  1. Ok, kinda what I figured. Here's the deal. I have a 5-speed in my '84 2wd GL wagon and a 4-speed in mt '84 4wd wagon which I'm parting out. The only issue is that the 4-speed makes a noise when you try to move the car (the only way to drive it is to put it in 4wd) When it's just in 2wd, the car makes a whirling? sound and will not move. I figured with the splines on the axel were screwed or something inside it. (not fimiliar with the inner workings of transmissions. Also, how hard is it to do a swap from auto. Any re-wiring? Can the manual trans be fixed/rebuilt?
  2. I've seen that some of you have grille guards/ push bars on your 'roo's. Just wondering where I might find one, or will I have to fabicate something of my own? How do they mount, my car is an '83 4wd with the black bumpers. Thanks!
  3. Just wondering if anyone could give me a ballpark price on what it would cost to rebuild the automatic in my '83 GL Wagon? I'm not sure if it needs it or not, but there is a possibility. Just something I'm curious about. Has anyone had this done? Is there any ways of beefing them up?
  4. after a jump in my '84 2wd and a hard landing the exaust came lose from the drivers side head (and the jump also crushed my tow hooks, who ever thought 5 feet of air would hurt a subie?) It sounded awesome, like a Harley on acid or something. The town cops loved it
  5. kind of on the subject..... How do I replace the dash speaker or is it even worth fooling with it. My car currently has the am/fm with factory tape player, but the tape player kinda stinks (I love elvis, but my tape of the king deff needs to leave the subie) I plan on installing a cd player and I wll prob put speakers in the door pockets or kick panels (if possible) Any ideas? I also would like to change the dash pad, but that may be too involved for my tastes.....
  6. I usually stick to my older subies, but I have to say that I just totally love the new ones too. After months of wanting to, I finally managed to get down to the dealership tonight to get some info and a test drive. I drove a 2004 Impreza 2.5 TS wagon in San Remo Red. It was gorgeous! All the fun stuff, cd, air, loads of power acc., roof rack. The only thing I didn't love was the wheelcovers... I'd much rather have the WRX wheels. I drove the car maybe 6 miles and up to 70mph. It had loads of pep and was just a blast to drive, super quiet and smooth..... deff not the 'roo of old. It was cool to that I talked to a salesman who has sold Subies since '85. He loved my '83 Wagon and we got to talking... he knew the saleswoman who sold one of my '84's brand new! I didn't get up the nerve to ask him if I could test drive one of the WRX STi's they have in stock. Maybe I'll go back and try to sweet talk him into that one I so want a new Subie, but I'll have to stick to my older 'roo's for the time being. Oh well... I can dream can't I! I'm considering sleeping with the '04 Impreza brochure I got under my pillow in hopes that the Subie fairy will bring me an STi :-p There is a subie fairy isn't there?......
  7. Ditto. the rear wiper on my '83 is doing the same thing, I haven't checked it out yet since I also have to do some work on the latch (what good is a wagon if the hatch dosen't open?!) Just one more on a endless list of things to do. Atleast I'm making some progress; today I got the skid plates off my '84 to replace the missing ones on my '83. They're calling for snow this week... tee hee hee
  8. Ok, so I haven't checked for the ecu yet, I did manage to get both fuel filters taken care of today. The rear one had a little crud in it, and after a test run it seems to taken care of the upper rpm stumble, from 2k up in 3rd gear it ran great all the way up. (pegged the speedo, hehe) It still however has an erratic idle and the stumble below 2k. I did a quick check for a vacumn leak as advised and I didn't discover any, I still need to go thru it really well. I'm still kinda stupified on this whole idle thing though.
  9. I had a thought that it may be the fuel filters; I haven't c hecked them yet, but will replace them asap. I will also check for the vacumn leak also... very plausable considering the hoses are what? 21 years old... I really have no idea if the car has an ecu, but just guessing I would say no. I have no idea when the last tune up was done, since I've had the car it has had: New starter, new water pump, new ignition switch, new neutral safety switch, plugs, maybe cap.... The rpm while in get ranges from 1000-500 and it barely keeps running at 1000. Out of gear it's like 1500 w/out choke and 2000 with the choke on. It's insane, but it seems to be what the car needs to keep running... deff not the best for gas milage eh? Anywho, I'd really love to get my subie back to normal, it really is a totally awesome car otherwise. Thanks for the help gang, keep it coming!
  10. Hi everyone, new here but not new to subies. I currently have 2 '84 GL Wagons (one 2wd, one 4wd) and an '83 4WD GL wagon with such features as automatic transmission , a/c and adjustable lumbar support. My question is this, my '83 has an issue with idiling while in gear. It idles rough and stumbles some up until about 2000rpm, after that it smoothes out... although it occasionally stumbles some (rarely). I was just wondering if anyone has any idea what this problem is (it does it in 2 and 4wd if it matters). My other 2 subies have had manual transmissions and an early 80's Subie with an auto seems to be a rare bird. Any ideas on what's going on? Thanks!
