  1. I guess I will eliminate the metal faced one then. The "NOS" one and the other , non Felpro are very similar. Todd
  2. The gaskets will only fit one way. The holes are just a bit too small to fit over the 2 dowels on each side. The NOS Subaru seems the like the flimsy one. I kinda like the one with the steel back, but then again, it may leak sooner. Fel-pro is really heavy and thick. Also, it appears that the 2 of the coolant passage holes have been covered up with the Subaru gasket and 2 of the aftermarket. It is the passage closest to the front and rear of the engine. Was this a change? Todd
  3. Ok....which of these 4 head gaskets are the best. NOS subaru Felpro. (Seems the heaviest and most solid) Aftermarket, with one side covered in steel. Aftermarket, kinda like NOS. Also, the bolts in the block have an 2 "Alignment dowels" surrounding 2 bolts, the gaskets don't fit over the dowels. Are the dowels needed? Can I just enlarge the bolthole in the gasket, so it fits over the dowel? The dowels or sleeves are about 1/2 inch long and can be removed easily. Thanks!!!!!!!! Todd PICS of the gaskets http://m2.aol.com/vintagesubaru
  4. Can you just replace the pump shaft? I would think the TC would be OK. Todd
  5. Thanks Q-man.....I feel honored! (Moosens is right up there too though!)
  6. Baja...could you elaborate on this? Will this work in 70s cars too? Todd
  7. Kinda high in my opinion. (Actually, very high retail.) You are not getting a deal. Personally, I would rather pull the parts. That way I have the hardware and can continually reevaluate my decision in the process. This car is nearly 20 years old and not of collector interest yet. Consider the yard paid between $50 and $250 for the entire car. Regards, Todd
  8. Unmolested and orignal condition, also drive the prices way up. This is the direction for BRATs. I just saw one sell at an auction in PA for $4800 and it was in worse condition, but original/stock and low mileage. Todd
  9. Ok...I give. PM me the place! Todd
  10. No movement in the loose lifter. They are solid too. I guess it's just a variation, or update to the solid lifter design. Todd
  11. $500 for any Subaru? As an Subaru enthuiast, I'd like to feel that all my effort and money that I put into maintaining my cars, will bring more than $500 at sale time! I think we do an injustice to our brand, always trying to cheapen it! I know there are good deals to be found out there, but typically, you get what you pay for. A project car, a rust bucket is worth less than a restoration, or clean original. My Gen 1s have thousands more invested than they are worth, but $500 is a far shy from what I would consider selling for. Todd
  12. The new engine has all the same type of lifters in place. It's just they appear different than the ones I'm accustomed to. I just placed one of the older type in the hole, so I could take the picture for comparison. I don't plan on mixing lifters. My concern was that the push rods don't fit as deep in the lifters in the engine. They fit deeper into the earlier ones I have used before. I'm not going to split the case. I'm just curious as to the difference in the 2 types of lifters. Todd
  13. What year??? Todd
  14. What's the difference between these lifters? The older style I placed in the hole to the right for comparison to the installed lifters in the engine. EA-71/Fatcase It appears the ones in the engine are not as deep as the one's I'm used to. The push rod fits, it just doesn't sit down as far. Is this just an update? Do you think all is OK to use the regular pushrods and valve train? Am I concerned for nothing?? Thanks! Todd
  15. OK, it appears that the lifters were changed somewhat over the years. The lifters in this new engine are shallower and the push rod does not sit in it as deep. If I compare this to the "older" lifter, the older one is deeper and wider , where the push rod sits. I do know they are solid lifters. I'll try to get some pics. Todd
  16. I have determined that these are solid lifters. Todd
  17. So the old heads, 78,79 can go on a later, 81-84 EA71 block? (Absent the EGR, air suction modification that will need to be done.) Todd
  18. Great information! Thanks! It's just the block. It's a fat case, so it's a later version. Todd
  19. I just got a "NOS" new EA71 shortblock. I'm unsure of the cam followers/lifters. They look different. It appears that the "pushrod cup" in the top of the cam follower, is smaller than some of my other EA71s. The tip of the pushrod does not sit as deep. Is this just an update? Can I still use the standard pushrods? I have no experience with EA71 hydraulic valves. Looking at the engine shortblock, what would indicate these may be hydraulic lifters? I want to go with the standard valve train/pushrods. Todd Thanks!! Todd
  20. Did EA71's even come with hydralic lifters? Todd
  21. Quick question: Will all EA-71 cylinder heads, (regardless of year), interchange with all EA-71 blocks, (regardless of year)? Are the pushrods the same? Disregard the emission stuff, EGR , air suction ect, I can make that all work. But am I missing something? Can a 1984 EA71 take the cylinder head from a 79 1600? They physically look the same. Todd
  22. That silver molding with rubber insert was also added "stateside". It came in long lengths with end pieces/bullets. It just depended on the day of the week and who was installing it, as to what level it was at at how far it extended. Todd
  23. AC on all Gen 1's (Cars and BRATs), was added in the US. NONE came from the factory with it. Essentially, the most common GL's, from LATE 79 forward, had cloth seat, black body side molding, 4 headlights, tach, clock, lighted ashtray and cig lighter, AM FM radio. All 79 and up had the wood dash. 1978 was the only year with silver dash. The 78 and 79 GF was the "top of the line" ALL had tachs. Some early BRAT GL's came with vinyl seats 78 was a weird year. No formal 'GL". No telling what you may find though. I have seen very late 78s with wood dashes. Wheels can be changed out. They do not indicate the GL/DL status. Options were. 8 track, AC, sliding rear window, wood steering wheel/shifter knob, armrest, lower engine protector, leather wrap steering wheel, winch, various different bumpers/rollbars, caps, wheels, floor mats, locking fuel cap door, fog lights, bumper guards and various other options fro the cars and wagons, (racks).
