VW Scirocco/soob engine???
coylethebarbarian replied to coylethebarbarian's topic in Subaru Transplants
I understand...I just hated to see the VW go to total rust and did not know what else to do besides use a subaru engine....I am a little more familiar with them and have access to a few. I have left the guy a message this weekend, & I am hoping he will get back with me soon about the rocco. If I am able to snag it, I'll put it in a barn at least to keep it out of the weather & oil the underside like crazy to keep it from rusting more... If I do not decide to tackle the VW engine, I'll at least offer to pass it on to a VW enthusiast -

VW Scirocco/soob engine???
coylethebarbarian replied to coylethebarbarian's topic in Subaru Transplants
Oh, I had not originally considered "butchering" it at all...that is why I posted this to get info on adding a soob engine...I can not speak from experience, but I have heard it is cheaper to use subaru engines in VW than to try and get hold of a good VW engine....maybe not.... I will admit, the car is clean inside...no, I mean NO tears or rips in the seats....and I'll further admit I did have visions of it being a 4wd....thought that would be very cool...but I was afraid of the "butchering" as you call it... Glad bushbasher told me about the firewall...I'll have to weigh out the pros & cons...it's tempting, but I am no where close to the saw-zaw...yet...it's an option... Anyone else with ideas or insight??? I'll keep you posted... -

So I have had my eye on this VW Scirocco that is just sitting by this guy's garage, round headlights, looks to be the '74-79? model....I looked in the interior and was surprised to see it in great shape-few cracks in dash, but seats, headliner, etc all in very good shape, with food glass....I haven't approached the guy yet or looked at the engine compartment...But I am curious.... Someone tell me, would the conversion to a 4x4 soob engine be possible??? Or better yet, tell me where to go to look up the parts needed, and where to research this conversion! Any ideas/thoughts are appreciated...

I was able to get my '82 Brat yesterday. Man, is it nice! Sure a few things to fix but in all the brat is in good shape. I will post some pics in the next few days of what it looks like. I think this will be my daily driver once the clutch is fixed. I'll keep the wagon as a project and loan it out to my Parents as needed-they need a "beater" too...and the 2nd Brat I am picking up just before christmas...it will be my project "wilderness vehicle".... -
Welcome, there are many people on here that I am sure can help you...I am new as well or I'd give it a shot....but my technical ability is limited as of now...

What do your friends think of your hobby!?
coylethebarbarian replied to Shadyirishmen's topic in Off Road
I have the same problem here in this armpit of a town...I could not find any Subaru owners....at least not the 70's. 80's or 90's ....there are a few retired couples who drive the new outbacks...even finding a subaru to buy here was difficult. The only guy I know who thinks they are great is an Aussie I work with-he and his wife both drive soobs. I can not wait to get my '89 wagon running and go where all the SUV's and HUGE lifted chevys and fords can not go! -
Well, I can not believe it...another Subaru person in my general area! Glad you made it here! I wish there were more Subie owners in my state and the others around me! Keep me posted if you find any killer deals on Subaru parts or vehicles in our area and I'll do the same!

coylethebarbarian replied to coylethebarbarian's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I was just glad to find a subaru in this area! They seem to be in short supply...or coveted by those who have them and thus never bring them out of storage and into the light of day....oh yeah, I expect to pump a bit more money into this one...so the original $75 will skyrocket.... -
Well, I did it...I purchased my 1st Subaru today...! It's a 1989 GL Wagon with 117,000 miles on it. The body, pretty rusted around the wheel wells, and doors are feeling the pain too...will need new front tire, and the front driver's side panel is dented...the engine is not working, fuel pump was out but it did start up with the old owner putting fuel in the injector-or so he said-but he found antifreeze in the oil, started draining the engine but left it to sit for almost 1 1/2 years...going to tackle that first thing, the belts are all shot(not a big deal)...interior is very nice, no rips in seats, dash in great shape, head liner, etc...I plan on just doing a complete overhaul if it seems worth it... That is the quick and dirty about it, point is I snagged it for $75 with a good title, maybe too much for it, but I wanted a "beater" and a soob to tear the engine down and begin experimentation with, etc...looks like I found it! I'll post pics of it ASAP and any progress I make as well. I go next week to pick up my '82 Brat as well!! Yeah! Yet another reason I want this wagon to mess with, before I tear into the Brat! Shane
