hehe I remembered I had a basketball out in the shop. Made sure it was aired up and sure enough, rolled right on under the Soob with plenty of room to spare. You might need to pick a bigger ball for checking lifted Soobs. (I'm just givin' ya a hard time. All in fun.)

^ Yup. I've seen Swampers in 27" for 14" rims for under $100 each before. And usually they hover right about at $100. http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?jeep-sid=165&plID=450&partID=16266

hehe. Yeah he's pretty much got that fuel loving Weber sorted out now too. Turns out it was "readjusting" itself while driving. I'm just suprised I was able to tow him practicly back to Sandy (nearest open station) from just north of Olallie.

Now ya gotta do the dash! Looks good.

I kick around the idea of a lift. But I seem to keep up with the Jeeps and such I wheel with no problem without one. So the NEED for a lift has never really been there. And I don't break parts as often as the lifted rigs I know........ Just a few extra dents in the floor from time to time. So I'm staying stock for now. If I'm gonna lift it, I'm gonna solid axle it, I don't have the $$$$ for all of that right now and I'm not going to do it halfway. Everyone has thier own goal for thier Soob. In the end all that matters is we are all taking them out and enjoying them.

I'm not in WA but I'm sure (at least I hope to) I'll wheel with you guys at some point. I like that one. In fact, if it's not chosen, I'm at least making up my own personal sticker for the Soob. With Scott's permission of course. Kinda think some humor should be included just because. I mean the rest of the 4x4 world will look at us a bit crosseyed anyway (at least the ones that have not seen what a Soob can do, I've made a few believers myself). So why not laugh at ourselves a bit? It'll help rub it in when you clean a technical hillclimb a Rubicon just blew a transfer case on, and they watch you do it all the while telling you that you have no chance...... been there, done that. Also I think the "Northern Alliance Offroad" one is cool if it's available these days. Can encompass WA and OR as things grow. Only prob with me sticking one of those stickers on my rig here is there is a snowboard shop in Sandy called Northern Alliance. And they have tons of different rigs plastered with it around town.

+1 Only wanted to make info that could affect wheelers available.

Nice. I'd clean up the chassis real good and do some sort of good rust proofing in the tender spots. I grew up about 15 min west of Detroit (and moved back and forth a few times since). MI loves thier salt.

Here's my list. (I'm sure I'll forget something) folding army shovel fire extinguisher (shovel and extinguisher are two things by law you have to have when travelling off road in Oregon, they can nail you for not having them onboard, check your state's rules) one 50' kinetic recovery strap (it yanks back) one 20' strap with hooks one old short strap for treesaver use and if ony about 10' is needed a couple shackles for the straps a come-along (mines a 4,000 pounder, bigger would actually be better though) a toolbox with a small collection of tools in it duct tape electrical tape zip ties (some standard sized ones and some HUGE ones) small roll of bailing wire (wish I had this back when I tore off the exhaust system....) two of the scissor jacks a piece of 2x6 for jacking in soft stuff first aid kit box of granola bars water 2.7 gal Jerry can on longer trips full size spare a few hose clamps small compressor Oil Brake fluid A few bungee cords just in case some rope old shipping pad to lay on if i need to crawl under it. Machete decent torch style lighter if I need a campfire for some unfortunate reason (and I'm not planning on camping) For sand I'll throw in a few pieces of 3/4" ply to use for helping out of self dug holes. And I always have the CB in and sometimes remember to throw the FRS radio in as well. Always have the GPS as well as maps/compass. A good knife and my multitool are always at my side too. All and all when I go and hit up the scales to check. It does not weigh too much more than it did when I was not carrying all that stuff and still had the back seat in. So the weight penalty is not too bad. A pic from awhile back. it was kind of messy and the chains are gone now. The Jerrycan has a home in a little rack where the chain box is sitting. It seals very well (pre-CARB can) and is strapped down well with eye bolts through the floor. strap is usually bundled up and put away, but I had just yanked an Accord out of a snowbank that day. and a GM 100 amp alt! don't turn on a bunch of lights and heaters out in the boonies without one. If it was a DD I would not leave all that stuff out in view. But it's only a trail machine so it's not such a biggie.

Yeah the 4x4 site had a note about some links not working (they in turn had copied it from the BRC site I think). I had not figured out how to get them right though. Maybe have to search for it and fix it. *EDIT. Should work now. If not you can got to the main site and go to "action alerts". http://www.sharetrails.org/

I don't know.... I still have the original axles in my EA81. Been welded up for quite awhile (longer than SC has even had his hatch) and not had a problem. *knocks on wood* For the longest time my tires were bigger as well. Now we run the same size. Always been doing the same trails since he got his. I'm thinking it's still a rear suspension geometry thing as he is lifted and I'm not. My diff still sits higher than his and I think it may be allowing the rear axles to be level on climbs. his will get squatted more. Thus streching them. Not sure. It has gotten better after he did some changes, but seems a bit more work is needed. Just glad he had a spare front with him. Or it would have been a long trip home.

