Driveshaft removal and tranny fluid question
Caboobaroo replied to BeefaRu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ummm a bit. best thing to do is get a pop can, cut the bottom off of it, bend it to fit inside the back of the tranny (best if you have a spare tranny laying around) and tape it on there after you remove the driveshaft. Or you can put a pan under it and drain it out when you pull the driveshaft. -
Engine #2... done I think
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am running a FPR Rob and I had it set to 40psi. I'm going to keep with the larger injectors but return the fuel pressure to 34psi or so. I'm going to hook up the passenger side valvecover to the PCV valve, the driver side will have a little filter on it, if that setup works. I'm also going to replace my plugs with some new ones I have and we'll see how it goes from there. You're right Phil, gotta stick with the basics before I go all out, just tried to get ahead of myself I guess.... -

well she still runs but I think my problem is fouled plugs, due to oil. I believe the oil is getting pulled through, past the rings because my fuel pressure may be too high for me only running 7psi of boost. Currently, I'm running 40psi of fuel and larger injectors. I need some help since this is mainly the first EA82 I've ever worked on, modified, and tuned. I'm used to carbs, gen 1's and the sort. So, if any of the Denver guys wanna coem up and help, give me a shout, most of you have my cell number. I don't want to give up entirely but its getting so frusterating to the point that I do. -
What to offer..80 Brat
Caboobaroo replied to DrKrazy's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
just weld up a few crossbars and some sheetmetal to it and call it good. I have a back window if you're going to get this Brat Keith. Go for it, in this area, rust free gen 1 Brats are hard to find. -
I've been inducted into another forum
Caboobaroo replied to LUVMYBRAT's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
those are 13" Jackmans. Also, LUVMYBRAT might inherit my '78 Brat shell since the body on his has been abused and rusted..... -
In total, including engine, tranny, rear end, custom work you have had to pay to get done, how much does it run roughly?

I got an aftermarket Megan Racing 3" bellmouth and had NO rubbing issues. So I think carfreak is right, cat and heat shields are what rubs, not the piping itself.

Replace the car with a Legacy. The only way I'd do another engine swap is A) I get a smokin deal on a rebuilt, stock shortblock EA82T, or I get a smokin deal on a Legacy turbo parts car so I can convert it, plus some help from fellow board members to get it together. Anymore, I want to have a car I can jump in, start up, and drive away without having to worry about babying it, or hoping it starts. Winter is coming and I'll be damned if I ride my mountain bike to work this winter. I've been here through 2 winters already and both have been hell. First winter, I was getting a ride to work and then walking home in the snow, an hour walk. Last year, I was riding my $800 mountain bike to and from work, even on the coldest day -20 degrees! -

Hopefully going to shoot for a Legacy nonturbo. I need something where I won't get myself into trouble. -
I think I blew the ring lans on this engine. Yay.... fun fun. So check out my ad in the marketplace. I'm done, I'm out, lata EA82Ts..... I was running 7psi of boost, ran the car for about 500 miles of around town driving, started getting on it and I think it just decided to let go. I was actually running a bit rich but it didn't seem to be too big of deal.

Cooling and timing issues... '89 RX
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok, I'm using the AAV from the XT intake and I'm using my stock ECU. Running 9.5:1.... whatever SPFI is. Yes, I did buy new plugs, cap, rotor, plugwires. I have checked timing. I am using a narrow band Autometer A/F gauge. Seems to be running about where it should be but since its a narrow band. who knows.... I think I have a spare mechanical fan in the shop somewhere.... -
Cooling and timing issues... '89 RX

Yes, I'm going to get a can of Seafoam tomorrow on my lunch and do a quick through with the intake and put some in the tank. Just filled up with premium. I am running a BOV, not a BPV but the miss isn't great enough to be vaccum related it seems, especially with the large BOV I'm running. Brand new cap, rotor, plugs and wires. I'm also going to recheck the timing to see if it is indeed spot on, also add back in a mechanical fan until I can get a second electric fan. Stock electric fan is a constant on right now, powered by a toggle switch mounted in my aftermarket stereo install kit. Got a saecond one and a potentiometer so I can regulate the second electric fan as far as on/off and speed wise. Overall though, she's running like a champ. Just have to button up a few suspension issues and an alignment but no worries! I did drive her for a bit more this evening and she seems to be waking up more and more. -
SLACKER! I've had like 15 or so and only been into Subarus for 3 years:banana: Lookin good Zap!

