  1. Just my .2 cents..... I replaced the rear window in my 87 wagon.....Total PIA! I'd rather replace an axle or my timing belts, than have to do that again:dead: As GLoyale stated, use the wire cutting meathod works the best IMO. If you havn't already started, be really careful with the trim pieces, those little button/connectors bust too easily. Cheers Chris
  2. I'm getting around 32 mpg from my 93 Loyale, and thats with a stuck lash adjuster, and a Yakima rack It's got around 177K on it.... Love my Loyale, Chris
  3. Thanks for the Tach info/ideas:) I met a guy in Boise that had a kickin Vanagon with an EJ25, He said a VW Mechanic in the Valley "Dougs Bugs" did his conversion, and set it up with a speed sensor. I'll try to investigate. Also found a VW web site that has a huge Vanagon section "TheSamba.com" Lots of conversion information. This web site (IMHO) is right up there with USMB Cheers, Chris
  4. That is one Sweet Vanigon!!! It's even the same colour as my 84! Please keep us posted on your progress! So....Doe's your 84 have a Tach? Do you (or anybody) know if a later model Tach/cluster will retro into the 84? I am already sick of the clock that doesn't keep time..... Thanks much for the pics, and good luck! Chris
  5. Welcome! Did you bring enough "White Russians" for all of us? Cheers, Chris
  6. Several to be seen in the Boise Area, ranging from hardly running to cherry! Cheers, Chris
  7. Shawn Thanks for the reply/tips! I am sure down the road I'll be asking more questions.... Cheers, Chris
  8. Just brought home an 84 GL It has 169K, the body is straight, and best of all the Wife (and kids) love it! It runs like a champ, so we'll be able to drive it while gathering up all the necessary goodies to convert it to EJ22 power. Cheers. Chris
  9. Nipper I think you might be on to something! I've had very little time to check on things...(already worked 50+ hours this week). I did check to see if there was any voltage getting to the pump, there wasn't If there is a relay, it isn't doing it's thing..... So, can you tell me where the realy is, and can it be checked? Oh, BTW, the car does have spark. Thanks much, Chris
  10. The car was resealed and tuned up at 220K, so she's gone a little over 20K since. I don't know how handy I am, but I've managed to change my timing belts (twice, along with seals, oil pump rebuild etc.) and hange an an axle on my Loyale. Tomorrow, I'll have daughter turn her over while I check for spark Etc... Thanks again, Chris
  11. Thank you all for the response! After reading my first post, I realised I wasn't so clear The car does indeed crank over, so I know the starter is doing it's job. It acts as though is't not getting fuel or spark, I don't smell any gas after turning it over? What is the best way to check for spark on EJ motors? What is the best way to check fuel delivery? The car also has 243,000 miles Thanks again, Chris
  12. This morning Daughters 93 Impreza wouldn't start... Tried to jump it, no go. Put in a known good battery, still no go... Check engine light is NOT on (so I assume there are no codes to read?). Checked all the fuses, all good... I can not hear the fuel pump when I turn the ignition on? (the fuel pump on my Loyal is obvious). I did a search, and found that fuel pumps rarely fail (but can). sensors can go bad, but no check engine light? What should I be looking for??? I've realized how simple my EA82 is..... Thanks much, Chris
  13. Sounds cool! Where are you going to mount the radiator? Front or Back? I'd be interested to hear how cool you can keep the engine? I've always thought an EA81 would do well in a "Bay Window" Bus:headbang: Cheers, Chris
  14. After reading about SPFI conversions to EA81's, and thinking that would be cool....The thought came to me, why not replace my very tired and ticking EA82 with a fresh EA81??? Yes I have given much thought to an EJ22, but since I'm mostly intersested in milage and reliability, I thought the EA81 might be the easier swap? Please, feel free to give your opinion. Thanks much, Chris
  15. Wow! I'm not the only one with stuck wheels...Every time I change out my road wheels to winter wheels, I have to whack them with a 5lb hammer.... And yes I've tried the coating with oil trick, didn't seem to help? Anyways the BFG is part of my road kit, just in case. Cheers, Chris
