  1. It was the first "real" car Subaru sold here. Front wheel drive, 1000cc, 1100cc or 1300cc (Very rare even then) engine, 4-speed manual shift. Available as a 2 or 4 door sedan or a small split-tailgate station wagon. The homepage's image gallery has some scans of the original brochures; sometimes parts show up but I've only seen one car for sale in the past five years (plus three parts cars in Alabama, on the old board, by someone styling himself as "fourguzzis").
  2. I'll do the rest of the soda, paper plates, plastic flatware, napkins (I have a BJ's card). See you in the '73!
  3. Actually I kind of like the idea...but only because I have another NOS 1400 air cleaner still in the shrink wrap. Now, let me try to answer some questions that were left here (I've been away from the computer for awhile). Yes, this is the eBay wagon. Subaru of Gwinnett had it on consignment for a little old lady who (get this) inherited it three years ago from her ninety-year-old aunt. All the maintenance records, plus service manuals (Chiltons and Haynes, not FSMs), the owner's manual, the '73 Dealer Directory, and the warranty booklet, are with it. It has a little over 84,000 miles (it was a long drive back!), the interior is absolutely gorgeous with just a couple of small tears in the driver's seat, the paint is fairly decent. there's some rust on the chrome work and on the original hubcaps (all 4 originals came with it, the aftermarkets are off now, I left them on as cheap insurance against rock dings and dents on the ride back). It needs a carb rebuild, unfortunately, and the points have to be reset. I'm running quite rich right now (around 22mpg with a 650lb load). The tailgate works like this: The top portion is counterweighted just like a trunk lid on an XT or Loyale sedan, you just pop the top with the handle and swing it up. It does lock. The bottom has the license plate and the bumper. Unlike the Baja there is no swing-down license plate holder so it's technically illegal to operate the car on a public roadway with the bottom part of the tailgate down. To open the bottom part, which just swings down like the rear tailgate on an S-10 Blazer, you pull up on the ripcord to the right of the hatch latch. (The thing that looks like a lawnmower pull-start.) And yes, it is a 1.4ltr. For those of you who want to see it: I'll be at Connie's Sat. See Meet-n-Greet for details. And drool over her 28,000 mile GLF, too!
  4. Guys--thanks for all your offers of help in getting this wagon back!! MUCH appreciated and I hope to see you all in the near future. (I'll be at Connie's on Sat., probably with the wagon as long as it doesn't steal Lucky's thunder!)
  5. Again, Paul, my condolences. As for the church, I'm with Jack. There will be more good times ahead...wait 'til Carlisle, or for that matter Connie's this Sat. It's the people that matter.
  6. I'm driving from Atlanta back home to northern CT this weekend in my new-to-me '73 split gate...if anyone wants to meet for lunch, or can spare an emergency phone number in case something goes wrong (just so I have someplace to tow the car for a couple hours) I'd really appreciate it. It's going to be a long drive, and it'd be nice to meet some faces from the board if you happen to be free. I'm planning on leaving Atlanta around 11AM this Saturday, if nothing goes wrong with the title paperwork, and getting back into Conn. by 6-8pm Sunday. My email address is aparker4.mac.com@earthlink.net and my phone # is 413-222-2428 if you're willing/able. Thanks, Andrew
  7. Hi all, As some of you might know...I bought the '73 split gate wagon that was on eBay a couple of weeks ago. I'll be driving it back to Connecticut from Atlanta this coming weekend (the 21st-22nd). If you're on the way back and could forward me your contact info I would REALLY appreciate it. Please PM, call or email me: aparker4.mac.com@earthlink.net 413-222-2428 even if you just want to get together for lunch or a coffee and see the '73. Mods, please excuse the multiple postings. The only responses I got in Meet-n-Greet were from people I know and that live within towing distance from my house. Thanks, Andrew.
  8. All I can say is, we made it. Thanks so much for the GL-10, I'll leave feedback shortly... It was an interesting trip. More details to follow if anyone's interested.
