In 97 or 98 (both outback and legacy) they added an extra post toward the bottom of the door to give the car more rigidity in a crash. Your 96 will not have it, but if you look at a 97+ there's a black post downward of the main latch. The doors have a receiver that doesn't clear the inside of the door frame. I tried to swap a newer outback door onto my 96 legacy. It bolts on and almost closes. The door could probably be clearanced with a grinder or BFH, but I didn't want to go there. Anyway, experience is talking, it won't work for back ones. I'll check in the AM if the front door has the same change or not.

I don't know how first gen stuff swaps, because I don't own one. But you don't want a JDM one.. It'll be in kilometers.

The other thing with that engine is it's supposed to run high octain.

Align the DASH MARKS on the sprockets with the marks on the timing covers. The one on the crank gear to the mark by the crank sensor. DO NOT USE THE ARROWS. THEY WILL MESS YOU UP. The belt has over 200 teeth, that means over 400 revolutions to get the marks to all line up again. This is an older engine, and your sprockets will look different, but the idea how to line it all up is the same.

If it's a rear one, they like to get rusty inside and freeze up. I had one on my legacy that was intermittent-ish. Sometimes it was bad, sometimes it wasn't quite so bad. I flushed the rust out, and it was fine after that. If it's a front one, the bottom slide pin in the caliper bracket is probably frozen up. If it's not too bad, you can heat the bracket with an oxy/ace torch and get it freed up.

Whats broke on your subaru lately.

There's always something broken on my cars... But as long as nothing that impedes the car's safety or ability to move, it's good to go! hah -

Nothing broke today!!! -
The outback has a 0.871 5th gear ratio, whereas the other subarus have a 0.780 ratio. I guess they gave it a shorter 5th gear because they assume you'll be towing or hauling heavy loads with it, and the bigger tires. Which, I have to say, does help when I'm towing with the outback. It's fun for tooling around back roads too. But it does suck on the highway, reason I don't like that transmission. FYI, 4th gear is 1.088

Help identify this steering wheel
987687 replied to CRTurboGuy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have this wheel in my GL. Bratman gave it to me because someone gave it to him... It fit without any mods (besides making a friction ring for the horn) I dunno what suby it's off, but someone should know. If I ended up with one in Maine, I'm sure there are many more kicking around somewhere you could snatch up.
