  1. Or, you can tell them you have a BRAT, up to 87. Almost all the parts for that are the same as well, and the parts store idiots have a seperate listing for it.
  2. Don't be dissin' the FOX HELMET Just thought I'd post my favorite pic from the weekend: Left to right: Jared (not sure if he reg'ed here yet, if he did his name is jcl16t), James (raverjames21), Zanny Dook, Erik (Miles FOX), Danny (Myoss Feece), and me. And of course... 4 bottles of Bell's Amber Ale.
  3. 70 miles on it and running like a top... I can't even describe how it feels to be driving a manual where it once was an automatic. That auto gave me so much trouble (well not the new one, but the first one I had)... I fart in its general direction. Can't wait to see that video... I actually haven't peeped it yet.
  4. Got my work DONE!!! Miles Fox, Myoss Feece, and Zanny Dook came out from Indiana and we did the job in 2 days. Replaced my busted old engine AND converted from a 3 speed auto to a D/R all at once. Besides getting the job done we also had a great time hanging out. Friday night around 10 the guys got into town... so we hung out for a while and drank a few beers. Then we went out into town to pick up a pizza, and the guys were shocked at the number of Subarus out here. So... we rolled up to the Subaru dealer and I showed them the 300+ Soobs in stock! Went back to James' place ( a block from my house) and hung out some more, and then James fell asleep sitting up as he usually does. Soon after that Miles fell asleep on That 70's Couch. Me and Myoss Feece and Zanny Dook went back to my place and went to bed, by then it was about 3AM. Saturday morning we got up and got some food, drove around town a little bit, and then got to work on the car at about noon. By 12:40 the engine was out, and by 2 the trans, shifter, steering column, and pedal box were out. Then we got to work on installing the D/R trans. Had it up in there by 3 or so, and then we went in Myoss Feece's RX with a stripped exhaust stud out to Citgo to get some drinks and then to Advance to get gaskets for the engine. On the way there we were eyed by a bored local cop, who snuck around to the alley across from the Citgo and watched us get drinks. Then when everyone was getting back in the car, he pulled into the Citgo and waited for us to leave, then followed us down the road. I was driving and thought he was following me, so I turned onto a side street and sure enough he followed. I pulled off into a parking space and he lit up. Turns out he had been following us around because of the exhaust noise. Since the car was from out of state he couldn't do a thing about it (how can you issue a fix-it ticket for someone who will be 400 miles away in a day) he just gave us a warning and let us go. I guess with both me and Fox in the car, the cops are attracted to us like a magnet. When we finally got back to the house we got to work on the engine- swapped the intake manifolds (donor engine was an SPFI block with a carb intake, turned it back into a true SPFI), replaced the rear main seal and valve cover gaskets. Finished putting all the accessories and things on it, and then hoisted the engine up over the car. By this time it was about 7:00 and dark out. I ran up to K-Mart and got an outdoor extension cord so we could run the drop light outside. After trying to get the engine in for half an hour or so, the guys figured out that they couldn't move it around enough using the tow rope we picked it up with, and that we had to get a chain and hooks. So, we called it a night, put the tools away, cleaned up, and went up to the grocery store and grabbed some food. We had a cookout when we got back to my place, had hot Italian sausage, burgers, hot dogs, and of course plenty of beer. After the cookout we busted out the old school video games- Genesis, Nintendo, and Atari, and played for a few hours. By 12 we were all totally beat- Fox had already passed out on my mini-couch (how the hell does a 6'4"+ guy sleep on a 4 1/2' couch??) by then. So... Myoss Feece went over to James' place to sleep on the couch, and Zanny Dook took the guest bed and I went off to my room to sleep. Sunday morning we got up and went to Lowe's to get the chain. With that picked up, we went back to my place and got to work putting the engine in. We had some trouble with the motor mounts, but finally had the engine bolted in by 1:30 or so. Right about then Jared showed up in the XT6. The engine had a stripped out exhaust stud hole, so we went down to Napa to get a helicoil kit- of course they didn't have one. Went back to Lowe's (and checked out some really good looking girls), then to Sears, and nobody had anything we could use. So, we decided to just put it together with what we had and hope it worked. Got back home and worked on the stuff some more, and finally had everything ready to go by 5:30. I took the car for a test run and it ran GREAT!!! Engine is wonderful, and the D/R works great. We went ahead and put my Pugs on and then took some pics. After that the Indiana guys hit the road, hopefully they ended up having a good trip. These guys really are miracle workers- I thought I'd seen it all until I saw them working. They truly are gods when it comes to wrenching on Subarus. After all this work there are only minor things to be done. I need to get more console pieces (see below) and a speedometer cable (see below), and I also need to permanently wire the neutral safety switch, just have a jumper in there now. As we found out... here's the stuff you need to do a 4WD 3 speed auto to D/R swap: -Trans (duh) -Shifters -Driveshaft -Trans crossmember -Pedal set -Clutch pressure plate -Clutch disc -Throwout bearing -Pilot bearing -Flywheel -Clutch cable -Speedometer cable (turns out the manual's is longer) -ALL console pieces, both upper AND lower (oops) Pics of everything can be seen here: http://usmb.net/gallery/Auto-to-D-R-Swap?page=1 And as they say in Germany... das ist alles.
