  1. im not completely sure about how the pump is turned on, but im pretty sure it turns on when the distributor turns. also, im pretty sure the pump gets the 12volts+ with the ignition, and the ground side is the switch that turns it on. theres a fuel pump relay somewhere along the way too 12 volts should be fine to run a fuel pump. do what i did for a few thousand miles, ground the pump right there under the car, and run a how wire from the fuse box so its on whenever the ignition is on.
  2. i've seen a few volkswagens done up like that, bug motor and tranny in the rear of the pickemups. while your at it, leave the front motor in there too!
  3. yeah, theres a bit of metal you have to remove to make room for just the timing belt covers. sounds like loads of fun, just having the NA er27 in my hatch was great!
  4. the ea82 manifold kinda fits, but it looks like it will limit my disty adjustments, and a water line had to be relocated, it'll work for now but, as far as my motor goes, i've started to put together a dual carb setup. Im going to use two 39 millimeter constant velocity side draft kehein carbs, with a balance tube between the two. once i make the manifold i can deck the heads as much as i want, as long as i "adjust" the pushrods correctly, and watch for piston to valve clearance. my pushrod 1200cc harley makes 86 hp to the wheels, with one 39mm carb. when it was a 883cc it put down around 60hp. half of my 1.8 ea81 is 900ccs so if i could squeeze even close to 60 out of each side... wahoo!
  5. you might find out that your brat will only have two headlights by the time you get the motor in there. the heads are a weak link, but so are the timing belts. when you start turning fast rpms, and pushing alot of boost, dont the belts become a big weak link too?
  6. my rear u joint is bad on my xt6 so im running it in front wheel drive for a while untill i come up with a good solution. the u joint is "staked" basicaly its held in with about 10 little hits with a punch to hold the cups into the driveshaft. parts books at parts stores dont list one since subaru wanted you to replace the whole drive shaft if it ever failed. so i did some measuring and i think i found a u joint for another car that will fit... but has anyone ever done this? any part numbers? thanks
  7. exactly, i've done the efi thing and am looking at getting back to basics.
  8. i've got one with 20k miles on it, it was chrome, but now its rusted brown, never had a problem. i think they had a bad run a couple years ago. Mcbrat, I used to be a ea82/er27 mpfi guy, but after trouble shooting efi problems, and having timing belts fail i have opted for the bullet proof ea81. Hopefully i can turn the spare one i have into something that wont make me angry every time i floor it. im glad i found this post, nice recipe. Did the 5 speed make a big difference?
  9. I still talk with MorganM (pictured above) on a weekly basis. They have a real low first, theres tons of aftermarket for it, and its easy to put 30 inch tires on it but there are draw backs. its wheel base is so short it likes to try to spin sideways on steep hills! its happened to morgan a few times. and the day that pic was taken it happened to me, almost rolled it. subarus are pretty untouchable climbing steep hills, but on rocks where articulation is key, subarus fall behind.
  10. Hey everybody, its been a while, 50s chevys and a new wife has taken me away from subarus for a while, but its good to be back, looks like alot of things have happened, allied ups and downs, sjr has some great looking stuff, and ej plates are easy to get?!?!?! Up untill now i've always ran ea82s or er27s in my 86 hatchback but im so tired of EFI im going old reliable with pushrods, carburetors, and a 5 wire engine compartment. a few years ago there was all kinds of info on here about upgrading ea81s but it looks like the ej swap has taken over and theres not tooo much info on here anymore. Is an ea82 manifold and/or carb an upgrade for the ea81? If i go with the dvg weber carb is an ea82 manifold better? Are there any cams that arent geared just towards high rpm airplane engines? How can i get more compression with stock pistons(not ea71s)? does decking the head mess with pushrod length/adjustments in hydrolic lifter motors? Are the small valve heads more or less desirable for low to mid range performance, compared to larger valve heads? solid lifters better than hydrolic? im not trying to get as much power as my old 2.7 but i gotta have more than the 65 or so the ea81 puts out...
  11. my 89 xt6 has 276k miles on it, and i only went to a newer engine 2k miles ago because the timing belt tensioner went out on the old engine.
  12. i put an er27 into my hatchback and used an ej radiator, its actualy about where the stock ea81 sits, you just need suuuuuper duper low pro fans. you'll need custom motor mounts, and you'll have to bash the rear frame rails about a half inch or more on each side. fits no prob
  13. and if its an auto tranny it makes things even worse... who would have thought cars werent made to drive in reverse for miles at a time?
  14. usualy ignitors that they sell in catalogs are for lighting. swaped ignitors, and it didnt fix my no spark issue, its not a coil, might be the distributor... sucks
  15. ok, i just want to see if i got this straight. the distributor sends a signal to the computer, which sends a signal to the ignitor which sends the signal to the coil to ground it momentarily so the disty gets a spark, for the spark plug... right? so if my ignitor is broken, no spark to coil, right? the ignitor is the little black thing on the coil bracket right? if i got it right so far, do spfi and late mpfi motors share the same ignitor as my xt6 engine? im hoping any ea series car that has an optical disty will have the same ignitor. thanks for any thoughts
  16. anybody have the subaru part number for the ignitor on the xt6? my parts guy cant find it thanks for the help
  17. the chevy guys tell me its off of some trans am or camaro. it said 396 or something when i got it. lowered my engine bay temps, and the coolant temp, when im offroading all slow. but runing with no hood is the best for coolness... but i have an h6 so not everybody is doing it out of necessity, just for looks is cool too
  18. for 700 bucks, id buy two subarus and just floor them into obsticles. cant the gears be had out of junkyard cars for alot less? anybody ever drive a samurai, or a toyota 4x4? even with 31s they crawl about half as fast as a stock(subaru)dual range with stock tires. tcase mod still seems like the best bet for better gearing.
  19. im seriously thinking about this with my ea81 two wheel drive crap box... it seems like a much better option than e85
  20. theres no need to open the bleeder screw once you have the tool.
  21. having one less cylinder doesnt make the engine able to rev that high. its all about valve controll. not sure what a justys redline is, but you wont make any power past it without cams and alot of engine work... and a turbo.
  22. i used to stare at one every day, when i went to the bar for lunch break:drunk: 4wd rs
  23. oh ya, this only works with carbureted models. and you have to have the hose draining into the carburetor, the carb wont suck it in. the needle and seat inside the carb will stop the flow of fuel into the bowl, when the carb has enough fuel inside.
  24. i always say theres no way to get stranded in a subaru, especialy a carbureted ea81 with pushrods. say your fuel pump breaks, shorts out, falls off. theres no need to sit there like a chump and wait for the tow guy. idealy i would use an oil bottle so it doesnt disolve the glue on the paper, holding my soy milk carton together, but that was all i had. crawl under the car, and fill the container a little more than half full, use a knife, or even screw driver to bore a hole about half the size of the hose going from your fuel filter to your carburetor. shove the hose through the small hole, and it should seal pretty good. heres the crappy part, you have to vent the bottle, so poke a hole in the highest point(thats why you dont fill the bottle up all the way. so ya, you might have to do it a couple times, depending on how far you need to go, but it works! i also had a motorcycle gas tank i was going to use, but i decided i would have had to run it home with the hood in the back since it wouldnt close.
