  1. it is NOT the same as the info supplied in the partial pdf fsm? according to that (in case you dont have it) they are for the Park, Neutral, and Drive indicator lights on the dash, and inhibitor switch on the trans. at least, it is the way I read the wiring diagram from the pdf that i have. I figured I would mention it since I looked at it anyhow. those files are helpful, but often frustrating:confused:
  2. If you go with the cat, make sure to put your oil drain pan in there with some of the absorbent grit in it. the cat will actually (maybe) use that to go to the bathroom in, believe it or not.
  3. good post. rope trick very good, and ive never heard that for seal removal before. slapping myself on the forehead as soon as this post is published.
  4. It's nothing sentimental, it is a very real phenomenon. I also blame the lightweight rear end. I realize that my 2wd is much lighter than a 4wd in the back, but the turning radius and the narrow track, and short wheelbasecombine to make a chassis that behaves very well, and they put a unibody on it that made you well aware of where the corners were. The ride height was higher because it was so lightweight, and balanced better (is my theory anyhow, for a grocery getter) I take the speed humps on my way out of my neighborhood at over 40mph without losing contact. (I never drove this fast on this road before they put in the speed humps. The turns you can throw it into are fantastic, it just pulls them right out. I was driving up to meet a gy i went to highschool with in his new 350Z, hadnt seen him in like 7 years.. my soob is very rusty and ugly.. but i pulled into a spot he thought he had made inaccessible through his flamboyant parking job It is a beast. see the " " video recently posted... gonzo man, absolutely freaking bonkers.
  5. well crap, why is that? ive found threads of mine in the past like that. bookmarking works too.. the point I was trying to make was that the thread doesnt go anywhere, if you can find it again... obviously that isnt always easy, but bookmarking is the answer if the search engine is a little more obtuse than I ASSumed. oops My apologies
  6. conventional carb wisdom seems to be that the best thing to do with the hitachi is throw it away and put on a weber. Someone is bound to say this sooner or later who has been there, done that.. but I'll say it now
  7. Oh, I know what rust is, believe me.... you havent seen my car!!! (i STILL need to post fotos of the rust here... but have no camera) Driving one home from colorado is a real possibility, but it still wouldnt alter the price TOO much.. add on like, 500 at least for gas and a plane ticket.. but it WOULD allow me to shop thru a more reasonable selection.. and I have a colony of friends in Steamboat Springs that would love to be visited while I am there. Unfortunately, this one is going to suffer from Not-Right-Now syndrome, as I am a bit short on cash to go flying cross country to buy a new sube. Good thought, though. the Ultimate Subaru Brokerage Society!
  8. have you any IDEA how much that would cost???? it reminds me of when i was like, four.. I know the story by proxy, I don't actually remember this.. but my dad got a job that relocated him from WPB to rural NC (Statesville, actually) and they paid Bekins to move us. At the time, my dad had two 5 gallon buckets about half full of nuts and bolts... the moving guys looked at him like he was crazy when he pointed at them and asked why they werent loaded up.. Moving metal costs money :- ( or else you could make a fortune out of your front yard freebies...
  9. reading the entire fuel injection chapters of the FSM a couple of times, and getting to know the material well also helps. Reading two different companies' description of both an SPFI and an MPFI system, and youve pretty much got the basics of EFI systems down pat. you got the FSM bgd? its in chapter 2, section 7. its page 11 of the second of the two pdf file fragments that float around here. good stuff, man.. should make all the best-seller lists.
  10. I have absolutely no explanation or evidence to support, but i wholeheartedly agree. Full tank of fuel plus stabilizer, and make sure it runs.. just starting has always proved to be bad for a motor in my experience. My mother worked half a mile from our house for three years, and it killed the motor in the van ro drive it half a mile twice a day, everyday.. Ideally, try taking it out whenever the roads are clear?? i dont really know what you folks deal with for winter, living in south florida.. but i DID live in the mountains in NC for 8 years when i was real young.. we didnt get a whole lot of snow those years though, and that was mostly when i was 5-8 years old so i was hardly paying much attention to automotive care and technique for winter driving... anyhow the stabilizer and full tank are just good storage habits for any internal combustion engine. If you can give her the occasional drive, I would recommend that over a simple start and idle.
  11. I hate living down here, and not being able to find beans as far as ea82 vehicles for sale. I must say I am so envious of those of you who have more to choose from than this. Sure the miles are low, but its an auto and its 1700 bucks!?!? There are other options in the state.. but none less than 200 miles away, and even those seem relatively pricey. There was one over in Ft. Myers a little while ago that sounded promising..relatively speaking that is. clicky to see that one.. woo hoo. and all Im asking for is a 5 spd XT, GL, RX, sedan, wagon, whatever.. for a hundred bucks. I can make the car I want out of mine and it if shes got a good chassis and the stick shift.. 2wd or 4.
