how does exhaust get inside car? blowby?
Meeky Moose replied to teasdam's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
check the compartment in the very back where the jack goes for a rust hole... this will do it too... if theres a hole that is.. -
beings i'm the service manager here at the shop i have to order parts, etc.. i've run into this soooo many times. lol.. parts guys get the legacy (outback) and the regular outback mixed up.. have them pull out rotors and pads for both the outback and the legacy, you will find what your searching for..went through this on an 00 today and a 97 last week, and a 96 the week before.. ohh and it doesn't matter what parts store it comes from, napa, advance, autozone, etc.. they all do it..

well i need some help.. the car is an old postal wagon, right hand drive, 2.2, automatic, awd. 186k. it only does this intermittently and is drivin me nuts. You'll be driving along, then it starts missing bad, check engine light comes on, won't go above 45mph with your foot in it. then all of a sudden it clears up and is fine for awhile. the cars had a new coil pack, wires, plugs, pcv, fuel filter, etc put on it. the check engine code is either random misfire or cyl #3 misfire. can't seem to figure out whts causing this. any ideas?

well, fastest i've had an ea81 (engine and car) was in my old 89' hatch.. wrapped that speedo back around to the M where it says mph.. this was midday dead wind keeping up with DC/Baltimore traffic, lol..

glad she ran good for ya.. knew she would... just glad to see that it went to a good home, lol..

Fair price on 92 Loyale?
Meeky Moose replied to viceversa's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Personally its worth what you think its worth, but the market won't give that too you if theres others around that are more appealing price and condition wise.. like my RX 193k on the body, 140k on the motor, new everything, 4wd and turbo, almost perfect checkered interior and i can't get $1k for it.. so i think you might have a problem gettin $750 for yours due to it being 2wd and automatic.. just my opinion.. -
Rx Turbo Header pipe EA82T
Meeky Moose replied to camosuba's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yup, mine did that... totally separated from the rest of the pipe.. only option.. put another one on .. no real aftermarket for these cars, unless you fab up something yourself.. -
hey Scott, let me know if you want me to come up, i can get those action shots for ya.. maybe go get my RX stuck lol.. gonna rip the ac condenser out of it this weekend as i think thats my overheating issue.. either way i'm up for some 4xing.. besides i've never had this rx in 4wd except when it snowed.. if your off this weekend/monday it'd be a good time for me.. gotta put the skid plate back on the RX after i change the oil too.. post back here or give me a ring.. 434-466-8811

personally i say pull the engine.. its pretty straight forward and you don't have to have a jack holding the trans up.. i can get an ea81 out of a soob in 2 hours.. without a engine hoist.. 2 people can lift it out.. complete it might wiegh 200lbs at the most, lol.. sounds like you have a good handle on mechanics.. and if you take your time and remember where everything goes, i'm sure the job will go easy for you.. good idea on the crank seals, bad idea on the head bolts.. ya might do the oil pump and water pump while its out too, its a bit easier.. good luck..

gas mileage challange
Meeky Moose replied to schreckman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey steve.. i've always gotten good mileage out of my cars.. except for the slushbox wagon.. the NX i just got (i'm assuming) had the notorious 5th gear popout problem.. so someone stuck a 4-speed in it.. the 4th gear is acctually taller than the 5th gear in the 5-speed.. hence the better mileage.. now the rx on the otherhand, not sure how it gets 28 mpg.. sometimes more, sometimes less.. never acctually taken it on a trip either, so that mileage is all in town/country driving.. i'm sure it'd do better on a trip.. the little hatch, well, its name was Junky, cause it came from a junkyard, they said it had a bad fuel pump, i said no way.. drove her 6k miles in 2.5 months, then sold her to a friend.. never saw that bad fuel pump.. ran like a top.. best hitachi carb i've ever seen.. and for 204k, well lets just say, i got my $60 worth, lol... -
gas mileage challange
Meeky Moose replied to schreckman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
86' ea82T 2wd 5-speed wagon = 34mpg (290k original miles) 89' ea81 4wd hatch = 32mpg (204k original miles and a hitachi carb) 85' rx sedan = 28mpg (modified, with an engine thats has 145k) 88' gl 4wd auto wagon = 16 mpg (bad trans is the cause) now for a non soob 91' Nissan NX = 37mpg (got it for that reason and it was close to free) -
i know hill holders were used on subarus even in the early 80's, so its been a feature on thier manual trans cars for decades.. when properly adjusted it should release just as the clutch starts to grab.. they can be adjusted to any "feel you think it should have.. they can also be disconnected since they are cable driven.. sounds to me like yours was just out of adjustment.. only takes a few minutes to adjust it right.. take it to the dealer and tell them the hill holder is not releasing soon enough causing the car to stall.. they'll know what your talkin about..

