  1. Usually the copper radiators are painted black, and the center section of the aluminum is natural aluminum color.
  2. I dont use any sealant on valve covers, just a thin film of vasoline between the cover and cam case. Make sure you replace the seals on the bolts as well
  3. If your carb is dripping at idle, have you checked the float level?
  4. Personally, I like the ea81 hardtops and the ea82 3 doors. Wagons, although functional are 2 doors 2 many.
  5. If you go under the car on the drivers side, remove the splash shield ( 2 bolts ) the 3 lower valve cover bolts are easier to get at.
  6. Appears to be a front drive DL. Automatics and manuals all can have issues. Either way it would still be an EA82.
  7. A properly working drum brake system will have comparable stopping power when compared to discs. The main difference is that typically drums are not adjusted properly and not working up to their potential. Secondly the heat dispersion of drum brakes is inferior to that of discs. Drum brakes are much more prone to heat related fade, so in high useage drums do not compare. Drilled and slotted rotors do work well in extreme or race situations. The normal street driven automobile will see no benefit from these rotors. To sum it up , a rear disc conversion , and high quality pads all around will give you the best braking for spirited driving, without breaking the bank. Large trucks and air brake systems are a completely different formula as far as size and weight.
  8. Still runs, drove it onto the trailer. Story is that it had a radiator issue and overheated while driving. They had it towed home, installed a new radiator. Ran badly, so they took it to a local shop. The shop from the sounds of it wanted to pull the engine and completely disassemble for inspection. When the owner decided that he didn't want to deal with it, the shop owner immediately wanted to buy it from him.He towed the car home and put it on craigslist which is when I first contacted him. he then put it on ebay, and I ended up with it. Looking it over, number 3 cylinder is very low on compression, coolant in the oil, coolant smoke from exhaust. I am hoping it is just a head gasket issue, will know more when I get it apart. I want to keep it stock, although I do have a set of Enkai's waiting to go on something.
  9. You should be able to use the rear lsd from an SVX, and change the ring and pinion for the proper ratio. SVX's are 3:54
  10. All carbs do the same thing, dump fuel. Where the real difference comes in is how they transition from idle to wot. Probably any new carb is going to feel better than an old one . Definitely a salesman. Any EFI set up will work better because they are far more efficient. The problem is most folks are used to carburators in performance applications and are reluctant to go EFI. They feel there is to much magic involved.
  11. Yeah sometimes it's a small world when talking subaru's. I wanted one of these in 1988 when I was working for subaru and couldn't afford one. There was no way I was going to let it get away! thanks
  12. GD is right on, all gl 4 speeds were dual range. If the body is decent and it runs, well worth the asking price
  13. Sounds like they were thinking of an air cooled volkswagen!
  14. I dont know, this is too nice, I think it will stay stock. Unless a nice ej22T donor comes along!
  15. Hey guys, wanted to share some pics of my new toy. under 58000 miles, window sticker, all maintenance records. Sold new in CT, spent all of its life in CA. No rust, completely original. Blown headgasket, will be tearing down soon. Will get better pics when it comes out of the garage, was dark when I put it in
  16. Yeah, you can change them without the tool. Carefully unthread the seal retainer, you can loosen it by GENTLY tapping with a punch and hammer. It is very important to mark the position and put it back exactly where it was, this sets the preload on the diff side bearings and pinion.
  17. +1 to Gloyale on the coil, also have seen the pick up coil in the distributor have similar issues:)
  18. The correct size punch for subaru axle pins is 7/32. the longer the better.
  19. If the hill holder is to tight the brakes could drag. I adjust mine so that the hiil holder releases just as the clutch is starting to engage
  20. There are electrical checks, but all they will tell you is if the injector and ecm are working electrically. Probably the easiest and cheapest way to check a injector mechanically would be to swap it's position in the engine and see if the code follows it. Be very careful when removing injectors. Make sure that the fuel pressure has been blead down , sometimes they can be hard to get out. Make sure that you check the o'rings that seal them into the rail for cuts etc. If they are reluctant to come out, try soaking the area of the o'rings with penetrating oil and slowly work them out. Injectors are pricey so you dont want to damage one, not knowing if they are bad.
  21. Hey guys, there has been all kinds of suggestions about ignition systems. While very often these are the cause of problems here is something to think about. If the fuel injector on the problem cylinder is not sealing well ,or bleeding this will happen. If you think about it, problem often occurs under acceleration. On acceleration the duty ratio of the injector increases ( richens ) if the injector is already richer than it should be when the computer increases the ratio than it may be flooding the cylinder, causing the misfire light and poor fuel economy at the same time. Just some thing to think about and check.
  22. The ecm should not have any connection to the light system. There are no codes that would be displayed for headlamps not working. I think that the other posts with regards to bulbs, relays etc are more the direction you need to go
  23. Check for engine vacuum. If your catalytic converter is clogged or has melted down the engine will not be able to expel exhaust gasses, so it wont be able to rev up. A clear sign of this is no vacuum. Easy to test, just loosen exhaust from heads to let the engine breath. If this is your problem car will run much better.
