  1. Doesn't surprise me if this indicates bad rings. I've known I was burning oil for a few months now and have been preparing to swap the engine. I guess this is just more evidence towards the fact that this engine is on it's decline. Thanks guys.
  2. 150k. I thought if you had blowby exhaust would get out through the oil cap? Haven't had any of that happen, also haven't had any noticeable power loss or rough running. Just have had friends driving behind me tell me they see a puff of blue when I take off and shift gears.
  3. Hey guys... I'm no stranger to Subarus and bad PCV valves, but this one really takes the cake. I replaced my PCV valve with an OEM one a few months ago. Today I had the intake hose off and the inside of it is COATED with fresh oil; the bottom of the hose is covered in oily sludge. The bottom of the airbox has a puddle of oil in it. I had thought I was burning oil from an internal engine problem, now it definitely seems otherwise. What else do I need to replace to keep the oil out of the intake system? This obviously isn't leftovers from before I did my PCV; it's fresh. Also, this car has the modified Loyale PCV system that doesn't allow the familiar clouds of smoke on hard turns. Any ideas?
  4. Why not just use all the 4WD components from the donor car, but install a D/R trans? I can get them dirt cheap up here... come on up and grab one! I'm not at liberty to publicly post how cheap I can get them for...
  5. Hey now... watch your mouth!...err, fingers. I have a happy medium when it comes to the big PA breweries. When I buy beer in town, it's Rolling Rock. When I make a trip up to a PA distributor I get a case of Yuengling plus a case of the import of my choice. PA beer shops KICK rump roast- they stock all the best beer in the world. In WV we may be able to buy beer anywhere, anytime, but the best we can get is Rolling Rock or Killian's Red.
  6. Yep, gonna need a driveshaft. The 5 speed tranny isn't quite as long as the auto, so it takes a longer shaft.
  7. Yes... using 4WD wagon struts will bump an XT up pretty high. I made the mistake of using them on my XT when I first replaced the air suspension. It seemed... odd to say the least. Also, 4WD wagon rear springs have 2 extra coils on them. 2WD XT struts are the lowest that the EA82 chassis ever had. With those installed on my XT, the foot of my floor jack is less than 1/4" lower than the frame rail. My guess is about 5" ground clearance at the front frame rail, which would probably equate to 3" at the lowest point of the car.
  8. NO emissions inspection whatsoever!! However, the car must have a visual safety inspection once a year. All lights and glass must be clear and uncracked, all lights have to work, tires must have good tread, brakes must work, cv's have to be good, etc etc. ANY rust holes will instantly fail the car. As for the emissions- the car must have a complete exhaust system and exit out the rear. This means no holes in the pipe, and you must have a cat and a muffler. They don't actually inspect whatever comes out though, all they do is look at it.
  9. How about an EA81 4WD sticker? Its in the same font as the EA82 one but is raised, textured, and red text on a black background. The wagon ones are curved and won't fit, but the hatch ones do.
  10. Probably a busted cv joint. Being FT4WD, it'll send power to the wheel with least resistance, that being the busted one. Lock the diff, and it's forced to send equal power to front and rear. So, when you lock the diff, in your case, you're actually forcing the car to become either FWD or RWD, depending on which CV is broken.
  11. Would not be instrument cluster related, unless there are 2 problems at work. Skip's digital voltmeter that he referred to is an aftermarket part. It is totally independent of the car's factory wiring.
  12. So, I take it my governor worked? Ditto on the slushbox being funky... I hate mine with a passion. Can't wait to throw it in the TRASH. Actually, I'll probably just take it to work and add it to the warehouse inventory. Either way, just as long as I get it out of my sight.
  13. Where does your oil pressure gauge sit when the car is warmed up? Mine is pumping properly and sits right on the halfway mark. If it's a little lower this could be a sign of a bad oil pump seal. I forgot to add, it sits at the halfway mark while driving- of course it drops at idle.
  14. Tony... my governor gear is installed in a transmission which is out of the car. Would take me 5 minutes to get it out. Before I changed the tranny I pulled the governor and looked at it, and it's good. When the tranny was installed in the car it shifted BEAUTIFULLY- best shifting Subaru auto I'd ever driven. I canned the trans because it had horrible gear whine from inside the diff.
  15. Yes, replacing the rear diff definitely is not hard. ALL turbo transmissions have a 3.7 final drive, and 3.7 3 speed autos are rather scarce. You can use an auto from a nonturbo and it will work fine, but you'll have to install the rear diff to match it. I used a nonturbo automatic in my turbo XT and it works great. Doing the rear diff wasn't hard at all.
  16. First off.... yes, the 3AT's rev that high. I know it sucks, but that's just how they are. Second.... Older model Subarus are prone to temperature problems, usually overheating. If your car is overcooling, I'd say count your blessings, and just put a piece of cardboard on the front of the radiator until the weather warms up. Third.... your blower motor resister block is going out. This resistor is located on the bottom of the blower motor, behind the glove box. It is very easy to replace. Finally.... these cars have timing belts which will break if not properly maintained. Fortunately they have non-interference engines, which means the only damage a broken timing belt will do is a walk home or an expensive tow bill. You should replace the timing belts every 55,000 miles. As long as this has been done and everything else on the car is working OK, you're good to go.
  17. NJ is a great place to live if you're a USMB member. Twice a year (in the past 2 years) we have a big get-together in the NJ Pine barrens. We usually spend the day driving the trails and hanging out. You're cordially invited next time we go! 94 Loyales are quite rare- at that point most people just opted for the Impreza. I love that dark green color they offered in 93 and 94. Once again, welcome to the board!
  18. How about one of those stickers that reads "If you value your life as much as I value this vehicle, KEEP YOUR F***ING HANDS OFF!!!" or something along the lines of that.
  19. I've found that sometimes the spring that pulls the wiper onto the windshield wears out. Bending the thinnest part of the wiper arm toward the windshield helps a little bit.
