  1. that sound about right from the dealer? its acctually $1576 and some change +tax for the new shortblock...
  2. alright, well if anyone is keeping track.. got the engine out, scrapdaddy and I tore it down, headgaskets looked ok although a couple spots between the cylinder and the water jacked were questionable.. also #4 piston was cleaner than the rest, so we figure classic blown headgasket.. well while scrapdaddy was cleanin up i was pokin around lookin at the block.. in #2 there is a hairline 1 inch long (what looks to be a crack) from the head mounting surface down the cylinder wall.. so its going to the machine shop tomorrow to verify its cracked.. if it is i might just get rid of the friggin car, i dunno yet.. depends on if i can find a used engine around thats in my price range.. I know i can't afford to drop a CCR motor in and would prolly take me 8 months to save up enough money to get one.. and teh car can't sit there that long without a motor, landlord would have a friggin cow.. hell he already is i imagine.. anyone got a 2.5 Dohc engine layin around? would prefer it to be already torn down or such.. hell i could prolly get by with a new shortblock if anyones got one of them.. i'm bettin my heads are OK..
  3. just pulled the engine in my 99' OB engine came out with the torque converter on it still bolted up. just gotta wiggle it a bit and make shure you don't have any angle on the transmission shaft and it will come off..
  4. its a blown head gasket, same thing mine was doing, ya might as well either rip the engine out and replace both headgaskets and relevant seals or take it in and have it done under your extended warranty..
  5. alright, no biggy.. i got my parts list from Hollis at Browns faxed over this morning. for every gasket on that motor basically is gonan run me about $450, that includes the water pump, exhaust gaskets, and the oil pump seals.. also heater hoses, coolant hoses, etc.. but i wanna make sure the heads are good before i go ordering all this stuff.. most of it was in stock except for the raidator and heater hoses, and knocksensor..
  6. i got the blinking indicator light... next to the fog light switch.. if ya hold the lock/panic button it goes off, at least the horn does anyways..
  7. mine doesn't do anything but lock the doors, lol no lights, no horn nothing.. i wish it would flash, honk something, guess i need to dig through my owners manual.. mines a 99'
  8. since a few of ya wanted pics, here they are.. the engine is out of it, thats why its sittin high in the front.. and the dent in the bumper is the only dent in it.. it cleaned up OK gonna do some steam cleaning soon though to the carpets.. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=649&ppuser=&page=1
  9. changed the t-stat, filled with af, used a burper to burp it, lol.. i noticed a constant stream of bubbles with teh engine at 2k or so, so i ripped the engine outa it today.. took it over to scrapdaddy's place, he's gonna tear it down and reseal the hole thing for me.. (i work 11 hour days so i don't really have time to do it anyways) i'm crossing my fingers that it doesn't have a cracked head or anything and its just an HG gone south.. soon as we find out about the heads, if they're both good i'm gonna order parts from subaru and get her back on the road.. I know i need to get pics of it, maybe tomorrow if I remember..
  10. 131k.. only 1 ding in teh back bumper.. not bad at all.. nice on teh inside, etc.. drives great, has a li8ttle shudder in 1st and second.. it drove half ways home (10 miles) fine, good heat, good temp.. but i heard the air bubble in the heater core.. so i stopped for gas, and when i left the heater was cold even though the temp gauge was on normal.. with a little rev up to 1500 it got warm.. so that told me its got a wicked air bubble in the cooling system.. anyways on down the road a few more miles i notice the temp guage shot up to about 3/4 in about 1 second.. then it dropped down to normal, then back up, then down, then all the way and it pegged.. so i kill it, and coast off in a driveway, pop the hood, and the radiator is cold. i pop the cap and she's warm but not super hot and it spewed a little bit (normal spew of a normal temp engine) anyways i sit there and let it cool off then drive it the last mile home, ended up coasting into my driveway to keep it from gettin hot again.. pop the hood, same thing with the radiator and the heat was cold too.. but its still full of antifreeze.. top radiator hose was warm but not extremely hot, couldn't feel the bottom.. bettin its gonna need a HG but am wondering if the freakin t-stat is stickin + its got the air bubble.. gonna change it tomorrow and try to get the air bubble out of it.. once thats done, if she does it again its gonna sit until i can afford to either replace it (it was pretty gutless, felt worn out) or tear the heads off and hope thier not cracked.. its deffinitely worth fixin.. too nice of a car...
  11. she came in with the title today.. i took care of her bill (beings i'm the service manager) and she walked away with $645.. i got title and keys.. gonna drive her home tonight and clean her up (its dirty) finally found a newer gen car i could afford, lol.. htinkin about it its the newest car i've ever owned.. ohh the lady bought it used in december if 99' with 2020 miles on it.. i'm really excited...
  12. lol, naw not just yet.. i think the wifey's camry is going to loose a tranny here soon.. gonna drive it until it won't drive no more but the outback will make her a nice replacement.. even if i gotta put a new head/gasket on it down the road..
