  1. Yeah the 2.5 is not one of Subaru's greatest achievements. The 97 OBW that I have has been great, very reliable and went 170,000 before the head gaskets became a problem. The 2.2 is a trouble free engine for the most part. It is funny though, we go on and on about this problem, but the other car makes out there have their issues as well and usually dont deliver the service that the Subaru does. If your car is repaired properly it will deliver many more miles of trouble free service. I think everyone on the board will agree, make sure they use OEM parts. This is your best shot at a trouble free car down the road.
  2. coolant temp senders can cause this type of issue, Definitely get the codes and post them .
  3. /\ +1 You might as well just bite bullet and have the gaskets done. You are spending a lot of time and effort , to have the same ending. Head gasket issues in these cars are a little different than most, they will usually run great all the while and the symptoms come and go. Trust us, in the end you will replace gaskets and have no more problems.
  4. There is a good possibility that by running the car with different diameter tires on it, that the transfer clutch has been damaged. Definitely try a fluid flush, and the lucas additive works great. Maybe you will get lucky.
  5. If you can blow compressed air backwards through the nozzle. You will need to disconnect the hose first.
  6. 3M makes adhesive remover, comes in a can or in a spray, wont hurt paint.
  7. So I can assume that they all flow the same? Thanks GD
  8. Does anyone know the changes that were made to the three generations of heads for the EA82 ?
  9. Probably hasn't hurt anything, but if it has they should step up and take care of it.
  10. You can try lubing, but the ones that I have seen do this needed a speedo head.
  11. Welcome to the forum , wonder wedges are very cool. You might be picking up sediment out of the tank. When they sit gas tends to go bad and other stuff settles to the bottom. While running again can stir all this up and suck stuff into the pump and filter. I have had good luck with accel super coils on Subarus before. Some folks on here have reported poor results from hi performance coils though.
  12. Easier to change the pump now than on the road.
  13. Have been doing subaru manual and automatics for years, have never found a 'kit". Parts are available from subaru, but are usually pretty spendy. They are starting to obsolete a lot of parts also. Some things are getting harder to find.
  14. It is the temperature differential that the thermister uses to tell if it is wet or dry. YAY nipper, good call! Butttt, doesn't the temperature difference become relevant to ambient temperature? Sort of just moves down the scale in the cold? I have run into problems with the sensor before, but it seems like they either work or they dont.
  15. I do all of my own work. I have heard good and bad about the local shops, but that is common. You cant make everybody happy. A lot of the items that have been mentioned are just preventative maintenance, this is up to you, but while it is apart most of these items will just be parts cost. If you have to replace them down the road you incure more labor costs. Just take the mileage into consideration .
  16. right, locking the front wheels will cause the car to want to go straight under acceleration. If this were rear wheel drive it would work better because you can pitch the car sideways easier. I dont think that there is enough rear adjustment to overcome the pushing tendency. I will admit that all my dirt track experience is in rear drive cars, but I do have pavement racing experience in front drives. Lsd will give you better forward drive while still allowing you to turn in under power. You would have to slow way down to turn in with no front diff, and while you should be able to accelerate hard out of a turn I dont think you would overcome the slower entry speed. I am interested to see how this would work in actual application not just in theory.
  17. I am very attached to my 88 RX, and have nothing but good things to say about my 97 OBW. Just have not been able to embrace the new cars. Times do change , so I guess I will just sit on the porch and let the new stuff pass on by. And by the way, crazy is a very happy place.
  18. Call me crazy, I really like the older Subaru's , The new stuff is just getting uglier and uglier and way to expensive. It does remind me of an Audi, I worked on Audi and VW for several years, and believe me Subaru problems are nothing compared to them.
  19. If you have decent compression and leak down, I dont feel you need to have the heads redone. Replace the gaskets and enjoy the car. The problem with junkyard engines is it is a gamble. You may get a good one, and you may get one that is no better than what you have. By the way, I am in Reno. And I also have a 97 OBW waiting for new head gaskets.
  20. I wonder if welding the diff is going to cause the car to push really badly in the turns? Might be better if you could figure out some kind of lsd rather than welded solid.
  21. +1 on high pressure. The other thing is most electric pumps like to push fuel, not pull. It may be better for the pump to be mounted as close to the tank as possible. I dont think this is causing your problem, but it may effect the life of the pump.