  12. might also want to check the TPS (throttle position sensor) and the MAF (or whatever the proper abbreviation is for the part on your car )
  13. moosens, just remember to search for "moosens +transmission +swap" and it should come up the three speed automatics have no TCU, simple little slushbox. they are also (from what I hear) not really incredibly reliable beyond 100K, 200K, long mileage.. they are easier to kill than any of your alternatives, from what I hear. Mines got 140 on it and has no problems yet, but thats what ive read here..
  14. and i was afraid "jackassery" would be auto-censored by the forum filters. oops.
  15. under the SPFI system, it gives you all the info on pulling codes from the ECU as well as laying out the function of each component, what it does to the ECU, etc. It also details how to test each component. I am guessing your idle air control solenoid is stuck open, or something like that.. i need to go to bed so my terminology is pretty bad, but theres a valve that lets extra air into the TB when the engine is cold. it closes when it gets warm. that valve, or the circuitry that actuates that valve (the ECUcoolant temp sensor, right guys?) could be at fault. do you have an FSM? if you read that chapter you will know as much as I do. It seems boring i know but its not hard to get into, just dont rush and make sure you understand everything it says. if you have any issues "grokking" any of it, if it doesnt click in your head, go ahead and PM me and we can figure you out. if i can get some time before 4-6 am to sit by myself at my PC in the next day or two...
  16. Ive never cared for Mythbusters, as far as their actual testing and data collection methods.. the show is great, but i constantly find myself calling them out on like sixteen points between each commercial break where they dont follow good scientific method, and miss obvious things that would make the experiment in question more solid... I personally think just about everyone on the show is more or less constantly high on something, and try to see what each person is on, each episode.. "that guy just looks blazed, hes gotta be on some painkillers, this dude almost seems like he has been freebasing, and i think he got ahold of to many antidepressants.." but they have fun. I just rarely hold a myth that they bust, as truly busted. It happens, but not often... I haven't watched the show a great deal (maybe 10 episodes or so??) because i dont watch ANY TV at my house, only when im over at a buddy's or my parents.. but it seems like their experimental methods leave alot to be desired before using them as a primary reference
  17. its easy.. just find a way to fill the old mount (wherever the stock rubber used to be) with the urethane. my brother did it with the motor and trans mounts on his CRX. stiff, but functional and safe. longevity of such a mount is questionable, but its not "bound to fail" rapidly by any means. Would I do it for a track car? no.. offroading, i dont know what to say, i dont do offroad, so im ignorant there.. but its not a cheap band-aid. kinda one of those best-of-both-world ghetto rigs
  18. MY formula..... (1st gear ratio / 2nd gear ratio)*7000 = valve float, anyone?
  19. i dont know squat about RXes in particular, but these are awesome cars, and reading on this forum will educate you quickly. Also, the search function is your friend, as is the USRM. go to the top of this page, and in the top right corner there are four links.. one is USRM. clicky, and read away. also, if you use the advanced search function, you can select to search only in this forum.. helps cut down false hits when you search for "alternator" and get a bunch of WRX posts heh, the first two replies were like "yah this site is full of help" but little actual help to her sorry bout that.
  20. a book about weber carburetors is a GREAT tool for tuning them... most of my carb experience (beyond being an "assistant" is nothing but having read a carb book.. granted, that one was a haynes about SU sidedraft carbs, but books freakin rock you pay those guys to figure out how to tell you how to do EVERYTHING to the carb.
  21. BGD: the steering wheel on that thing is GREAT.. its just like mine, and the two contact points of the A and at a great spot.. and the "nubs" at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel are AWESOME, because theres more than enough there to let your hand hit on that as if it were a solid spoke.. but then a slight relaxation of the grip, and it can slip right through your hand without coming close to as much movement as it would require to let a solid "spoke" through your hand... The only advice I have is to thoroughly inspect the frame around the windshield for rust. mines got bad rust spots there, and the rear windscreen (sedan) at one point could be pushed at one corner, to form a 1+ inch gap between glass and seal Phiz: most cogent, peaceable, humanist post made on the 3 vs 5 bearing topic in the last six months. +1000. GD: youre a smart guy, who contributes alot to this site, often in the form of correcting misinformation. That is appreciated, but as your own title says, you act like an rump roast sometimes.. When a debate like this has been going on, and it has reduced to each side stating their opinion and browbeating about it.. now, i dont want to direct any more of this at any ONE, and its not even necessarily about This person, This subject, This thread, or anything.. I just have a strong mediator complex in my personality makeup, and cant help but put my two bits in at this point. It just needs to die!! or at least joke about it, razz him, try to summon a drop of respect and put a bloody smiley icon in even if you dont mean it, just to help us all keep this atmosphere clear.. Whats worse than a forum that degrades to people being "jerks"?? havent we all quit reading a message board because it "degenerated into a bunch of jerks and uninformed idiots?" those idiots only stay uninformed because the attitude decreases to a point where "noobs" arent welcome, and anyone with thoughts differing from that accepted as holy canon by that group of car guys that do still frequent the forum is laughed