  13. lol, umm no we don't do that... she had it towed in thinking its got a HG problem or bad engine.. its already been to another hill billy shop that wired the electric fans so they come on with the key.. we look it over, let it run awhile, drive it, compression test it, etc.. basic stuff you do when you "think" you have a bad headgasket. it shows no sign of any problems at all except its got 136k on teh original plugs and wires and is missing horribly.. I called her, told her we do not think she has a hg/engine problem and this is why, then proceed to sell her a tune-up. she says ok do it. but in talkin with her i get the feeling she still thinks she has this "major" engine problem that we can't find.. before i hang up she asks me to price a new engine for her car, installed. by this point i know she is dead set on it bein bad. so i price it all up as i would with any other customer.. i call her back, quote her the price and she says no, i think i'll just get rid of it.. then i ask her what she's gonna do with it, she says "if i can get a decent price i'll sell it" i ask whats a decent price? she says $500-1000.. i say ok i'll give ya that and pay your $350 bill here at the shop.. thats where the conversation left off.. so no i'm not telling her she has a bad engine, i told her she doesn't need one, she's the one who's set on it being bad.... we are an honest shop... not like some out there.. and i sorta feel good about this since our factory trained subaru guy thinks its ok also.. bout the only thing i'm guilty of is gettin it for a deal.. i mean would you go buy a used car thats priced at $5995 and say well i feel like payin you $8995 for the car just to take it off your hands? lol......no
  14. yeah its a 99 with the tiny hoodscoop even if the lady comes in and says she wants a little more i may just offer her $1500 for it and take my chances on the engine being toasted.. we'll see.. i know i can't let it get away, lol...
  15. got one in the shop yesterday, lady said its got a blown hg or engine... was towed in.. my shop foreman went over it.. let her run for an hour or so and drove it.. no overheating problems.. it did have a miss so we fixed that with a good ole tune-up.. are these the phase 1 engines? or phase 2? and is it worth it for me to give the lady about 700 for it? cars in good shape inside and out, just a little dirty.. has alloys, no sunroof, is automatic with 136k on the ticker.. if i do buy it and it turns out to be a dud with a blown hg/head i'll need to either get rid of it or part it out..
  16. alright, well no vf22 for my soob then but the TMIC is still goin on
  17. will i need to change flanges, etc to get this vf22 and tmic on my ea82T? what else will i need to get / do?
  18. yeah, timing is right.. either way its gettin water in the oil now so timing doesn't really matter anymore.. gonna be ripping the engine out, putting another running engine in itthat we have layin around.. WJM got your PM one back at ya
  19. yeha, fuel pump is good, filter is good, spark is good, disty is good, finally got it goin, has a blown HG so runs on 3 cyl. dunno how the compression was good tho.. backfires, etc.. gotta rip her guts out and fix it.. found lots of rust in the back cargo compartments and a couple small holes in the frame rails... got her up to about 45mph, trans shifts pretty good.. worth fixing i suppose.. that or gut her out for parts.
  20. picked up my free wagon yesterday, little rusty aroudn the rears and frame rails, not bad though. hood and drivers front fender have been swapped at some point you can tell by the red and white underneath the black. (she hit a deer) at any rate its a 88' gl-10 full-time 4wd turbo wagon (automatic bleh) factory black with grey interior and rear disc brakes. didn't look for the lsd.. the lady told me it broke a t-belt and her husband put another one on and it never did run again. and they had a problem with the turbo?? so i get it home, tear it down, of course he didn't rotate the engine 180 when puttin the pass. side belt on. so i fixed that, pulled the plugs, blew AF out of #1. so next i checked the compression, 120psi on all 4 dead on. no coolant in the oil either, so i stick new plugs, starter, etc in it. he also had the #2 and 4 plug wires wrong on the cap. fixed that. now for the problem. It will sit there and crank exactly as it should, (sounds normal too) but not even hit at all. i verified spark and fuel as well. sprayed enough starting fluid in it to blow the heads off. got nothing. so for the heck of it i put the plug wires on 1 2 3 4 in that fireing order, nothing, still cranked and sounded like a normal cranking engine should. Disty is turning as well as the torque converter and cams, so nothing is broke internaly. (no knocking either) everything is hooked up and working as far as i can tell. i have no clue what to look for next. any ideas? thought about pullin the turbo and tryin it again in hopes the turbo is frze up not lettin it start, but not sure that would do it though.. HELP!! please....
  21. If my loan falls through tomorrow i might wanna come take a look at your wagon... i had one once that had rusty frame rails.. they don't pass inspection too well.. since they are rusty it might only be worth $50-$100 to me.. shoot me a message, lets talk about it.
  22. or you could take it to the local jiffy lube where the retard there puts the same filter on your trans as he did on your engine.. we fixed one of those in my shop last week.. arrg..
  23. just come down to my shop, my tire guy toques them by hand with a torque wrench.. only shop in town that does
  24. take the top of the air cleaner off, start the car, verify that the choke is working.. if its not, its not gonna run... ya might even prop it open somehow and go drive it after the engine is normal temperature.. if that choke sticks shut especially when driving its not going to run well at all..
