Questions about a 97 Subaru Outback Sport Impreza , needs transmission
Too bad that you missed out on it, but there's a chart in the USRM on transmission types for the EJ cars. Many different gearsets and final drive ratios, but if you have the correct matching front and rear diff ratios, most of the gearboxes interchange. I wound up putting a '95 Legacy sedan gearbox and diff into my '97 Impreza L wagon. Works just fine.

Volunteers needed for Mt. Hood Rally
This is a great event to work and watch. A short ride from Portland and a bit longer from the Seattle area. But it's worth it. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1357686

October 7th at Hillsboro. Who's gonna play? (last ORG RallyX of the season)
Bring the mud tires; they've had 2 inches of rain in the last week; 70% chance of rain on Saturday and 40% chance of rain on Sunday.

rear diff question
Definitely pick up the LSD. Spline counts on all the rear diffs are the same. EJ rear diffs don't have stub axles like the EA81 and EA82. I couldn't tell you about the finned plate; either way I wouldn't consider changing it.

CV Axles?
That's why I couldn't find it. Thanks for re-posting. And yes, it belongs in the USRM.

Vibration after GCK axles install
Stiff out of the box is normal; vibration on acceleration is not; if it vibrates on acceleration, it's broken, tell them you want a new one and will turn in the old one when it's replaced.

October 7th at Hillsboro. Who's gonna play? (last ORG RallyX of the season)
Well actually I'm trying to decide how soggy the field will be based on recent rains. Last month it was so dry they couldn't run the water truck on it enough and street tires were actually better than mud tires. I'm just trying to decide whether I should go through the trouble of bringing my gravel tires along with the mudders.

CV boot hell
edrach replied to 1995SubaruImpreza's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX+1 on MWE. With 220K on your car it would not surprise me if they would all fail around the same time. But I agree it's certainly suspicious. Also, the passenger side does fail more often since it is right over the catalytic converter which generates quite a lot of heat and causes the boot above to fail more often than the rest.

CV Axles?
three different style depending on turbo, automatic, fwd or awd. Do a search, I know it's been posted a number of times.

Vibration after GCK axles install
That's the outer joint's (CVJ) job. DOJ just adjusts for changes in the length of the axle as the suspension moves up and down since it doesn't have to drastically change angles in a turn.

October 7th at Hillsboro. Who's gonna play? (last ORG RallyX of the season)
I was trying to get daily precipitation info for Hillsboro Airport to decide which tires to bring to the rallycross. Unfortunately, these people want to be paid and the info is only complete to 10/2. https://weather-warehouse.com/index.html So, anyone local to Hillsboro who can volunteer how much rain you've had in the past week? Thanks.

Drop me a PM with Sean's address and I'll try to make it (no promises).

Vibration after GCK axles install
Vibration on acceleration that goes away instantly on letting off the gas is a definite symptom of a bad DOJ. I've seen the vibration so slight a mechanic not used to my car didn't notice it; also so bad it felt like the transmission was falling out of its mounts. I'm with the bad DOJ side on this, even if they are new. I'd take them back and replace them.

14" Wheels on 99 Legacy GT?
edrach replied to RedRum's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'm not sure of that; I know there are some issues with the WRX models and 15" wheels. I would just try mounting one of the 14" steel wheels you have on the front and see if it clears the caliper. If it does you should be okay since the offsets are close enough. Otherwise look for some 15" wheels/tires on craigslist or the local wrecking yard.
