  1. Hey there John, Drive was good, Coast was nice. When I left your place it was beautiful (shirt off working on my seatbelt tan) but it got overcast and began to rain as we approached the coast. Stopped and got some good pic.s on the coast, so that was nice. Stayed the night in Newport instead of Cannon Beach then drove home. We actually had a minor fiasco in portland. I left the car idleing for about 10 min.s and when I got back Jo had turned it off cause there was steam coming from the Rad and the temp was climbing. Well, we found a plastic white (drain?) plug on the pass. side of the Rad. had worked open a bit and we tightened it down. I've noticed it cools well when driving, but heats up a little bit when left sitting and running. I'm thinking this is an issue that could be solved by going to a 2-core Rad. and twin elec. fans. Any ideas where I should get those? I'll figure it out. She ran great on the highway all the way home and temp.s stayed at op. temp. perfectly. Good gas mileage too. I'm picking up the photos today I'll get the good ones to you soon as I get them on a computer. The home crew is loving the car. Everyone said it was way nicer than they thought it would be. (Everyone doubted me.) The family has not seen it yet, still in Georgia. -Noah
  2. I just got back home last night w/ my Super Sube and let me just say it rules. John (Mudrat) built her up darn well for me and was a huge help. The setup is in my signature, so give 'er a lookie. For now I'm gonna look at spending $ on things like 27" SSR's and toss a K&N air filter on her. But now w/ the current setup it's fun as hell. She sits good on the highway at speed and stays exactly at operating temp. for hours on end w/ no variation. It's got some great power w/ the exhaust opened up and sounds mean to boot. Plans are as follows (when money becomes available) : *K&N cone filter *Twin Elec. fans *2- or 3-core radiator *Boost Control and Intercooling The greatest part is that I am by no means hurting to get going on the mod.s because it's a blast as it is and burly. John built some dual tube bumpers that make the car look pretty cool and will be great for off road use.
  3. Well, I'm getting super excited to go get my car tomorrow! John is building some double tube bumpers (front and rear) that I have not seen yet. They should be pretty cool. As for you car, Stup., I keep coming across it and it's definately the nicest example of an early turbo I've seen so far. Keep it up! I would post a picture, but I don't have a place to put them online. And for the love of god, how do you start an Album in the photos section? -Noah
  4. HOLY CRAP. Nicely played. I think that's the best looking brat that I have ever seen. Congrat.s Can't wait to see some action photos. The first thing that came to my mind when I saw that first picture was "Tonka Toy." -Noah
  5. Hi there, I was suprised to see this thread revived. As it turns out, I am driving down to Oregon to pick up the car I'm buying tomorrow. (From John/Mudrat) I discovered that the ea81t is a bit of a rarity when I was sifting through the piles of stuff about ea82t's. I am very interested in what mod.s have been done and what results people have gotten w/ the engine.
  6. Sorry for the ignorance, How much are they? Are they only for EA82's? (EA81T?) And when will they come in? I might have to pick one up. -Noah
  7. I have checked out the sea lion caves, not bad. You guys brought up a good point....rain. Damn it. How has the weather been of late? Hopefully that won't be too much of a burden. We'll see. -Noah
  8. Hi All, I headin' down to OR to pick up my sube from Mudrat here pretty soon and I'm planning on hitting up the coast and Portland. So, I thought I'd see where you guys will tell me to go. I'm planning on going to Cannon Beach then Portland and whereever else I please. I've got a few days to kill, so let's here it. Most important, however, I was hoping some of you could point me to some good camping grounds on the coast as well as in Eugene (not quite sure if I'll spend a night there or not.) Thanks Dudes. -Noah
  9. Subaru Stats That's where I got the 123 @ 2800. If it's @ 2000, that is awesome. I was suprised by the 123, though, it seemed high. Why would the turbo model have more torque than the n/a model (94 TQ @ 2400 - same webpage) -Noah
  10. I was just checkin' the stats on the EA81T and it read 123 LB/Ft of TQ @ 2800. Is that accurate? I was suprised by that stat. -Noah
  11. Free Range - This car is coming from MudRat, but he told me it had the ea81 engine in it. It's got the D/R 5 Spd. and I'm gonna have MudRat do the 2.5" exhaust on it for me. So, an intercooler would not do me any good? I realize that it wouldn't do anything for the bottom end. Does the EA82 turbo bolt on? (The EJ22 turbo wouldn't bolt on, would it?) Thanks. Noah
  12. What would you guys suggest for this? It's in an '83 Wagon w/ 3" lift. (Offroad Application) Intercool, BOV, Boost Controller, Exhaust? What exactly have I been hearing about the 2wd Distributor (or was that for the EA82 only)? Howabout using an EA82 Turbo or a different one? Anything I could do to help the lower end torque specifically? Howabout different cams? Let me know what you guys think/have done. Thanks.
