  1. are you positive its 2wd? how could you tell, aside from his failure to mention otherwise? because i have YET to see any of the dealer ads like that mention one of the vehicles being 4wd.. and no dealer-listed vehicle that was 4wd got one of those silly ads with the endless list of "options" like cloth interior and deluxe wheel covers.... so statistics are beginning to say that these guys might fail to list that, opting for the "remote trunk lid" or "bucket seats with recline" instead..
  2. okay, clicky for an ad i found. this ad lists the options on the car.. and you can tell it comes from a real scumbag used car lot, without a clue...heres a quote "Power Windows, Am/fm Stereo Radio, Central Locking System, Air Conditioning, Rear Window Defroster, Dual Power Mirrors, Child-proof Locks, Radial Tires, Deluxe Wheel Covers, Gauge Cluster, Clock, Trip Odometer, Tachometer, Tilt Steering Wheel, Interval Wipers, Remote Trunk Lid, Remote Fuel Door, Console, Vanity Mirror, Day/night Lever, Front Bucket Seats, Reclining Seats, Vinyl Upholstery, Cloth Upholstery, Accent Stripes, Body Side Moldings." I italicized the features that seemed either absurd, or WICKEDLY outdated to even mention... and i was generous at that, not including the Tach, the clock, the trip odo, and the intermittent wipers... but central locking system???? its gotta be a center-locking AWD, doesnt it?? or do you think it means power locks? because NOWHERE is four wheel drive mentioned!! i didnt notice he never mentioned the power locks until i quoted the text into the post, but still... as for the price, HAHAHAHAHAHAH i didnt even look twice at that, none of the ads im clicking on are even REMOTELY decent prices.. so i look at those as soon as i click. the rest i just look at because i wouldnt look at anything if i only looked at what was priced in my range. EDIT LOL i just found one that listed an "inside hood release"
  3. yah, he is right. putting the timing belts back on is not as straightforward as it could be. once you read through it, and especially once you do it, it makes perfect sense... but not before you do it. check the USRM, its well spelled out in there.
  4. i swear to god, this is NOT a thread-jack.. but i had a post (click) where i described where a specific vacuum line that had been disconnected and was causing a constant miss at idle.. and i have no idea what it was that the vacuum line was connected to.. but simply plugging it did not help. it went up to a small white canister-like object located at the extreme rear of the engine bay on the far passenger's side, and through that into another line that went across the firewall and into the cabin. I have no idea what it was, but it seemed to want manifold vacuum pressure for the car to run right. can anyone identify this object for me, and what it does, AND is it possible that this is something that you (GeneralDisorder) have overlooked, or is it something that you have bypassed? like i said, im not trying to steal the thread, but i never did get an answer and i AM trying to help you with your issue, too..
  5. good to hear about your XT6.. my dad bought one new in jan 89 (i was eight) and ive had a special place in my heart for soobs ever since.. and im sorry, but it is REALLY weird to hear two alaskan natives comlaining about the growth in recent decades, and specifically "dealing with the traffic" Im sure that you are right in what you say, and i am totally ignorant to the area of the country you are talking about, but i live in southeast florida (palm beach, 60 miles north of miami) and i am also a native of my hometown, with family going back 70 years.. so to me alaska is kind of an inverse function to whats happening here.. and im sure that there is alot of growth.. but like i said. It was funny when i read the dialogue, and then saw that you were talking about a region not in washington, or california, or vermont, but in alaska..... i must add, alaska kind of makes me think twice about your comment about the "hot out right now, no AC" as well.. since i live in a sweltering swamp with an AC that blows a decent bit cold during the heat of the day.. but just that...
  6. i like the torx driver/star tool idea.. because anyone who has had to buy and replace sets of those is bound to have a few odd sized extras around, or worn out drivers that have had the heads stripped.. and thats about the only problem i see with that idea. am i wrong on that?
  7. that blows... does this apply to my 87 GL10 sedan as well? it would seem to, but i have never looked at it with the thought of removing it, so i couldnt tell you what it looks like...
  8. NorthWet made a good point. You do know that to check ATF levels, you have the car running, warmed up, transmission in park. i found out that my best friend, who has been a mechanic for a few years now, somehow grew up not ever having been informed how to check ATF levels, and i know for a fact thats why a few of his trannies died. so people who should know better apparently DO sometimes miss this point in their education :- ) when i found out he didnt know, i laughed at him.. but thats because he deserved it. if this is your first automatic trans, then its certainly a more than forgivable mistake, yanno?