  16. Hey Hushton If you don't find a use for the engine, wiring harness, and ECU, I sure can! (Vanagon swap ). Cheers, Chris
  17. The other day I was admiring a really nice Vanagon near a job site. The owner came out, and I said "nice Vanagon" and he said "It's a Vanaroo", I think he was somewhat suprised when I new exactly what he was talking about! We had a nice chat, 89 Vanagon with a 98 EJ25. Told me it flys up the road, hasn't been given him any trouble since the conversion two years ago, and gets 22 to 25 mpg's! The cool thing was that he was really excited to share any information about the conversion, as well as info on Vanagons. Finding this guy gave me a new found hope of eventually getting my own "Vanaroo" built! Had to share, Chris
  18. elwood91 Sweet SYNCRO!!! Have you or are you going to convert it to Suby power? Cheers, Chris
  19. For what it's worth....My daughter bought a 93 Impreza with 220K on it, and it screams!!! Far smoother running car than my 93 Loyal (though not nearly as loved). Daughter has put 10K on the car, and it still running great! If the car is in good shape and in the $1000 to $1500, I'd be all over it. Cheers, Chris
  20. Snowman YOU ROCK!!! I have had an issue of hesitation/no power on hills, generally running like crap, can't figure it out problem with my 93 Loyal...It was time for new timeing belts, and I thought I would change everything else out as well i.e: plugs, wires, cap and rotor, O2 sensor, PCV valve, filters, etc....After all that I hop in turn it on, go down the road....Only to find that it still runs like ************e On top of this, no codes were blinking thus no direction! Read your thread, went out and sprayed the hell out of the MAF with CRC electronics cleaner, and well lets just say I can't beleive what a difference it made!!! I can actully pass other cars on the Hwy, fly up hills in 5th instead of 3rd, no more herky jerky!!! I am way happy!!! Thanks again, Chris
  21. Original oil pump, this will be the second time I've resealed it. Looks like I'll be drilling out the old bolts, and tapping. Hopefully I won't have to use helicoils...I still can't figure out how all five of the bolts broke, and why I wasn't leaking a huge amount of oil Cheers, Chris
  22. My 93 Loyale had 55k on the timing belts, and a bad case of "TOD", so I decided it was time to get dirty...Got everything torn down to the oil pump, when things went sour :-\ The first bolt I tride, I thought I had the wrong size socket, no resistance at all, found the bolt head in the socket. After a closer look I found that two bolt heads were already missing, and thought to myself "this would explane the TOD"...The last two bolt heads came off just like the first. My first thought was that I must have overtorqued them the last time I did a T-belt/oil pump job. I did a search, and found one member had broken an oil pump bolt applying 13 ft/labs as specified in the Haynes book. Well I looked in the book, and sure enough the book specifies 13-15 foot pounds. I took the pump off and found all the bolts had left some material left to grab onto, but DAMB are they stuck!!! So I gave them all a shot of PB Blaster, turned on the Grateful Dead (really loud!!!) and sat down to write this post. Has this happened to anyone else? Did I overtorque the bolts? is the Haynes book wrong? If it is, anyone know how tight the pump bolts should be? Thanks for letting me vent! Chris
  23. My Daughter just purchased a 93 1.8 Impreza with 220,000+ miles. I tell you what, that thing screams! It is a much nicer car than my 93 Loyal with 160,000 miles....(however I am still partial to my beloved ea82). For $300 you couldn't go wrong (esp. with a newer motor installed ). Cheers, Chris
  24. I have been really happy with my Yakima gutter mounted rack The other day I hauled a 4"x4"x12' iron pipe (well over a hundred lbs) home on the rack with out any damage. The rack has been on the car for several years with no rust or wear noted to the gutters. Cheers, Chris
  25. I found out that hitting a deer at 50+ mph will take the folding mirror right off the door Cheers, Chris