  13. Well, I have been considering options. It's a tough call all in all, I favor the ea81 body style, especially the hatchback, but it seems like an ea82 is the sensible option for my wants/needs. Basically if I go that path, I would be looking for an XT-6 or a Wagon in need of a er27. I'm wondering about the availability of er27's as I have not come across any good options. Is there a list of gear ratios for the ea82 series? What are the people's opinions of each transmission? If I go with a wagon, I suppose I would lift it and dink around with the carb.s and exhaust, then work on setting up the engine I want. So, the main issues for me would be: -availablility of the er27 (for a swap) -which model to go with out of the ea82 series. Would a turbo or a carb setup be better of a lifted subaru as far as off-road capabilities. I just wish I could have a feel for what it would be like with each setup. On that note, Miles, if you are interested in stopping in Missoula and have the time on your treck cross country, I would love to see your car and setup in person. I'd also like to hear what you people think of the ea81 series with a lift (i'm thinking something like 3-4" would suit me fine with proper wheels/tires) with a stock or a stock engine with somewhat higher output than stock. *I really appreciate everyone's time and input on this topic, it is helping me a great deal as far as figuring out what the best direction for me to go is.* At this point, I feel like most options are open. A car and a lift kit are definately within my budget for the near future. And we all know that it will snowball from there. -Noah
  14. Well thanks guys for helping me understand it all. Let's see, to make the er27 work, i need to: -install ea82 springs. could I use different aftermarket springs instead of the ea82? (is it worth it?) -install ea82 struts. with that comes a reworking of the strut caps (is that all that will need fabing for the struts?) -weld in an ea82 lower control arm mount -use ea82 axles -use ea82 transm. (rx or dual range) For the strut caps, what exactly did u have to do? Just bore it out a little bit? The engine itself would bolt in. External things in the engine compartment would need to be placed somehow (such as the radiator) The thing is that it's not too much work, it's just so much to pay someone to do it for me. I figure no matter what, I'll stick with the ea81 engine at first, lift the little trucker and then start looking at a new engine/transmission meanwhile tweaking the current engine. Setting up exhaust, carb.s, etc. I could also install some of the ea82 suspension before the swap, right? (I remember reading about using ea82 springs on ea81's) How does that sound? What's missing? And why can't I be filthy rich and just fork over cash and be ready to run stuff over by next week.(?) Thanks for the interest guys, -Noah
  15. So, with a "suspension swap" in this case we are literally talking about cutting out the front strut assemblies (left and right off the er27) and grafting them onto the ea81 front? This sounds a little extensive for me. I just want to run some shtuff over, man! I take it there is no way around this if I want to use the er27? I suppose I would be able to make do with a 4-cyl. setup. What are the "best" engine and tranny options/combinations out there as far as you guys are concerned. From what I've uncovered, I would venture a guess of the ea82t simply because it's the turbo model with boost-upping potential. Are there better ones out there? And as far as trans., I am imagining the all-time RX trans. or the dual range 5-spd. (forgetting what years that is) The engine I put in I want producing low-end power for some good 'ol mud slinging. Maybe some hp/tq stat.s for the ea81 and ea82 engines would help me figure out what would be best. Thanks for clearing that up, I was unclear what exactly was meant by a suspension swap in this case. -Noah
  16. Sounds good, thanks for getting me started with the info, I'll go snoop around the I-net some more and figure out what I'm gonna do. What are the HP and TQ ratings of a stock er27? Thanks.
  17. Okay, so how much work would be involved in a setup as follows: (Anything I should include or not consider?) -ea81 2-door wagon (they were called Justy's back then i assume) -er27 engine installed -rx full time 5-speed tranny (sounds interesting, I do like the full-time 4wd) -ea82 suspension (? I'm unclear as to what exactly that would include) I would have to have my subie mechanic do a majority of the work as I don't have a place to work currently. Would the er27 bolt right up to the ea81? How difficult is the front suspension swap and is there any documentation that I should take a look at for any of this, namely the suspension swap? My search for RGUYVER did not return anything. I assume that's someone's name. Thanks. P.S. I really appreciate the time you're putting into helping me get a handle on this whole deal. I'm dying to have a burly little sube of my own. I keep looking at big trucks and imagining parking a lifted, powered wagon sitting bumper to bumper with them.
  18. What are the chances of getting an ER27 into a 80-84 wagon? Thanks a lot for the reply. I like to have some guage of what I'm talking about.
  19. Hi everyone! I just found this forum and thought I'd ask a few quesions as I'm interested in a a setup with an older subaru (ea81) wagon with a possible lift and contemplating an engine swap. So, the things that I'm interested in knowing is the model break-down by year as well as engines. (as far as the 1980s models) I'm especially curious what engines can be directly swaped into what cars. I'd love to hear what setups some of you guys have. I've snooped around the forum a bit and really like some of the rides you guys have got! I'm also curious what lift kits are out there for the subarus and what ones you guys recommend. Thanks a lot!