My RX is doing a couple things that I don't really care for. I've fixed everything except for the following three items. First off, driving it for about 20 minutes to a half hour, the temp gauge slowly climbs to 3/4 and hovers there. She's running hot nonetheless and I suspect a bad thermostat. Second, idle is very poor most of the time. She'll idle ok sometimes for awhile, then stumble a bit and fall flat on her face. Sometimes she won't even hold an idle for very long, other times, she'll hold it pretty good. I do have my IAC hooked up if you're wondering. Third, she sounds like she has a miss. I haven't looked to see what could be causing it but I believe this is the cause of her idle problem, and I can hear it louder at higher rpms. I'm now running this combo SPFI shortblock gen 2 turbo heads Delta 260 cams XT N/A spyder intake TD04 turbo AFPR set at 40 psi Nissan 280ZX turbo injectors. Any thoughts?

*EDIT* Quick question peoples...
Caboobaroo replied to eddygordouk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got mine shipped from subyrally over oin the east coast. It was like 60 bucks for shipping and I paid him $100 total. Usually they go for a bit more I suppose... -
Ok here's the official thread for an old school meet for the Wyoming/Colorado guys and gals. Lets set a date, not too far into fall due to school starting for some people, snow for me, etc. I'm free any weekend, and usually have holidays off. We also have to come up with someplace to get together, things to do, etc. We can possibly bet together at a smaller park (unlike Redrocks) that has a bar-b-que pit and do burgers and hotdogs, BYOB if you're not driving, you know, stuff like that. Maybe if we're lucky we can get some other midwestern guys out this way to have a get together like a Midwest meet. What do you guys think? Maybe have an overnight type deal out camping? I know of a few places where we can go camping up this way which aren't too far from Laramie (up on the summit about 15 miles from town) with gravel roads and its cool to camp out that way. Time for the ideas and dates!

broken passenger side timing belt. Really that would keep it from starting and when it did, it would only run on two cylinders.
-
best bet would be to find a cheap Legacy in the same era as yours ('90-'94) that came stock with a turbo. Then you'll have everything to swap over to a good reliable turbo'd car which would also have the best turbo engine that Subaru has yet to make (EJ22T).

RX is back on the road
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
oh pics eh? Well I got LOTS of pics, just none current with this engine combo but of th last engine. http://community.webshots.com/photo/302403464/2171799040067339125uICvyJ http://community.webshots.com/photo/302403464/2381973490067339125eJPOCR http://community.webshots.com/photo/302403464/2832625290067339125qbmuhz Yeah I'm going to do some 1/4 mile times with it to see where I'm at with it. Also going to hit up an AWD dyno down in Boulder, CO for hp and tq numbers. -
I'm using axles from a USDM '96 Impreza wagon.

RX is back on the road
Caboobaroo replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Since I'll be back in the PNW hopefully by WCSS9 next year, she'll be sure to make her appearance there. Obsidian Black pearl is the color of choice, along with gloss black body trim and smoothed bumpers (don't really care for the textured too much) painted gloss black as well. -
colorado meet at red rocks awdpirates
Caboobaroo replied to jeffast's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I drove my RX around town and tuned the crap out of it. Still got a few things to work on but she's got plenty of get up and go under her hood now. Hopefully we can have a meet the beginning of September? -
I finally got my RX put back together earlier this week and have been driving it a bit. Been going great, adjusting the timing and fuel pressure but keeping my boost at about 10psi. Hopefully I don't blow this engine because I've done a bit more work to it then the last engine. I'm now runing a SPFI shortblock from a '91 Loyale, rebuilt by me generation 2 turbo heads, Delta 260 cams, TD04 turbo, 3" TBE, Nissan 280ZX turbo injectors, AFPR set at 40psi currently, spyder intake, WRX TMIC, AEM CAI, and a lot of other goodies. Been taking it nice and slow, just breaking it in and doing the tuning to it before I decide to go crazy. I can already tell this engine is much more powerful then the last engine (stock EA82T longblock) and has more off the line thanks to the higher compression. Maybe by September I can take it down to Bandimere drag strip in Denver to see what she has, but until then, it's going nice and easy around town.