  9. this is a bit offtopic, but not ENTIRELY... After checking this post last night, I started wondering where the term gremlin came from. I am a fairly knowledgeable person, and folklore and linguistical history are two of my stronger points, but I had no idea what a gremlin was, technically speaking; nor did I know where the term had originated. I went to wikipedia and looked it up. Maybe its common knowledge, maybe not, but Roald Dahl invented the concept during his service in WWII, they were little demons that appeared at night or whatever, and sabotaged aircraft causing mechanical fauliures during service. Click for the wikipedia entry for "gremlin" I got curious at random and did some research on a subject I should have known about.. and discovered it was inextriacably linked to one of my favorite authors, whom I do know a decent amount about... so I got a big surprise, and was interested. I thought others might be too. sorry for the (somewhat) offtopic post.
  10. well, i got the car having driven another car that was dark inside, with NO dome light, for five years. the dome light worked. except, the driver's door didnt turn it on. Alas, i thought, ill just swap it with the rear drivers door... then i unscrewed it. that was actually my first experience with subaru engineering, after the timing belt install. needless to say, i was rather angered when i saw how short they made the wires.. this is an 87 GL-10, but all the loyales i saw at the JY were the same.. just barely enough wire to see about 1/8 inch pulled out of the doorjamb, full tension. Today i got adventurous finally and pulled of the plastic trim piece over the seat belt assembly.. surprise, there was my wire.. since i could actually see it, i went to the boneyard and picked up a couple switches and rubber covers, along with a hood cable, and came home.. and after discovering that subaru used Fuji Heavy Industries Brand Solder, which wont melt with a regular soldering iron, i wond up butt-splicing them in. it works, the wires are slightly longer now, and.. wow. i open my door, and a light comes on. its friggin MAGIC!!!!! :headbang: anyone else deal with this headache, or are those switches normally better than mine?
  11. Thats a neat idea, make a camper out of it! i think you might want to replace the windshield with some sheetmetal and just cut off at the firewall.. you could keep the windows functional, and the hatch, and keep your overflow fuel tank intact.. but you would have to build some cross-member to go about there the gearbox sits on the length of the car.. but then youve got your tongue welde on, you could send two braces out to the jacking point or so, and have a place to mount a generator to power your window AC  THAT would be quite nice!! wow what a funny looking little thing that would be!! leave the roof rack intact, etc etc!! haul half a wagon behind your wagon!
  12. even thogh the 91 leggy is contemporary with the loyales, its not really covered here in this forum. you want to post your questions/remarks on this car here in the newer generation forum.
  13. there is an xt-6 out in one of my junkyards.. anyone needs a radiator?? i know it was in there. id be willing to yank it and ship it for a small fee, plus the cost of course... i think theyd charge thirty bucks for it. i mean, i dont wanna be going and sweating for nothing, but i dont need to be making a fast buck on it or anything.. just a six pack or something yanno?
  14. i was only half joking.. my parents bought a ford E-150 van brand new when i was six, and that was the bus that drove my family around.. it had two fuel tanks, so to ME, any long range vehicle should only naturally have two tanks. my buddy just put a 50 gallon tank in his chevy dually, under the toolbox in the bed.. two fuel pumps on it, one for the engine, one goes into a manifold that either fills the other tank, or hits a thirty foot long 1/2 inch hose.... mudfest, offroading events, someone out of gas, or a portable gas tank for generators.. (hurricanes, you know..) uncle chris is da gas man :- )
  15. heh.. i just gunk'd my engine, and in giving it the careful look over afterwards to make sure nothing is still wet that shouldnt be (after 65+mph for about two miles, at full temp with AC on) and noticed a loose vacuum line i had seen on the pre-gunk inspection. i looked around before but couldnt find anything.. it was behind the passenger side cylinder head, just a small line coming off a larger one, with a connector still in the line.. checked it with motor running, has suction on it. looked around some more, and found it!! it went to another hose that connected to a plastic canister mounted on a bracket with a fuse, and a couple relays underneath. i cant recall what the fuse is for, but that should be enough of a pinpoint.. the vacuum appears to come thru this canister and then go across the engine bay and into the cockpit.. what is this line, and this plastic canister? plugging it in fixed a slight stumble at idle that has been annoying the daylights out of me!! i did it, and thought, check that stumble.. walked back to the muffler, and it seemed gone!! not believing it, i went and unplugged, came back in full force, so oh yeah!! YOO-reeka, BIATCH!!!! sorry. just an awesome feeling, because finding a leak like that usually takes me forever. this may be the first time i ever found an obvious leak like that, and actually fixed my stumble/issue at hand!
