83 turbo wagon radiator: recovery?
MSSLGECKO replied to Ross's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What model subarus (EA Series) came w/ overflow tanks stock? (Plenty of dead Subaru's 'round these parts) -

83 turbo wagon radiator: recovery?
MSSLGECKO replied to Ross's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, there are like a million places to put it. I'll probably just pop some can/bottle in there when I drive back to school in a week, then find some tank later. I'll post a pic when I put a permanent one in, though. If nothing else, the spare tire mount is definately the go-to spot for anything on these subarus. I mean, who needs a 5.2" diameter dougnut anyhow Question: When I put it in, and make sure the radiator is at the right level, I DON'T put any coolant in the overflow tank, right? -
If I carry one around, it's going on my roof rack - I do like the idea of a holder on my rear bumper, but it's only good for offroading (dangerous in traffic) I am just concerned w/ safety. I would rather not blow up after I flip my car as it would definately ruin my day.

Alright, thanks. P.S. In regards to your photo - I love it. -
I've been considering the MilSpec 5 Gal. tanks, but it the metal construction worth worrying about? I'm no safety freak, but I don't want to die anytime soon. I haven't even gotten my first Ferrari yet. As for in the cab, I'm not sure I like that idea. The tank I have is about the CRAPPIEST thing you'll ever see and I don't like the smell of gasoline for extended periods of time. I'll see what I come up w/.

Well, my gas guage works . . . sometimes - I think the contacts are a little dirty and it's too cold for me to lay down in the snow and get gas all over myself (summer project) I would like to take a small gas tank (I have a 1 gal. just for example) with me where ever my car goes just as some assurance that I won't be SOL and cold. Where (if anywhere) should I keep it? Are there any dangers to consider. I would say pop it on the roof rack and make sure it's secure. Will this pose any dangers to the livelyhood of my car's occupants and/or the cars that I burl over?

83 turbo wagon radiator: recovery?

So, with an overflow system, it's just a hose going from the radiator cap to a small tank. That's it? Does it create suction and pull from the overflow tank when it's low automatically? And I suppose, all I need is some tank w/ a cap that has a hose going to it (or make one) - right? I guess that I wouldn't need an elaborate cap if I just made sure the hose stayed below the coolant surface in the overflow tank . . . This sounds like a 5 minute project that will save me all the highway hours I spend pouring water into a piping hot radiator. Damn glad I started thinking today. (Thanks, RavenTBK) -

I think I have the same thing. Is it just a short (6 in. or so) small diameter hose which goes nowhere and just lets overflow out? If that's what it is, I'm sure that you could EASILY pop in a longer hose and mount an overflow tank - you'd be set. I'm not exactly sure how overflow tanks work (never had one) so, let me know if I just made a bunch of garbage up! -
Rear E-Brake donor found. (U.S. model)

Well, I certainly hope you are able to do it. Let us know when you start working on it. I think this could be an awesome mod. I think it would be pretty sweet to have a set up (for offroad) w/ dual front handbrakes and a rear one. How do hydraulic handbrakes and other such systems work? Would it be hard to incorperate something like that into a cable system? -

Has anyone done this conversion yet? How do you like it? How did it you end up setting up the cables and handbrake? Just thought I'd see how things went . . . . -
Yeah, it's kinda dissapointing that the online warranties require shipment for service. You can't beat their prices, but you sure can beat the warranties easilly. Meanwhile they quote 200/wheel for SSR's to me. Oh well.

*No intention of Hi-Jacking a post here, but . . . How do people feel about buying a tire online when there is no local store which is backing up the warranty on the tire. I'm not sure how the online warranties work, but as I recall from a friend's experience, you have to send a defective tire in to the vendor's [website] factory for the warranty to be useful. Whereas if you buy locally, you have the assurance that you can walk in (or drive in on a spare) and use your warranty.

McBrat - Thanks a lot for the description. I'll take a look at it tomorrow. Later,

The Haynes Manual that I have (doesn't cover the EA81's like I was assured it would) shows something that looks quite different than what I'm seeing here on my car. I went to remove the Glove Box but couldn't figure out how. And once again my manual is useless.

I'm trying to locate my blower motor in the EA81. Best I can find is a brass-colored cylinder w/ a small hose going into the back of it. Is this the heater blower motor? I can't see any wires going to it and I can't see any screws to remove it. Any help would be appreciated. Also, does anyone have a ballpark estimate of what a replacement from a parts shop costs? Thanks.

If you're looking for SSR's, I found them for $89/tire at tyres1.com I also was told $88/wheel (mounted+warranty service) for some Cooper Discoverer LT 27x8.50R14 today at a local tire shop. It looks like I'll be going w/ those. Good luck.

There's some good disscussion of the EA81T engine that you have. My wagon has it and I like it. I would suggest that you wander around the site looking at the EA81(Turbo included) info. What transmission do you have? Automatic? I have a 5spd. Dual Range from an '87 and I don't think I could live w/out it sometimes. As a sidenote, I think that car you have is awesome. There is a lot of interesting things that can and are done to subarus around here. Enjoy

Did anything ever come of this? It sounds pretty cool. I kindof like the whole locking mechanism for the CV idea for welded diff.s That's some good thinking. Someone feel like building some locking/unlocking CV's?

is a 1992 Loyale a good Subie to mod for off roading?
MSSLGECKO replied to 1990legacy's topic in Off Road
To my knowledge, 90's Loyales have pushbutton 5spd 4WD. 80's have the D/R 5spd and 4spd. I imagine you could swap a D/R trans. into the 92. Good luck. -
A Dog, whats the Bozeman snow like today? Missoula got like 4-5"s. Sorry about this hijack.

Anyone consider spinning the wheels of a RWD RX (or RX sedan) on an autocross course? That sounds like it would be pretty cool. Might want to give the 'ol turbo a little more power. . . Maybe use a dif. transm. w/out the center locking dif.?

? Subaruparts.com = Genuine Subaru parts ?
MSSLGECKO replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Good point. -
I need a new oil filter for the 'ol Subaru. People (on the board) say stick w/ genuine subaru oil filters. Does subaruparts.com carry genuine or aftermarket? Here's the URL of what I found: http://shop.subaparts.com/auto_parts/search.html?offset=0&model=4wd&year=1984&sub_model=4250&part_type=engine_mechanical Also, there are 3 dif. results for the oil filter, 2 are almost $30 and 1 is $5; Any clue as to which is the one I need? Thanks