  9. This weekend was the test endurance run. 30 miles from Hartford, CT to Springfield, MA in a '98 Dodge Caravan (Dad driving). 100 miles from Springfield, MA to Troy, NY (me driving, '04 Outback Limited). 40 miles including getting lost, Troy, NY to Petersburgh, NY. Dad driving the OBW. Mom and aunt drove the OB back home, Dad and I got in Skip's new '78 Brat and went from Petersburgh to New Alexandria, PA. (I drove the entire way, about 11 hours.) Interesting side notes: Steering out of whack, needs tie rod ends, carb kept on flooding in town driving and with the clutch in so the car needed to be kept in gear and rolling at all times, or with the clutch all the way in, the service brake depressed (handbrake is the weakest I've ever seen on a Gen 1) and the gas in a quarter of the way, seats are...well, Brat seats, the car had previously not been run at all in over a month--and it had NEVER been on the highway. EVER. Got it up to 75 in Albany (where everyone else was doing 90, easy). Lost the muffler bolts around Schoharie on I-88 and didn't stop to look at it or fix it. (It would've had to cool down for at least an hour anyway.) Loose connector in dash light switch made me look like a fool as soon as Skip got in it. No hood release cable on the inside of the car (it's sticking out of the hood). And to top it all off, the dipstick's underneath both the spare tire AND the A/C hoses. Filled it three times: 32MPG/34MPG (new gas)/38MPG(stopped using lead additive). Each fillup was with premium. Next weekend's my '73. Atlanta, here I come.
  10. Hi all. I'll be driving from Atlanta to northern CT May 21st/22nd, in the '73 split-gate wagon that was on eBay this past week. If anyone is in the area and wants to meet for coffee/lunch/whatever, it'd be great to meet some of you guys in person. Also, if anyone is willing to share emergency contact info (email and phone) I'd REALLY appreciate it. Driving 1000+ miles in a 32-year-old car is going to be very interesting. Thanks, Andrew 413-222-2428 aparker4.mac.com@earthlink.net
  11. I almost had the kit Melissa got (it was part of a package deal--XT6 plus lots of miscellaneous parts, including the kit) but she snagged it first...the gyu I got it from has contacts at SOA, and he's only seen/heard of 2 of them in the states. (btw, thanks for taking it off svxpert's hands, Melis--he lowered the price and I really didn't want it anyways)
  12. That happened to my turbo XT, some Trizol (MUCH better than WD40) and it was fine.
  13. Both my Gen 1s ('75 DL wagon and '73 DL wagon) have air. Supposedly the air in the '73 still works, I guess I'll find out when I pick it up.
  14. If you happened to need a windshield AND a set of pistons for your 360, this would be almost worth it.
  15. Can't be an '83, there were no GLFs then. Most convertibles were made out of '83 GL and GL-10 coupes. A very few were made from lease return and used coupes--I have an '81 DL convertible that, so far as I know, is the only one of its kind. Convertibles with power tops are somewhat rarer. wolfdog--good to see you're still on the board. I still have some coupe parts down here for you. Andrew
  16. I'll see if I can load pics tomorrow... I have a 360 sedan undergoing restoration, 2 parts sedans, a van shell, a '75 wagon and I just bought the '73 split-tailgate wagon that was on ebay.
  17. Well...if only it was closer... ...I wouldn't have a 1,000 mile ride back home I'm going down the weekend of the 21st to pick it up, wish me luck! (And if you can forward me emergency contact info, just in case anything happens--I'd really appreciate it!) aparker4.mac.com@earthlink.net Yes, it's going to a good home. A board member, even.
  18. Right now I have a registerable-with-brakes '75 DL 2WD wagon that moosens wants back...badly...and I just bought the '73 split tailgate wagon off eBay. There used to be a green 4WD wagon in this area (moosens chopped it up for parts) and I've seen 2 Brats and a coupe in the past year or so.
  19. If it hasn't been modified and it's an '89 GL-10, it has an LSD. Otherwise it was optional and most didn't have them. I'd say with 200,000 miles on it it isn't worth more than a thousand--if it's everything you want, in the color you want it in. Even though they're getting hard to find there will be others.
  20. Sorry I missed it...I was stranded (my father had the Forester, I had the Beetle and the van to pick from) and it was snowing hard up here. Let me know if you still need help. Andrew
  21. I can only give you general info since my Justy is a carbed '88. But I love it--great gas mileage (high 30s), much nimbler handling than the EA81 based cars, and excellent performance (considering it's a 3cyl). And they are unstickable in the snow. (Narrow tires and no weight and 4WD will do that, I guess.) As for reliability, I have no idea. Mine only has 17K on it.
  22. Your safest bet is to replace the belts with the 3-point system from a 1989 wagon. They don't have the inertia reels but they're much easier to install.
  23. Lots of little stuff. We got most of what you did, but not many American buyers opted to take advantage of it. Most Soobs here are automatics; we haven't had a Subaru with a dual-range 4WD trans since 1989; LSDs were never popular; most cars here had all the electrical gadgets but not digital dashboards or sunroofs; the touring (raised roof) wagons were available 1989-91 for Leone models; (no EA81 touring wagons were sold Stateside), the BRAT was discontinued here in 1987; and the station wagons never got the nifty little headlight washers though the XT (1985-91 Alcyone) did.
