

Just go to http://www.clutchmasters.com for the regular kit or if you want to have them make up a higher performance one:

Just from what I have seen of your car, just get whatevers cheap and fits. Not being negative about it, But I don't see sinking a bunch of money into that thing.

Have you examined the clutch to determine that you need a while clutch kit? might just need a disc.. of course while you have it apart you should replace the TO bearing.

I got my clutch from Schucks/Kragen/Checker for about $160. It came with Disc, Pressure Plate, TO Bearing and alignment tool.

caleb, are you sure that was my car you saw. oh wait, yup of course. she's a good reliable honey and will climb just like the bigguns do. just not much clearance. i've never torn into a clutch before so when i get it dismantled i'm gonna post pics. i don't have the best camera, but i hope it will at least show some detail.

replacing just the worn parts if a very good idea, but that lifetime waranty is pulling me in. if i can get just the affected parts w/lifetime warranties, then i'll do that of course. i plan on buying another gl/gl10 after this one quits. i'll use the one i have now for parts. i can always use that clutch. they're not going to know that i have put it in a different vehicle. plus, i've heard stories on the board of clutches wearing out in as little time as 8-12 months. i drive it pretty hard so i better get something with a lifetime warranty.

Why would it do that? Other than complete rust-out, or massive body damage....

kind of silly to replace a car that you are going to put so much time into (ie: lift, tires, etc) cause of a little mechanical problem. I mean - that's cool if you want another one, but keep em both running - don't part it unless it's a complete loss. Just my opinion tho.

GD, after this one is "dead". i'll take my parts and put them on another wagon. i am definitely going to keep them both running. i just want a turbo wagon. it will be at least a year before i even contemplate buying a turbo wagon. i rather look into a turbo conversion though. that'd be cool. i was just saying that with a lifetime warranty, i can transfer that clutch to many more soobies that i WILL own in the course of my lifetime. i'll have the STi of course, but there will always be a wagon for play tucked away in my garage.

check out Clutchnet.com

We just installed one of their 6 puck Spring Hub Clutches in my friends 1990 Legacy Turbo. VERY grippy clutch, and doesn't slip a bit.

Best of all the disc was 125 USD!!!!!!!!!!!

They said they could make a custom Organic Kevlar Clutch for my justy for 80 bucks USD.

Give em a call. They make a great product, make it the day you call, and then ship it out to you.

heres a link for their Subaru Application chart.