  5. If I remember right the Justy has a 4x100 bolt pattern, which most compact imports use. This would mean that most compact Nissans, Toyotas, Hondas, Mazdas, Hyundais, Isuzus, Colts, etc etc etc will work- BUT- verify the offset and center hole size before buying. I have no idea what the Justy offset is, but you'll need to find something similar.
  6. IF YOU CAN ARRANGE SHIPPING I can get you a perfect color match- CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. We're talking under $50 cheap here, with glass and wiper. May take me a couple weeks to get it, but I know they're out there. If by some reason the silver ones I'm thinking of are gone, I can get it in another color.
  7. I wasn't attempting to be funny or a wise rump roast. All I was saying was if you read the guy's name, you'll find out what kind of car he has. As for telling me to "F off" over this... I'm not even going to comment.
  8. 3AT to 4AT swaps don't work. The 4AT requires a trans computer and a wiring harness as big around as a silver dollar. It may not even be possible to equip a car with one that didn't have it originally; I doubt anyone knows exactly what all extra electronics it needs.
  9. Problem solved- It was the clutch cable. I didn't realize it snaked around before hitting the fork. I had already gotten a clutch cable from another car along with the pedal box, and I had just pulled the cable out of the fork on the donor trans. Then when the tranny dropped, the cable snagged on that bracket, and I assumed it was an extra cable I forgot to unhook. (smacks hand on forehead)
  10. There IS a difference between NA and turbo trannys. The final drive on the NA is 3.9, turbo is 3.7. My NA auto trannys all ran 4000rpm at 70mph, the turbo ran about 3400. Around here the speed limit is 70, plus with all these hills we have... makes having a 3 speed auto no fun at all.
  11. Not to sound like an rump roast, but with an auto, fahgeddaboutit. Not unless you cruise at 55 on the highway. Those trannies simply don't have enough gearing to get good gas mileage. They strain to pull the car's weight in the city, and rev like hell on the highway. If you want to keep it automatic, since it's 2WD, a turbo tranny would be a big help for highway cruising. I'm sure some people have squeezed high gas mileage out of them, but I've owned 4 and have never broken 24mpg. Had an 89 SPFI 4WD, 86 SPFI 2WD, 87 Turbo 4WD, and 92 SPFI 4WD. Every one of them was pretty dissapointing- which is why this weekend I'm doing away with the auto in the 92, and will dispose of the auto in the 87 this spring.
  12. OK... so... I was at the yard pulling parts for my auto to 5sp D/R swap today, and I found something that surprised me... 4 cables?? I have a positive ID on three- the speedo, clutch, and hill holder cables. The fourth attaches to a firmly bolted on bracket on the left upper side of the trans, almost directly above the axle stub- and this bracket does not move AT ALL. I traced the cable and it goes into the firewall under and to the left of the brake booster. The donor car is an 89 GL coupe, nonturbo. Any ideas? I didn't end up getting the cable, so I sure hope it's not critical to this swap.
  13. GOT IT!!!! IT'S ALIVE!!! ALIVE!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Turns out the coil was bad, but the plugs were still good. Swapped in the coil with a known good one and she fired right up. Tried to drive it, and boom- bogging down again. Swapped all the wired components with those from the old carb and tried again- idling at 5000. Turned the idle down, tried again, idling smooth and level at 1000. Took her for a drive and she's running better than she has in the past year!! No more rough/no idle, no more running rich, no more stalling on turns- it's cured!!! BIG thanks to everyone for your help!!! Sorry I sounded like a whiny little biotch at times, I really was freaking out. THE RED BEAST LIVES AGAIN!!!
  14. Yes, got cranking while the pedal is to the metal. Nothing, not a thing. Will check coil and plugs.
  15. It had been running with the old carb (sort of- the float was bad and it wouldn't take turns), then eventually wouldn't start. Spraying down the throat did nothing. This one had been running great earlier today- no trouble getting it started- now nothing. The fuel pump is running, I can hear it. Found a way to get to work tomorrow, so at least I bought myself some time.
