hose under turbo
If you remove the turbo, you will save yourself many headaches and busted knuckles. I did one with the turbo on the car still and it took forever!

price question for AC recharge
you'll need to convert it from R-12 to R134A which they make a kit to do so with. Last one I got was roughly 70 bucks but that was about a year ago, maybe longer so the price might have dropped. Then you can get your AC recharged at a local shop for anywhere from 50-100 bucks.

YAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! tax returns!!!
best way to get it to TDC. Pull the number 1 sparkplug and thread it back in two threads or so, enough for air to escape past it. Then take a socket and ratchet (I use a 7/8" socket with a 1/2" ratchet) and turn the engine over. You will hear the air escaping from the #1 cylinder. When the sound of the air stops, look for timing marks on the flywheel because they will be right there. If you see no signs of timing marks in the general area on the flywheel, turn the engine over again. I like to lean over the engine with my face down by the timing hole in the bellhousing while turning it over. Some people have other ways of doing it but thats the way I always seem to do it myself. You can also pull the #1 sparkplug totally out and put your finger over the hole to feel for compression.

Adjustable Cam Pulleys (again)
I can source up a few sets as well. I curently have 3 sets in my shop and can get about a half dozen more or so. I'm still very interested in a set too since i was one who wanted a set way back when you started making them;)

ball bearing under spring
Yes, there is supposed to be a ball in there. Its a pressure relief valve and yes, it will mess stuff up if its not in there.

So my dad's not a big Subaru guy...
ACTUALLY Jeff, diesels only product soot which is what the black smoke from the exhaust is. Diesels are much cleaner engines then gasoline engines are. Also, quit hijacking my thread!:-p This is my thread to hijack:lol:

what ive found in vegas... PaP..
LUVMYBRAT has an awesome running gen 2 turbo Brat but infortunatly, due to major rust issues, will have to be put down. The heart is going into an '84 t-coupe in silver while the tranny might make its way into his maroon '84 t-coupe. More work for me... yay. Yes, if it is in good condition, see about getting it because even in a slightly fixed up condition, they'll still fetch quite a bit of money:D

ATTN PDX: anyone have a clutch alignment tool?
I have one of those from a gen 1 tranny. I think its at my parent's house in Oregon though...

RWD Conversion & a Rear LSD on a EA81 4speed....
Quit bein a wussy and put that dang thing in:-p . If you break a rear axle, I will send one to you free of charge. I only got like 3 of them laying around and I don't even have an EA81!

So my dad's not a big Subaru guy...
My dad told me earlier on the phone, which is when he told me about it, that it runs real nice, shifts smooth, and he said he actually liked it! The main reason he bought it though, was because my younger sister is finally getting her license and learning how to drive. She's too short to drive my '88 Camaro which has a v6 in it (thank god) so my dad I guessed thought this was the perfect car for her. Plus she likes the color and the way it looks. Once I move back to Washington, I might have to convince her to make to 4wd and go out wheelin it a bit:headbang: Since I'm gonna be getting a EA81 myself to lift and wheel:clap:

what ive found in vegas... PaP..
Rob, the pic that he put up was of the EA81 wagon he also found as well.

So my dad's not a big Subaru guy...
but he just bought an almost mint '87 GL EA81 hatchback for $900! Its the tan color with the redish tint to it, has an EA81, FWD 5-speed, with only 84,000 miles on it! Has a scratch down the driver side with a small dent as well but he says it runs like a champ! My dad of all people, bought a Subaru... Way to go! Now if he'd only use the internet, he might come on here and see what crazy things we do to them, hehe:headbang:

RWD Conversion & a Rear LSD on a EA81 4speed....
Yes, that would be the one and yes, it is in a $18,000 condition right now. Actually, value of the car as it sits is $18,883 according to the dealership a couple years ago. Fully restored.... upwards of $45,000:eek:
-
RWD Conversion & a Rear LSD on a EA81 4speed....
Umm no, thats just plain wrong in so many ways. One of my Camaros is worth upwards of $18,000 so there's no mullet driving in it.

FHI were thinking of the future when they built my car
My '78 Brat has a similar compartment in the dash as the EA82 and thats where I hid the switch for my stobe lights in the corner lights...

RWD Conversion & a Rear LSD on a EA81 4speed....
+1 RWD FTW! Heh, I miss my Camaro:(
-
RWD Conversion & a Rear LSD on a EA81 4speed....
nope but it did have a open 3.90 that posied every time I took off:D Made it a little hard to drive in a straight line when the back end was facing a different direction:grin:
-
RWD Conversion & a Rear LSD on a EA81 4speed....
Man you wussy! I drove around in my '78 Brat with a FE 1600 in there and would roast them off with my line lock on all the time! Also would drift it like a madman and never had any problems with clutches or trannys.
-
ATTN PDX: anyone have a clutch alignment tool?
Nicky, just loosen up the pressure plate a bit, enough to move the clutch disc around with a bit of force, and use a screwdriver and your eyeballs to line it up. I've done this on numerous Subarus before I got my EA81 and EA82 alignment tools

Oil cooler thought
your best bet would be to get an actual oil cooler since engine oil is thicker then ATF, the passages in the radiator do not allow for very good flowing for engine oil.
