  1. In 97 or 98 (both outback and legacy) they added an extra post toward the bottom of the door to give the car more rigidity in a crash. Your 96 will not have it, but if you look at a 97+ there's a black post downward of the main latch. The doors have a receiver that doesn't clear the inside of the door frame. I tried to swap a newer outback door onto my 96 legacy. It bolts on and almost closes. The door could probably be clearanced with a grinder or BFH, but I didn't want to go there. Anyway, experience is talking, it won't work for back ones. I'll check in the AM if the front door has the same change or not.
  2. Does it feel like you're hitting the rev limiter? If the CEL is on, see what it is. Some codes will put it in limp mode.
  3. I don't know how first gen stuff swaps, because I don't own one. But you don't want a JDM one.. It'll be in kilometers.
  4. I use napa filters. On my GL that has the filter sideways, the oil pressure gauge jumps right into life as the engine is cranking over. So it must have a drain back valve, otherwise half the oil would drain out of the filter.
  5. To rotate the cams I put gloves on and just do it with my hands. Use gloves though... If you overshoot, it snaps and your finger gets caught between the cam and the timing cover it leaves a wicked bruise if you don't have gloves on. Wonder how I found that one out
  6. If the pads are wearing on angles, or one is wearing significantly faster than the other. Something is stuck.
  7. The other thing with that engine is it's supposed to run high octain.
  8. Align the DASH MARKS on the sprockets with the marks on the timing covers. The one on the crank gear to the mark by the crank sensor. DO NOT USE THE ARROWS. THEY WILL MESS YOU UP. The belt has over 200 teeth, that means over 400 revolutions to get the marks to all line up again. This is an older engine, and your sprockets will look different, but the idea how to line it all up is the same.
  9. If it's a rear one, they like to get rusty inside and freeze up. I had one on my legacy that was intermittent-ish. Sometimes it was bad, sometimes it wasn't quite so bad. I flushed the rust out, and it was fine after that. If it's a front one, the bottom slide pin in the caliper bracket is probably frozen up. If it's not too bad, you can heat the bracket with an oxy/ace torch and get it freed up.
  10. No, you get a full 100% lock. Bratman had a 6speed put in his fozzy, and I wired in an aftermarket DCCD box. Taking tight turns on pavement if you slide the wheel all the way to lock the car jerks and bucks. It's total lock up.
  11. There's always something broken on my cars... But as long as nothing that impedes the car's safety or ability to move, it's good to go! hah
  12. It doesn't take very long. They put the test thing in the rad cap, start the engine, and the fluid in the test thing changes colour within a minute of running. Really easy test to perform.
  13. I should post pics of my dash. My gauges and hvac are blue. No sploches or anything. I'm really happy with how it came out.
  14. How even is the light doing that? I just glued strips along the back of the plastic thingies and the lighting is perfect.
  15. There's a reason they stopped with the silly 5th gear... It's fine as 5th gear is a 6speed maybe.
  16. Only the 6speed has DCCD, the center diff control. WRX does not have 6speed. I've never heard talk about 3.54 and STi trannies, but I don't have any hard information, so I'm not going to say they do or don't have 1:1 centers after 06.
  17. The outback has a 0.871 5th gear ratio, whereas the other subarus have a 0.780 ratio. I guess they gave it a shorter 5th gear because they assume you'll be towing or hauling heavy loads with it, and the bigger tires. Which, I have to say, does help when I'm towing with the outback. It's fun for tooling around back roads too. But it does suck on the highway, reason I don't like that transmission. FYI, 4th gear is 1.088
  18. I have this chart. Only goes to 05. But I've never heard the 06 having anything besides a 3.9
  19. I have this wheel in my GL. Bratman gave it to me because someone gave it to him... It fit without any mods (besides making a friction ring for the horn) I dunno what suby it's off, but someone should know. If I ended up with one in Maine, I'm sure there are many more kicking around somewhere you could snatch up.
  20. The only 6MT that has a 1.1:1 ratio (according to the spreadsheet of gear ratios I have) is: UK/Europe/NZ Impreza WRX STi MY02-04
  21. As I said right above, some of the SVXs had 3.54 ratio. And since it's an auto I seriously doubt the center wasn't 1:1. That would mean they have to have a 3.54 front diff too.
