  1. If your GL is the one in your avatar pic, then you have the first year of the EA82 motor. They did NOT make a SPFI (only MPFI and those went in the Turbo models if I Remember Correctly) until 87. Keep in mind when reading GD's manual, that he is talking about converting an EA81 (the previous body style) motor (which had No timing belts) to SPFI where you are basically just upgrading your EA82. Someone else will have to explain what differences there are in the wiring aspect of the conversion as I have not done this myself and therefore have no expertise in the area. I do know that if the transmissions are the same then there are fewer complications with sensors and since you have a 4WD single range, I have to assume that you have an automatic transmission as the manual trans had dual range. If you are pulling parts from a 5 Spd Dual range trans, then get the trans too. You'll be glad you did. Then basically follow the rest of the instructions until you're ready to wire it in. You also shouldn't have to change the distributor either since both vehicles will be EA82s. Good Luck!
  2. I'm looking for a '96 Outback with the 5spd and a place called the South Chicago Auto Auction of Harvey has one, but I can't get up there during viewing or auction times because it's a 5 hour trip each way. It's worth some $$ to me if someone in the area can go check it out for me and LMK if it's worth it to go buy it. Just PM me or txt me @ 812-three four three- 94 six 2 and we can figure out what your time and expertise is worth. Pics would be helpful from whoever goes.
  3. Congrats man! Sharp looking ride. And 5spd too! LMK if you find another Subie Wagon with a 5spd under $2k. I check craigslist daily, but I can't check all the streets. Ideally, I'll find a 96 Outback with the 5spd, but I can only find 10 of them in the Country on Autotrader. And as much as I'd LOVE to visit the Subie masters that inhabit the PNW, it's not feasible time or money-wise right now. So, I'm looking for something cheap that will do for now that's closer to home (Indiana midway between Indianapolis & Louisville KY).
  4. Nice looking EA82 wagon. If you need more info and help diagnosing problems, go to the Old Gen forum and post as much info as you possibly can about what it is and is not doing. And don't forget to post the year, make, and model. Also, spend a little time with the search function. play with it, try different key words. You'll be surprised how many people have had the same or similar issues. Again, Welcome to the Board!
  5. I can help on the pic posting. Do you have an account on Photobucket or another online photo hosting site? If not, set one up. Takes about 5 minutes. Upload your pics to your site of choice. The to post them here you will put then a name for the link (i.e. 82 Brat pic) then [/img] all of that without spaces. If you use Photobucket it does all that for you except the pasting to this page. As for the Grill, does yours have the Center lamp behind the Subaru logo in the grill? post a pic in the items wanted section of the USMB Classifieds along with what you are willing to pay. Welcome to the boards.
  6. Ouch! yep. that's rough. at least it's not on the unibody. I'm sure that if you can fix teh gas tank, you can fix that though. Good Luck!
  7. Thanks for all the great info. Since I haven't owned a EJ motor yet and I'm going by memory of what I've read here on the boards (and my memory isn't always accurate) I'm trying to remember which years or each motor are non-interference and when the interference motors started back up. I know that interference or non is only an issue if you don't do regular maintenance (which I didn't on my first few soobs (broke the timing belt on my first EA82 wagon twice!)). And the info about the Plug & Play is great as I have little to no fabrication skills (yet!). Grossgary- the reason that you specified the 95-96 EJ22 is because they are OBDII non interference whereas the 89-94 EJ22s are OBDI. Correct? Thanks for all the advice so far. I will be referring back to this thread as it gets closer to buying time.
  8. Thanks for the advice. I like the look of the outbacks better than the legacy, but i wasn't aware that they had additional ground clearance. Good to know. I've seen a couple with head gasket issues for sale. How would I know what's too far gone. For instance, there is a 1998 Subaru Forester AWD Manual transmission.. 170,000 miles, has extremely blown head gaskets. Will start and run if you pull start it but needs work to be drive able. Great tires, tan interior on CL about an hour south of me. What scares me is the word "extremely" in reference to the blown head gasket. If I were to go take a look at it, what should I check?
  9. I'm considering acquiring a Legacy or Outback vehicle sometime in the relatively near future (next 6 months or so unless a great deal just falls into my lap) and I wanted to get some opinions on what guys who have owned the EJ motors liked best. A bit of Background on me. I like to get the most for my money just like everyone else) and I've owned mostly EA82s (4, but 1 is a parts car. All were 4wd wagons which I Love) and 3 or 4 EA81s including a 2wd sedan and my current project Brat. I'm a basic shade tree mechanic (read part replacer), but have a good place to work on cars when I have time and money and motivation so small projects are do-able. I would prefer a non-interference engine, but I'm open to ideas on what other people like. I'll be looking to find one cheap (less than $2000) so I expect to have to do some work to it. Also, I'm in Indiana so Subarus aren't super rare, but not overly plentiful either. And I prefer a 5spd to an auto. I'd love to get a Baja, but I can't swing it financially just yet. Maybe someday.
  10. EA82 can be done, but for the amount of time, money and work involved, you'd be better off installing an EJ motor. More reliable and more HP. Check out the Subaru Retrofitting section for more info.
  11. For what it's worth, I used to work for Enkei where we made aluminum wheels. If the wheels had a paint or casting defect they would send them to the rework where they were shot blasted, then sent back through the paint processes. Can't say we had any warp from that. These were aluminum not steel wheels.
  12. Let us know how it works out. Where you got the Kevlar clutch and cost would be nice too as this is a future project for my 85 Brat as well.
  13. The engine model should be embossed on the left side of the motor if your looking under the hood and will say either EA71 or EA81. A pic of the engine compartment will show the difference to those who know. Once they know that, they can be more helpful in diagnosing problems.
  14. This is the part I am looking to Fix / Replace:
  15. Perhaps if you took a picture of what you have left to connect someone on here can tell you where it needs to be connected to.
  16. I'm looking for Rocker Panels (the sheet metal Under the door that's part of the "frame". I don't think EA82s are quite the same.
  17. Is there a place to get EA81 Rocker panels? That would be another good part that suffers from frequent rust and abuse here.
  18. I've learned to search the repair manual section before I try to search the Older Gen forum. it's divided up into sections that are easier to search and will have fewer posts. Then, if I can't find it there, I check the Older Gen forum.
  19. Look me up sometime. I live in Columbus, IN as well and would LOVE to have someone to tinker on some projects with. email me at 2manetoys at sbcglobal dot net

  20. If you want to rebuild it yourself, this is the write up you were looking for: Axle Rebuild[/link] Then when you're finished rebuilding it, you can remove and replace using this write up: Axle replacement for EAS series cars Both are from the USRM (Ultimate Subaru Repair Manual) Good Luck and Enjoy!
  21. which vehicle are you doing the intake gasket replacement on? Your Brat? and when? You're about 1.5 hours southeast of me (Columbus, IN)
  22. Best thing you can do is ask for pics and or video and tell her very specifically where the pics should be taken from and what you want in the pics. Then it's phone conversations and decision time. There is also eBay, but it's only slightly less risky. Good Luck.
  23. Wow. That's a good reason to do the Rear Disk swap. Not that you can't find any given part bad out of the box, but at least with Disk brakes, any leakage is obvious pretty quickly and not only seen when the leakage is MASSIVE! Just had to replace a rear drum shoe retainer pin in my wagon yesterday because it either fell out or rusted in two!