  16. Went to check for vacuum leaks and now the car won't even start. Cranks and cranks but will not run on its own. I'm running out of ideas and the situation is looking dire. If I don't get this car running today I WILL lose my job.
  17. OK... I did just what you suggested. I plugged the red wire from the ADS into the proper spot in the plug, and grounded the black wire to the frame. The car starts up easily and idles smoothly now, with no more loping- though at 1500rpm. If I let the idle screw out any amount at all the car will sputter and die the second it starts running without the help of the starter. It seems it is just unable to idle below 1500. When I try to drive the car, it bogs down at anything below 3000rpm- the second I hit the gas, RPM's drop to zero and it backfires out the tailpipe. Then, as soon as I push the clutch in, the RPM's jump right back up. It does this in any direction and (so far) any degree of incline. I fixed 2 vacuum leaks already and will search for more. Possibly this could just be something simple now. At least I'm making progress in the right direction.
  18. Here's an update- I have the car for now as once I get it working right it'll be my ride to work (thanks James!). I got it to run! Sprayed some carb cleaner through it and played with the idle setting, and now it will start right up and run. However- the idle is very erratic, idling anywhere from 2000 to 3000 rpm. Below 2000 it will not idle, just sputters and dies. I tried driving it, and it runs fine above 2500rpm- anything lower and it runs either way too rich or way too lean- totally loses all power and dies, and when started again, runs so low that the tach doesn't register- with my foot to the floor. Then after 10 seconds or so it revs up and runs OK again. My bet is it's running lean as it wasn't acting like it was flooded- I never let it backfire (neighbors wouldn't like that at 8:30 AM) so I wasn't able to get the definitive answer. This was with that solenoid unplugged. Skip- the carb in your pic doesn't look too much like the one on James' car. According to the pics in the Haynes manual it looks like the EA81 Hitachi. Unfortunately this Haynes manual has no diagram of the EA82 carb- it jumps straight from EA81 to SPFI. I'm rather new to carburetors so I can't guess exactly what this solenoid is, but my guess- just from looking at the pics- is the ADS. The only difference I've seen between the old carb and the new is that the new one has 2 wires- a red and a black- going to this solenoid, where the old one only has a black. According to what I've read here, having the ADS unplugged would'nt seem to cause these problems I describe. Also, even when I was playing with the idle and had the car idling at 3000+ rpm, it never dieseled when I shut it down- not even once. Just shut itself off smoothly and quietly. This leads me to believe that this part is NOT the ADS. Any suggestions? I plan to swap all 3 wired parts later today if I can't figure anything else out. Here's a pic of the object in question. It is located forward and below of the choke. It's the object I'm touching with the screwdriver.
  19. Sorry, but I'm not interested in buying another car. I'm going to just drop an engine in this one one way or another and be done with it. As for working in the junkyard... I work in an overpriced, high end junkyard. We only have 1 EA82 and my boss wants $300 for it. I don't think so! Snotrocket- thanks for the offer. If I only *could* ride on over and slap one together I would. As of right now I have absolutely no transportation. Hoping to get some Soob wrenchers together this weekend at my place and take care of it. I need to get this thing going ASAP so I can get back to work.
  20. Well... the whole time this was going on (about a mile) the temp gauge never moved. Either way this engine is trashed, what with the oil burning problem and all. I have no idea what I'm gonna do- hopefully my boss will let me keep my job if I don't show up for a few days. As for where I'm gonna get the money for a new engine....????
  21. Well... my Loyale has been having some oil burning problems for a couple months now, and I think today it finally let go. I was cruising along on the interstate and noticed tons of smoke in the rearview mirror. Huge, billowing clouds of mostly whitish smoke. Got off at the next exit and pulled over... when I slowed down I noticed power loss and rough running and a noise almost like the exhaust had come apart right at the y pipe. When I stopped the car there was smoke coming out from under the hood. Popped the hood and smelled the smell of burning coolant, and found coolant EVERYWHERE. There was also a pretty thick trail of fluids that the car had left while it was moving. After the coolant dried I noticed the smell of oil. Popped the oil cap and found milkshake on the bottom of it. Yep, I think this engine is history. I don't have too much experience with dead engines- what do you guys think may have happened? I'm really in trouble now. I have no car, as the turbo XT is down with a bad head gasket. My job is 30 miles away. I have almost no money. I'm really ****ed now. I'm gonna go get drunk.
  22. Who knows how far out of time it is? It's impossible to tell without taking the timing covers off and looking. Fortunately these engines are noninterference and very easy to get back in time when you change the belts. You're not going to get this car running without digging in and changing the Tbelts, so don't even worry about how far off time it is.
  23. James... try sticking your digi cam down in there and getting a picture of where the wires go.
