picked up an 86 gl wagon a little while back.. ea82 carbed motor of course.. my question is just how gutless should this thing be? i mean i know its gonna be but 0-60 time is about 1 minute.. even to keep up with traffic from a light in normal in town driving you gotta have your foot on the floor and run it balls to the wall just to keep up.. this morning a school bus out accelerated me.. i'm talkin one of the big flat nose busses.. i've had ea81 carbed vehicles before and none of them were this gutless.. this is the first ea82 carbed car i have had, thats why i'm asking.. i know she's runnin on all 4, i know the secondaries work (you can hear them) the car runs as smooth as can be, gets about 25 mpg, etc.. any input on this?

bought it with 134k, sits in the driveway with a cracked block with 15 miles more than that.. otherwise is a nice car, lol.. only drove it once, from the shop to home.. then i yanked the motor.. bought it with a bad engine i knew that but for $1k i couldn't pass it up, even if it takes me 6 months to get another engine for it..

to address these issues, here are my answers.. 1. detail the car thouroghly, i mean shampoo the carpets, seats, etc.. 2. check the motor mounts/transmission mounts for wear, also you do need to push on the gas to get these things to move in reverse, most of the time.. 3. they are AWD vehicles, meaning they stay in AWD all of the time unless the FWD fuse is put in, then its not recommended to drive it in FWD mode all the time.. AWD in any vehicle is gonna be AWD all the time.. if the alignment is done to factory spec, they outbacks will pull to the right most of the time.. mine does it.. now some other folks here have successfully made some adjustements to compensate.. i don't know how to do it though.. maybe someone else will chime in. 4. if your smelling gas, you prolly have a gas leak under the hood, or a possible temp sensor flooding the engine. the latter would also make it run poorly most likely.. I'd check for leaks first.. otherwise, glad you like your Subaru i know i love the fleet i have..

heh, glad i got my 90' camry.. 2.2 automatic.. gets 34+ in mixed town and highway (65 and uder) driving.. i usually see 360-380 miles per 11 gallons of gas :-p and its got 204k on it with the original trans and motor.. my svx has been averaging about 23 mpg since i got it.. dunno about the old wagon its prolly around 23 or so as well.. now my 94 yota pickup gets 24 back and forth to work.. and its 4wd with 235k on its ticker. as far as the forester handling like a rally car.. i bet it does compared to a citroen, ROFL...

my lifted subaru always makes me late...

having owned a lifted hatch i know how that is.. although people do the same thing when i drive my SVX.. -
from what i can tell by reading my owners manual (yes its still in the car) i think the cupholder was a seperate piece (not attached to the car) that you set in the center console when you wanted to use it.. mines missing too, lol.. well its black, tan leather interior, 185k original tranny.. still shift ok, is a little sluggish in the 2-3 shift though.. everything is there, everything works.. doesn't leak or burn anything. will get pics tomorrow.. BTW Emily, i spent the OBW wagon engine money on this car, lol.. once i get a couple things sold i'll email you about that engine

ok, EFI's are NOT good in water. seized motor

but with 235k on the ticker, a wrist pin slapping (has been for over 100k) and another motor with 30k on it sitting in a 4runner for parts, what does it matter? lol.. -
anyone have pics of BLACK subarus?
Meeky Moose replied to erik litchy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
don't have any pics, but i had a black ea82 turbo wagon at one point.. black looks good on the wagons.. now if you have tan interior it might not look too good.. my old RX was like charcoal grey.. looked good as well.. i say have it painted black.. and make sure they paint the door jambs and such too.. nothing worse then opening the door and see blue, white, red door jambs.. -
its FUJIBOND!! lol j/k no idea really..

heh i did that in my yota, 2 foot deep mud hole, (mostly water) i hit it 2nd gear 4 low, sucked water up the intake, hydrolocked the motor.. we drug it out, i let her sit for about 20 minutes, rolled her down the hill a bit dumping the clutch in small bursts.. then she finally cranked, blew all teh water out the tail pipe.. still running the same engine, never even had to change the plugs.. just the air filter.. runs good still -
heh you need to drive a celica all trac like mine.. everyone forgets that the celica alltrac was the world rallycar champion in 88 and 89' ... beings it handles like an STI wieghs right at about 3000lbs with me in it, 5-speed, awd, turbo, etc, etc.. i would say its more fun to drive than even an 88' XT6.. i know i can launch it off the line faster than a wrx and not have to worry about blowin my trans out.. (did it this weekend the guy gave me a with the bird attached to it, lol..) the celica alltrac was made up into the late 90's as well, you just have to hunt for them.. its like finding a needle in a hay stack...

personally i would go to another dealer... sounds like you got an HG pushing compression into the cooling system which thus pushes coolant out of the overflow tank.. this may only happen when at cruising rpm's 3000 or so.. do a test at home.. get someone to hold the rpm's at about 3000 or so and you wahtch the overflow tank and see if it starts to fill up or leak.. if thats the case thats your smell.. it may not do it if its just sitting there idleing.. if its a tiny HG issue it may take it a good 10-15 min at those rpm's to do it as well..

heh, noone mentioned this.. Toyota has been making (Alltrac) vans, celicas, cars, and wagons, since the late 80's... sure, you don't see them alot but they have.. i have an 88' celica turbo Alltrac... AWD, 5-speed, turbo and its more comfortable, and faster stock than any stock 88' soob.. as far as reliability, well it is a toyota... now boosted to 14PSI my celica will spank a stock WRX.. lol that puts it at about 240ish HP at the crank... not knocking subaru's but i have to agree that they hit a bump in the road with the 2.5 engine...

the gl-10 rx wagon goes CRUNCH
Meeky Moose replied to scrapdaddytatum's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
gonna go by tonight and check on that RX i saw prolly a blown headgasket but has all the body parts + some that you need... will keep ya posted.. -
skeet : keep me posted Nug : wheres chesterfield auto parts? i've only been to richmond like twice in 4 years, lol.. that sounds like a deal tho, $125 for an engine.. i'm sure its a u-pull it place as well.. so i could theoretically tell what kinda mileage its got as long as the car as an instrument cluster still.. i'd be willin to take a chance on a block at that price.. it'd get stripped down regardless anyways.. i'd need some help pullin it, i can prolly borrow scrapdaddy's lift also.. get with me on this..

well after reading the warranty on that jdm engine on ebay, i'm gonna pass.. it does not cover overheating, dissasembly, and must be installed by a shop (gotta have a reciept) and another long list of things gotta be done for the warranty.. by the time i got done with all of that i'd be better off buyin one from ccr.. even if i did do everything they list, if it overheats once from a blown head gasket, they won't honor the warranty cause it overheated, lol.. kinda a waste of warranty beings we all know what these engines do.. I did send CCR and email regarding a short block.. gonna wait for that to come back, then decide wether or not i'm gonna sell my AWD celica to buy a longblock, or miss a couple bills this month and get a shortblock.. ddecisions decisions..