This is not really trails closing. But it might lead to it. Remember, it's cheaper to put up a gate and closed sign than it is to maintain and patrol. BLUERIBBON COALITION ACTION ALERT! Tell Washington Legislature: Hands off our ORV Fund! Dear BRC members, supporters and action alert subscribers, Our partners in Washington State have just forwarded us information on an important issue that needs IMMEDIATE ACTION. Tod Petersen, Political Action Committee Chairman for the Washington Off-Highway Vehicle Alliance (WOHVA) just emailed with word that the budget proposal released today by Washington State House Ways and Means Committee steals ALL of our Nonhighway and Offroad Vehicle Activities (NOVA) funds for the next two years and puts it in the general fund. Tod reports that the House Ways and Mean Committee will hold a hearing today, only hours after the bill language was released to the public. This would appear to violate Washington State House Rules. The Proposed bill is online: http://leap.leg.wa.gov/leap/Budget/Detail/2009/ho0911bill_0331.pdf Other supporting reports: http://leap.leg.wa.gov/leap/budget/detail/2009/ho0911p.asp Tod is asking us to alert all BRC members in Washington State and ask that you contact Ways and Means committee members immediately. Please contact members of the Washington State House Ways and Means Committee and tell them NOT to rob the NOVA account. Contact info is below along with a few talking points. Be polite. Be brief. Do it NOW! Thanks in advance for your involvement, Ric Foster Public Lands Department Manager BlueRibbon Coalition 208-237-1008 ext 107 PS: Please pass this important alert on to your friends and family, and please ask them take action as well. Sample Comments: Please DO NOT redistribute funds intended for the Non Highway and Offroad Vehicle Activities account. This account was created when offroad vehicle users volunteered to waive their legal right to a fuel tax refund in exchange for a self-directed state account to provide funding for programs that benefited offroad vehicle activities. These same citizens volunteered to have their license tab fees increased so long as those monies were also placed in the Non Highway and Offroad Vehicle Activities (NOVA) account. To redirect the funding away from the NOVA account would be nothing short of stealing from the very same citizens that willing gave the state their hard earned money. Furthermore, these funds are protected by the Washington State Constitution, Pursuant to Article II, Section 40 these monies must be used for their intended purpose or refunded. The State Supreme court has repeatedly reaffirmed this requirement. So I've been doing runs with the "Pacific Northwest Backroad Adventures" guys. Scoobyclimbs and I headed up to Zillah, WA on saturday to meet up with the group. (and right away we both kicked ourselves for not letting guys here that live around there know about it) Seems almost everything was in pairs. All various levels of "builtness". We had 2 Soobs, 2 Bronco2's, 2 Toy FJ's, 2 explorers (one of which made the top of rollover hill), 2 Toy pickups, 2 XJs, a CJ7, a YJ, and a Sammi. Went and played around. Mostly easy stuff with a few more technical trails thrown in. Lots of sandstone which gave great traction but sometines had a ton of dust on it which did not. Gregg broke a front and a rear axle at the same time . He has a talent for it..... hehe Good thing he brought a front or it would have been a long trip home. One wheel drive in back in low range. (for some reason his hi range 4WD does not work, goes straight to low) Anyway some pics. I'll make the very few Soob ones big. The rest will be clickable. As more of the Soob pics show up on the PNWBA site I'll post 'em up. (we were too busy driving to get out for pics, but other guys got some of us.) "The Slab" And a video. I'm in the beginning. And near the end is the footage of Gregg blowing his axles. You can hear the rear one go and see it hang down. Hope to see some other vid show up as well as there was a pro style big camera out and about in the group (one of the guys does vid stuff)

Made perfect sense to me.

Lookin' good! I see you even camo'd the fog light grills.

Yeah this is originaly from S.A.N. I'm not signed up with any of the sites, but I scan them and watch out for this kind of stuff regularly. I see this got moved. Now I know next time. (we can only hope there will not be a need for a next time)

This is sweet.

