  1. a good thing to ask yourself at this point is: what do i want to do with the car? an old loyal/gl ext. even in immaculate condition will only set you back about 2000-2500 so you've got room to modify but without market support where are you going to go? well in stock for these cars are good for learning, bloody reliable, and dirt cheap to maintain. in addition the long suspension travel make them seemingly ideal for use on logging trails. (i have a 5 speed d/r sdn and wgn) next up....early 90's impreza: in any form these cars (while a little porky) are a good choice for beginning rallyx, autox, and stage rally beginners. these cars have good market support and any ej drive line will bolt right up should the need/desire arise. the price while a little higher will be served well by the fact that after market parts can easily be had that will serve your developing skill. perhaps you may wish to have an early legacy turbo. decent choice in my mind. these cars have a sturdy engine which most, if given the chance, would love to take the short block from and build up for big power. one of the biggest problems with this car its...well its size, by most peoples standards this is a good bit of steel to be slinging around corners. not a subaru, sure...how bout an early corolla, a solid example will set you back a pretty penny an example with a bit of rust and a lot of miles can be had for a good price and will offer a good supply of used performance parts as its been years since any rear drive corolla has been produced you may find some slim pickings in some yards. personally...i would say that you need to decide what you want and how much (yearly) your willing to spend, this alone could be your deciding factor. theres an old adage that serves well "you can have it: fast, reliable, or cheap...you can only pick two, whats most important to you?"
  2. i'd be happy if i just knew where the "private entrance" will be. i don't get much chance to go south of the us/canadian boarder as for the bathrooms...yeah, i think thats important too:-p
  3. find yourself and early imprezza 1.8 awd. and do a jdm ej20g on the thing. trust me...it'll be enough
  4. used to happen all the time on old rabbits. if it happens again, just install a ten gage wire with a 60 amp fuse going from the alt to the bat, that should salve your problem nicely. basically as your car gets older so do the wires and connections. lets face it...if you had to run from the alt to the starter then to the battery you'd loose a little juice yourself.
  5. something else that i think is worth mentioning, seeing as we're getting into it, is that if you don't lower your car or install an anti-role bar...rwd can be a little sketchy...so just keep that in mind. basically what i mean is that front drive has a good bit of lateral stability, so when i change it to rwd only i risk having the rear step out unpredictably.
  6. ty, that was a well written and informed responce
  7. can only bring the one car so she can sleep there and back...but thats okay, i'll slam the spare tires on the wgn and all will be good. i swear subies are the only cars that just require a tire change to make things better again:cool:
  8. i agree, sometimes when you read some of the threads you can picture the author actually say this in real conversation...
  9. yeah i know its an old thread too... i wonder what would have been the result if the comparison would of been between the the mid 80's jeep and say a gl10 turbo?
  10. wow, you guys are hilarious. all i wanted to know is whether or not i was going to do more harm then good, lol. as for the change to rwd, yeah, i've got a d/r drive line which sees more tarmac then dirt, the fastest way that i know of that will allow me to do both styles of events is to remove the front shafts...thats all fab work around here gets a little scary because VI's happen at a whim so there wont be any rear engine anything coming my way. thanks for the responses guys...
  11. its gears? really? i was told that the rear power transfer was done via drive chain... cool! that makes me happy
  12. from what i can tell the slop is actually in the chain itself. total slop between transmission and the rear wheels i would guess to be 7 degrees.
  13. omg, i'm like so excited...but whatever car should i bring?...:-p Edit: the wife says WE'RE bringing the wgn
  14. i've been contemplating this for a while and the last concern i have is that my rear drive chain has a bit of slop in it, will this cause any issues? i have a second car so i have a "fall back" if it grenades but i had to ask.
  15. i'm looking at running my buggy down for the trip too. but i'm on vancouver island so its not that much further from here
  16. the big thing that you will need to watch for is local laws...i don't know what it like for you but here if you tried that without the right paperwork/documentation you could pretty much send the car to the crusher yourself. but that being said, have you ever slept in your car before. the one time that i had to lay in the back was enough to discourage me from doing such a thing. tents are cheap plus they don't require any extra paperwork. like i say, when it all comes down to it....its a mater of dollars and cents--how many dollars makes sense.
  17. based on how much it cost me to see edrach, it would actually cost me the same, both in time and in monetary value, to head down to washington for a couple of events
  18. you mean to tell me thats actually a normal event for you guys south of the boarder??? grrr....i think i'm gunna have to get the lsd in the buggy and head on down
  19. thats not that bad, its only 4 1/2 hours from here
  20. when was the last time you checked your timing and vacuum advance operation? on my 86 the vacuum advance was shot, causing the car to fall flat on its face when trying to accelerate on anything over slight throttle application. next would be to check all the seals around your carb. nothing major, have a look with the engine running see if you can detect air leaks (i found carb cleaner to be good assistant). if the seal at the base of the carb leaks...replace it. if the seals in the carb leak...replace the carb, the rebuilt kits can be pricey and are ultimately useless anyway plug gap is a very good thing to check. and while your at it take a multi-meter to your plug wires. i'm guessing your using your original coil...i'm thinking thats enough said there. when was the last time your fuel filter was changed? don't remeber?? change it anyway!!! thats all the basic stuff i can think of for the moment. make sure you post how it goes
  21. you think your bummed. its the closes event to me right now. try that on for size:dead:
  22. i think this statement hits the nail on the head. while think the car would mechanically top out at what would be quite a decent clip. the suspension on a 4wd wouldn't even be close to safe. on a side note i've had mine up to almost 97mph but it's not something i would do more then once.
  23. maybe our wives/girlfriends/significant-others should join a support group