I know it sounds logical that by putting her in the suburban that she might not be as careful thus injuring someone else.. tell ya what, my wife totalled our van, if her and my baby woulda been in anything smaller they both would have been dead, period. i am thankful she was in that big van.. after that she was alot more cautious driving and paying attention to what she was doing. then i let her drive my acura, she put it in a ditch and totalled it too.. she acctually got hurt in this one. point being, sure a big vehicle can hurt others if you plow into a justy. but if she pulls into traffic again and a big 4x4 plows into her, she will more than likely be around because the suburban is so big.. i know i would rather have my wife drivin something big than small anyday, just for the matter, that if they did get in a wreck i know they'd be comin home..

well the turbo took a dookie the other day. so i pulled it off to find out the crossover pipe had totally come apart right at the flange that bolts to the turbo. so anyways, i pulled the crossover pipe off the old engine, stuck another turbo on the car and she fired right up.. its got a tiny exhaust leak where the stud stripped in the head, but otherwise running good.. i went to shut it off, i turn the key off and pull it out and the car will run for 5-10 seconds then sputters off.. any ideas? I've been over the hoses, wires, etc a few times now and everything is hooked up.. besides i didn't touch anything but the turbo and crossover pipe, lol.. least its driveable now...

glad, shes alright.. minor wounds give her something to think about next time she turns without looking.. definitely make her drive the suburban. if my wife would have been in a soob, or any small car for that matter, instead of our gmc conversion van, her and my daughter would have been dead.. she basically turned left without looking, running a red light, and got nailed by a nissan 200sx doing 65mph.. the van was totalled, but her and my baby girl came through it without a scratch.. sometimes i think maybe "the man" upstairs made us go through all those problems with that van, so my family could still be alive today.. who knows huh.. too b ad about the justy, but its just a car and can be replaced..

gettin real tired of messin with this stupid car.. put a new engine in it about 3k ago, and it took a dump tonight.. engine is ok, but the turbo is what took a ****.. and out of the 3 spares we have layin around, 1 is shot completely, the other 2 have cracked exhaust housings.. i'm not spendin 3 hours ****in with the turbo just to have a friggin exhaust leak.. on top of all this i'm loosin my job prolly next week.. so nows the time when i really need something i can drive to get a new job.. anyone care to give me $750 for it so i can go get another car? or got something friggin reliable for trade? at this point i don't even care if its a soob. contemplating clearing all the soobs in my driveway and gettin away from them.. seems like every damn day i have to work on it.. its worse than the old FORD in the driveway...

Meeky Moose replied to SubaRube's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah those are pretty nice, seen them before.. the ones i got from germany cost me $50 for the wheels and $170 shipping... still cheaper than say aftermarket wheels for any other car out there.. -
New Chassis From Junkyard
Meeky Moose replied to the_bard's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey noel, want my wagon? rust free except for a tiny spot on the tailgate... throwin in my h-alloy wheels and tires off the RX.. spfi, 4wd, bad auto trans.. engine runs great (has stuck oil plug) also needs front brakes, but i have 2 brand new rotors i'm also throwin in.. interior is mint, the body is dent free, and the paint is still glossy. ice cold a/c and everything works. power windows, etc.. i have a 5-speed pushbutton 4wd trans here as well along with the hole driveline. and 4 like new coil over struts.. nice clean title and only 140 some thousand on the ticker..