This has been bouncing around for awhile. But it seems to be getting more attention ATM by the 4x4 boards. Mainly affects those of us in Oregon, but if it goes through could get picked up by other states. I put it in the off-road section as it would affect those wanting mud tires and such the hardest.... At least at first. It does cover other things as well. I know we try to stay away from the political stuff here but this could make the off-road section near obsolete for us in OR. (pulled from another site) URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT Oregon Introduces Bill to Prohibit Sale of Aftermarket Parts At the request of Governor Theodore Kulongoski, the Oregon Speaker of the House has introduced legislation (H.B. 2186) to prohibit the sale and distribution of aftermarket motor vehicle parts if alternatives are available that “decrease greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles.” The bill is primarily focused on aftermarket tires and would authorize the Environmental Quality Commission to implement enforcement regulations, likely based on a rolling resistance calculation. We Urge You to Contact Oregon Speaker of the House Dave Hunt and Members of the Environment and Water Committee (Contact Information Below) Immediately to Request Their Opposition to H.B. 2186 * H.B. 2186 would regulate vehicle fuel economy, an authority reserved to the federal government. * H.B. 2186 could ban tires that may have improved performance, handling or appearance features, based solely on a rolling resistance rating. In addition, this program could easily distract consumers from focusing on more important safety issues such as tire inflation and overloading of vehicles. * H.B. 2186 would force consumers to purchase only original equipment manufacturer (OEM) tires because the program essentially exempts OEM-selected tires and unfairly implies that they are superior to aftermarket products. * H.B. 2186 could prohibit aftermarket parts designed to either personalize or optimize specific vehicle performance attributes including handling, towing, suspension, fuel economy, etc. * H.B. 2186 provides broad authority to government regulators and could limit a range of aftermarket parts currently available to consumers based on the subjective determination of government regulators. DON’T DELAY! Please contact Oregon Speaker Dave Hunt and the House Environment and Water Committee immediately to urge his opposition to H.B. 2186. Cut "teeth" in the end of a piece of old exhaust pipe to use as a wrench when I needed to put new output seals in my GL's transmission. Large snap ring pliers worked but the pipe was faster. And it seemed easier to keep track of the number of turns for the right bearing preload. Not really a real tool, but still useful. I assembled a kit of large washers, some different small sections of pipe, and a good axle nut for pulling front axles through the knuckes. I just stack and restack as needed. A ziptie keeps it all together between axle changes.

Yeah more designated areas would cut the illegal wheeling down some. But the catch is. First the illegal wheeling needs to stop. Whenever talks are started on making a certain area a legal OHV area. And the bad wheelers still keep on using it while the talking is going on. It has almost always ended up pissing off the landowners whether they be the state, federal, private, whatever to the point they cease talking and just shut the area down for good. I've seen it time and time again on club sites all over. Good wheelers pissed cause the bad wheelers got negotiations stopped and the area was lost forever. So the fact illegal wheeling happens does not help the case for getting more areas open. It actually hurts our argument for the need for more areas. It just makes us all look like idiots and no one wants to let idiots play on thier land. And they'd much rather just put up a gate and fine us into the poorhouse. The direct "We'll just keep doing it till you give us a spot!" method will not work for this.

Not sure if it'll affect too many here. I think me, scoobyclimbs, and MichealAppel are about the only ones who regularly head out there. But just in case. As I don't think all affected trails are actually marked as closed. But they will be reopened as things dry out! *Pulled from another board This was as of the beginning of this month (March 2009) Browns Camp OHV Area The top part of the Firebreak 5 Trail has been closed for the duration of the wet winter months to prevent trail damage and erosion. When it dries out it be opened for the summer. The Crushers loops remain open and can be accessed from the top of the trail by continuing up Saddle Mountain Road and staying left until you reach the top of Firebreak Five. A segment of the University Fire Power has been closed for the duration of the wet winter months to prevent trail damage and erosion. When it dries out it will be opened for the summer. The open segment of trail can be accessed off University Falls Road or Beaver Dam Road (they always block this one off for winter) A section of the Chute Trail is temporally closed from the South Fork Wilson Rd. to University Falls Road due to timber harvest operations. A segment of the Airplane Hill Trail has been significantly damaged and has been closed temporarily until the damaged section can be repaired. When it dries out it will be repaired and opened for the summer. The Oregon Department of Forestry will be working with local trail use clubs to repair the problem. Respecting this trail closure will allow us to more quickly repair the damage and open the trail. Enforced under: OAR 629-25-070. A segment of the Hogs Back Trail has been significantly damaged and has been closed temporarily until the damaged section can be repaired. When it dries out it will be repaired and opened for the summer. The Oregon Department of Forestry will be working with local trail use clubs to repair the problem. Respecting this trail closure will allow us to more quickly repair the damage and open the trail. Enforced under: OAR 629-25-070. Also I read there have been break ins around Browns Camp. Seems it may have been a frequent ATV rider there. As far as I know he and his buddy have been caught. But still never go too far from your wheeler if you get out for some reason. Last victim had all his tires deflated and windows busted out. Not to mention a big Best Buy bill on his cards.

High Mileage On E81 Subies
TeamCF replied to roadsubiedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Got about 316k on mine. And judging from the rod knock on start up... I'd say it's the original engine. Plus I'm only the 3rd owner and the guy before me had it a long time. He hated to see it go but needed driveway space. Still runs strong! (other than the startup knock) I stuck a "fresh" disty in it though. The old one was so sloppy the rotor was eating at the cap and it got to the point it barely ran. Luckly I have an engine on the stand with about 150k on it waiting to go in. -
I had to take a ton off of my 100 amp GM alt as well. Must be a smaller case. I'm thinking if it ever needs replacing I should be a good guy and NOT take it in for the core. That could really mess with some poor guy that gets it (if it makes it past the rebuilders) after me trying to put it in his pickup or something. Scoobyclimbs did his after seeing mine and just fabbed up a new mount. He thought ahead about the core thing. I'll proly do the same on the next one.