  16. lug brace is not a term i have heard before. thank you for clarifying :- ) english is so effed up, isnt it?? ive heard that called a spanner wrench, but i know for a fact that in england at least a spanner is a totally different tool.. i think its what we in the US call an open end wrench.. ive also heard it called a t-bar, or more commonly a lug wrench or tire iron.. and a tire iron is SUPPOSED to be what you use to pry a bead loose... or at least, it used to be.. but like i said, thanks for the clarification. i dont know that I, or most americans would be so thoughtful. maybe we should be, huh? off topic, i really like the international input on this forum. its refreshing, keeps the ol' brain on its toes.
  17. nah, leave the gas tank. and the fuel pump. set it up to be an alternate on road trips
  18. why not put an ej-22 in the gl?? im not trying to suggest, as much as beg the question. you folks are obviously MUCH more knowledgeable than i, but why not put a pwoerplant that can, from what i have read, reliably produce 250 hp into the 2400 lb vehicle? probly, 200 without the driveline, the later driveline/motor =~ what, 700 pounds?? because you seem to like the older skool here, and that seems to me to be the no brainer.. sorta like that wonder brumby from the post, yanno? anyhow, once again.. im not trying to suggest, im assuming you have addressed this idea as much as anything else. if im wrong, and the idea hasnt occurred to you, then nevermind, and i take full credit but why not? what are the downsides, what reasons do you have for not doing this? ive got my sports car (75 280Z) and i need to work on that, and in the meantime im delivering pies in my soob. i dont want the datsun to be a DD when i finish, but i dont want a neutered DD either.. so LONG-term, im looking at options for that other car.. thinking maybe small pickup, maybe older BMW 3-series, but the longer im a USMB member, the more i think (doubtful) fix up my rusty soob (bad rust) or pick up a soob i like.. im thinkin a 4wd 5speed turbo GL10 would be nice, but in the long run, i would like the EJ22 conversion even more.. so i am curious why you seem to ignore that option, you know?
  19. was the car FI?? you might wanna grab the fuel pump too. if it was AWD, what kind of rear end did it have? i know some of these cars got LSDs.. and i thought i had heard that some came with r200 LSDs.. which are $$$ for datsun people. i know this, also being a datsun people. <-- schizoid... i like the trailer idea :-) i saw an old VW camper van in the JY the other day that had a somewhat different camper top on it.. the dude had welded a complete beetle, backwards, on top of the van.. from just below the top of the fenders, up.. the windows were still functional, too.. :- ) both the van, and a beetle right next to it were in good shape, too.. restorable at least, and complete. it was sad, i love old VWs...
  20. might want to start a new thread with any new info or issues. that does sound like brakes are binding, make sure to check the handbrake cable.. but i havent had any problems with mine, so i cant really be of any help there.
  21. i cant recall where i found the link to my partial FSM, but it was thru this forum. numbers help anyone make a decision.. and once i thought "hey, let him know how much weight differences there are, etc.." i figured may as well quote you all the data i reasonably could. i personally almost never prefer a four door to a two or three door (ie, sedan over RX) but in this case i honestly think the sedan looks a bit better. but i havent looked at RXs too much.. and i dont think ive ever actually SEEN one. i cant really judge a vehicle fairly until i see it in person. ive had a few instances where i did a comlete 180 on a car i hated until i really saw one, and vice versa.
  22. okay, before anyone else fails to notice, this is a two year old thread.. someone please close this?!?
  23. heh, everyone is "willing to bet" that the gremlins responsible for our own problems on oyr cars are the same ones responsible on your car. at least you get brain fuel to help you find places to look for yours. the diversity of "solutions" gives one a good idea how many weak points there are in the electrical system.. namely, infinite. anywhere that gets burned out, corroded, melted, or otherwise buggered is gonna be a PITA to trace down.. but the ignition switch and fusible link power feed are two good places to check. ive also had similar problems with a particularly nasty fusebox in a datsun.. i had to unfasten it and clean the back with a wire brush and replace some connections to get the car to work right again. you were right about one thing though. its definitely gremlins. they hop in over the transdimensional portal allowed by the magic wire i mentioned.. and i will guarantee that somewhere you have a magic wire. keep putting your hand in places and wiggling wires to try to simulate your symptoms with the key on (no motor running) and see if you can kill it. if you can find a way to kill it, you are halfway to finding a way to fix it. just be careful :- )
  24. again, subject says it all. my gl-10 sedan has a luggage rack.. but one side member and the cross member are missing.. i have the whole thing but the screws to hold them down have no metal to go into.. they got yanked out, and without very solidly securing each point of this thing there is not putting it back together.. so im debating the worthiness of investment in a junkyard trunklid to put it back on. I would REALLY love to see some photos of what it looks like. i tried browsing thru the gallery but i need to pass out... and that would take too long. anyone know where i could find some easily?? i will be less lazy tomorrow but if anyone can oblige me i would appreciate it :- )
