ea axle, RWD mod, Ride height adjust pics *small*
I shoulda put this up a long time ago, i know its been covered with written explaination over and over, but heres some good pics. hopefully it will make sombodys first attempt that much easier than mine. my bumper can hold my car up, yours may not, be carefull and use common sense, also torque the big axle nut to 150ft/lbs, or very very tight... also some cars require more or less hammering than others, start out hitting lightly... edited and arranged by morganm, work performed by me on my ea81 hatch i need to post more than 21 pics

Gurus? ea81 specific?
didnt you rescently complain about gettin to the top of a hill and having to crank it over and over to get it runing after shutting it off? i would think ignition first if it only does it under load at higher rpms. if it was fuel pump, it would work fine untill your bowl started to get empty. coil the easiest swap... is this a test?

chat about PCV systems
ya, i was looking at those, im guessing they drill into the crank and vent it directly, high rpm=blowby no matter how "seated" the rings are. also, i was thinking about my old chevy, it had a vent to atmosphere, with a metal tube hanging under the car to make a venturi(?), to suck the gases out at highway speeds...

chat about PCV systems
i've built and ridden motorcycles for years and the common practice is to vent your crank case to atmosphere with a small filter on the end. since its cool for motorcycles, i've been doing it on subarus for years. I put a t between the rocker covers and vent it near the firewall. now most of my motors have blowby and venting leads to oily/gasy smells in the cab, so now im trying to figure out if a pcv valve will help me out, or do i just run the hose back further.. how bout one valve on each valve cover like V8s? so is the idea to use manifold vac to suck gasses out of the crank case, and to suck fresh air into the crank? every subaru i've had gets white milky mixture of water/oil in the hoses, wont this just puke into my intake, and slither down my carburetor? im kindof looking for a discussion of why/if you need them, or if its more for the emissions, and not so much performance.... im not looking for answers like "just do what the engineers that designed it say"

ea81 big or small valve head?
i've been sifting all day long... do hydro lifters go hand in hand with big valve heads? i have an 84 motor with solid lifters, does that mean i have the small valves?

Ram Engines again...
thats cuz they have no competetors, I think its all reasonable. im all about a high hp ea81, I'll be spending some money with them soon. if you want cheap engine internals you have to run a small block chevy.

Hatch ride height.
but lube them both long before you try adjusting them, on the front you'll need a 21mm open end wrench. you only get an inch or so

2.7l loyale monster
it seems like alot of people are thinking/trying to put the 2.7 into an ea car. it also seems like people who havent done it, or havent done it successfully keep on telling everybody that its easy, and can be done... well, i did it, and it is way too long and way too heavy. it doesnt have very good horsepower for how big and long it is. The timing belts/tensioners/pullys are wussy. the motor hangs way too far forward, and I had to make a front motor mount on my bumper to keep it from pulling the transmission up! putting an xt front end on it wont help much, because youd have to cut the unibody off at the firewall, and run the whole front clip. theres a motor mount on the front rad support, which also acts like a x member. theres no room for a radiator, and guys who have done it successfully(4?)and ran it for more than a couple hundred miles (like me putting on 12k) rebuilt the whole front of the car, or had a big lift so they had room above the motor, under the hood, or in the bed of a brat... Hindsight has shown me i shoulda went ej in the first place, theres a reason subaru only made the er27 for a couple years. an ej plate is cheap now, use the xt6 for the flywheel and clutch parts, and run a 2.2. now im back to the ea81 motor, so my radiator is way overkill, i have about 2 feet of space between my motor and rad, and my frame rails are clearanced for no reason at all =] hell, my front lift kit was even overbuilt with less camber to handle the weight of the big six... or Japanese Big Block as i used to call it.

1986 EA82 GL wagon blues
every subaru i've ever had had a feedback carb. my 86 ea81, my 84 ea81, my 86 ea82, my 86 brat...none were built for cali. i think the "rebuild" on the carb may be the prob. whenever anybody takes one apart its all over. i've had good luck with removing every hose except fuel in(no return, or vent), vac advance for your disty, brake booster and cabin air controll.

6 lug conversion
i drilled mine on a brigeport and i know i got them right on, but, i always use the 2 original studs to locate the wheel in the right spot before i tighten the other 4. i painted my two originals with orange paint so i can always find them. 6 lug is the best, and they look so much cooler than 4!

5 speed swap, how fast am i going?
I have a 5 speed tranny in a ea81, i also have 28 inch tires. does the 5 speed tranny change my speedo reading, or can i just worry about my tires messing it up?

Interesting thoughts...
I had an er27 in my hatchback, and after a couple years runing it, i put it back where it belongs... in my XT6. its too long and weighs too much, especially if you hang two turbos off of it. wouldnt a big turbo and proper fueling get pleanty of power out of the ea82t?

Lowered hatch with lowpros?
So whats the easy setup for lowering an ea81 hatch? Can i just take some pressure off of the rear torsion bars, and cut my front springs? im not talking alot, just 2 inches maybe. also i have the same pugs that Zap on this brat http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=81811 what would be a good combo of semi low pro tires and "lowness" to make a good street hatch? and if theres any threads that already cover this, shoot me a link please =]

New kicks for the Brat