out of town as an idiot. And to anyone out there.. so our friend BGD has difficulties with clarity through a keyboard. Any of you talk to him on the telephone ever? meet him face to face? hear words coming out of his mouth, as opposed to those he is transposing onto a screen? People's brains utilize many differing modalities, you know. okay, now lets compare the number of folks who have spoken to him voice-to-voice, with the number of people who feel in their own minds (regardless of posts) that he is a complete and utter fool. Hmm?? any of YOU folks belong on the previous list? Peace is not a four letter word. Swallowing your pride and pretending to be funny about a jab, still lets you make the jab and put it on the record.. but it keeps the air smelling a little cleaner around here. Noah, GeneralDisorder.. i like both of you alot. you both have good senses of humour, know ALOT MORE than most of us, and spend alot of your time helping us for no real good reason. There have been many times when you (and others) made statements that might fall under the umbrella im criticizing here. Many of those times, I have agreed with your points, and felt that the user being "browbeaten" was a few cards (or a few suits) shy of a deck.. it happens. The mild condescension is a useful way to communicate between the lines that you _probably_ know more about whats going on than the person having the problem does. but this main bearing thing has gotten alot more bile in the air than I (at least) feel belongs there. please accept that he cannot fully phrase all of his particular reasons to prefer a 3-main engine for himself, and avoid making him look like a dullard about it. Lots of use have made jokes about it over the course of the last few weeks, jokes are cool. Implying idiocy is not. EDIT And BGD.. a little more time spelling out what you mean, a little more effort in punctuation, and a proofread before you post a moderately complex thread, would help the issue as well. An insult against your poor sentence structure may or may not be over the top, but it is fairly justified.. sometimes its utterly beyond comprehension, even to those of us who can wade through your "accent" normally, yanno? END EDIT Let there be peace on the USMB? Let it begin here.
  22. did you see the car the springs came from? check the odo? could be less than perfect springs? my mouth is open, in case i have to stick my foot in again... but I read your comment and wondered if maybe your springs had been subjected to some extreme wear.. now that ive posted about it, i bet you went and just bought new stock springs and I just look like a donkey again.
  23. okay, i googled alcyone... friggin awesome man... the pleiades has been my favorite constellation since way before i knew what anything other than the big dipper was.. i used to think it might be the little dipper, but eventually heard what they were called and got some of the mythology behind it... my dad bough an 89 AWD 5spd xt6 brand new, and ive had a soft spot in my heart for subarus ever since... but only about six months ago discovered that subaru == pleiades.... this is the first ive heard the term alcyone in reference to the XT6. I will state it black and white to save you the googling, yes, its the japanese name for the XT/XT6. "alcyone" means "the kindfisher," and its the brightest star in the constellation. freakin awesome... philosophers in the engineering and marketing departments... theres proof that Fuji Heavy Industries, Limited, Japan is one helluva company.
  24. ...no.... the camaro was vascillating his speed, prior to the approach of the honda. BGD was attempting to move over into the left lane, and when the camaro saw this, hed speed up to cut him off. he finally dropped a bit behind, and bgd, through being distracted by this guys chickenheaded driving, failed to notice the honda with ample time to make a patient lane change to move around. BGD seems to have made the lane change with some abruptness, and failed to notice that the camaro was once again, going from 55 to 70 effing around with him, hogging the passing lane and keeping the little car out, even though he obviously didnt want to just cruise along at 70.. if he did, the guy would have passed them both a long long time ago..... SO, the guy who HAD been doing 55->70->55->70->55, had dropped back and bgd was shifting lanes into one that he thought was clear. blind spot check is one thing, but a blind spot check cannot necessarily grant one a good idea of the vector of whats about to enter the blind spot... the guy came up from behind, accelerating (again) instead of yielding to the road hazard. the guy is guilty of overly aggressive driving, and possibly reckless endangerment (again, PROVIDING that my account is correct..) In case some of you hadn't noticed, our friend BGD sometimes has difficulty expressing concepts through his keyboard. that is by no means an indicator of intelligence, its simply a matter of modality.. and if you feel that sort of aggressive driving is at all warranted on a two lane highway, and you really feel that this guy had the right to be accel/decel/accel/dropback/accel like that, then sure, he wasnt to blame.. after all BGD was the one changing lanes. however, last time i checked most states had enacted legislation and statues to prevent someone from humping the leg of anyone else who might need/want to use fast lane like that.... The short of it is, the guy was being a j@ck@ss, and through his j@ack@assery he caused an otherwise avoidable accident, then fled. Guilty at least of one count, plus now any evidence to back bgd's statements up (such as the relative direction of the paint skids on the two cars) has just sped off into the sunset, and the only conclusion that CAN be drawn by the state trooper is that this guy came up with some story, because he can only see what happened to one car. If the camaro was so free of fault in the accident, then why would he not stop, get BGDs insurance info, file out a report, place fault to the subaru, and get his car fixed? sounds like a good candidate for a drunk (to some degree at least) schmuck who knew his car wasn't worth jailtime/prosecution for DUI.
