I was referring to the coil that sits underneath the fusible links. There is a yellow wire on one terminal and a black on the other. If you splice the tach wire into the yellow one your tach in the car will read. Glo, Glo, Glo...Both of my EJ swaps were from 5 speed Legacies both being year 1990. Meaning I never hooked it up. Ever.. That neutral switch means nothing to this ECU in a manual, how the hell would this ECU know whether the car is traveling 1 mph anyways? Are you sure you're not confusing this OBD I ECU with an OBDII? This OBD I ECU is not as complicated as it is being made out to be. Geeezus.

However, Gloyale, you are right about that fat blue with the red trace that does need to be attached to the starter wire, so it get's voltage while starting. I must've misread read my wiring diagram. I tied mine into the wire that comes off the back of the EA starter itself. That little plug that slides on the back of the starter.
-
Oh that's funny my neutral switch wire isn't hooked up to anything and my car doesn't die at stops?! Maybe my EJ is possesed? Tie the shielding together for it to be effective and grounded? Another thing ive never done is ground the shielding and again. HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM.

That's for making a pitch stopper my friend!

The temperature gauge wire that goes into the cabin ((at least in my 92' loyale) originate in the engine bay off of the big round plug. The wire is yellow with a green trace, i cut mine about an inch off the plug then spliced in a wire that went to one side of a 270 ohm resistor, the other end of the resistor gets a wire that goes to a ground. It enables the temp the EJ sensor is providing work with thw EA gauge, basically makes the gauge read normal. I have 24 other resistors if you want a couple haha. I bought them off of amazon and they sent me 25.

I'm hitting your thread up hard tonight! Yes, you can splice those shielded wires back together and still have shielding, if you really want to make sure you can take a piece of aluminum foil and wrap it around and then tape it all. All the shielding does is deflect electrical noise from interrupting the wires inside.

I think that blue with red trace was used for AC in the legacy so you can omit that. What plug and number is that wire?
-
That neutral is used for nothing in your application, i believe that was originally used to let the ecu know that an automatic car was in neutral.

You can tap that tach wire right there onto one of the wires coming off of the stock coil. I'm not right in front of it but i'm thinking its the yellow wire? Hey, sorry you were having so much difficulty before man i felt awful giving you advice on how i did it because it seemed easier for me. I just figured it would be easier for you as well to run new wires and splice the two ends together (ecu and engine plugs) thats my bad. As far as the other sensors, tps, maf, etc are you going to run new wires for those? Please for the sweet love of baby jesus, make sure all pf your grounds are going to a good central ground. I used the grounding lug right in front of the battery on the front clip for mine.

Excellent, what is that exactly with the big smoke stack? I first thought ferry but no? How about some pics of your car sitting in times square? Or even better handing your keys off to the valet at the plaza hotel or something fancy like that? -
You might also want to try cleaning the idle air control valve, you said it idles great and runs great but it couldn't hurt to clean it if it has that many miles. I swapped in a 2.2 into my Loyale and it's gas mileage was pretty poor so i kind of dumbly took mine off and disassembled the entire thing and cleaned it. After putting it back on, it behaves like an entirely different car. When i say dumbly took it apart i mean there is a very simple way to clean it with it still on the manifold ha. There is a write up somewhere on here about it. That might help.

^^^there's something about that pic that immediately made think, creepin around in a warehouse district haha in love it. -
Damn man, yeah ive got the gold card which is 100 miles free and $5 a mile after that. Expensive at $140 a year but i guess considering a tow from that far it would be ridiculously expensive! That is pretty wild it blew coolant all over the engine bay and not just all over the road. It's also good you caught before having some warped heads and head gasket issues!

The brushes actually ride on the armature and what you cleaned with sandpaper is called the commutator. I have about 10 old Otis motor generator sets i have to replace brushes on all the time and its a pain! I loathe carbon dust! Another good thing to get is some QD Contact Cleaner from home depot (or wherever) and clean the entire thing out, this stuff also works great for.cleaning any electrical part. -

Mine are slow as well, i had been thinking about putting a different motor on or possibly even toying with some different gears or something. This is as far as that has gone. Just thoughts. Nothing more. Maybe when i finish all of the other 62 projects or when they stop i'll look more into it. Let us know if you come up with something! -
Will this timing belt/water pump kit fit my 93?

I'm sure it will work, what's the worst that can happen? -

It lools like the correct water pump, what year are you wanting to use it on? -
That's strange that there is that much binding, my stock cable had plenty of slack to make a nice loop. Good to see it sitting in there. You are going to love the power, i am constantly shifting at 4-5k because it just feels so right! Ha

Wow, haven't updated in a while. I attribute this to awesome spring/summer weather, playing with my 3 year and 3 month old taking precendence over car work! Alas, my wife took the children up to her moms last weds and that first night i stayed up till 8:30 that night working on my car haha. I found a bad set of bearings and axle in the right front. Took it all apart and got it all.back together tonight. No more strange noises up there anymore. However, i decided to take the IAC off and take it apart...i know, i know why? Why would i do this? Well i found many springs and a coil thing. Instead of putting it back together i thought i'd just do a pick and pull. I found one off of a 93' Leg and came home to put it on and let me tell you they were completely different. This ones coolant port was in a different spot and had three prongs for power on top, and the black and white were backwards. Either way i tried it out, the wires with black.to black and white to white it died. Reversed wires, the thing idled at 3000! What? Could not change it no matter what i tried. So long story short, i took that thing off and reassembled the original after thoroughly cleaning it with brake cleaner and reinstalled it. Holy crap! Here is this EJ22 ive been missing, it was like a new car!. Words of advice, don't ever take that IAC for granted folks!

Axle REALLY tight going through new wheel bearing.
Scooner replied to 987687's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well i was able to replace both of the bearings and seals in the front right axle, very thankful for the bearing press my brother let me use! Turns out the axle was worn out where it goes through the bearings, so much that i thought since i've gone this far i better just replace axle. Now it's all back together and working good. -

I searched and found this thread so i am resurfacing it because i am in the process of replacing the front wheel bearings and i noticed when i got the knuckle off of the lower balljoint, tie rod end, and strut i could slide the knuckle easily on the axle! After taking it completely off and pressing the bearings out, i went back to the axle with my bearings just for fun and they just slid right on without any restriction! I've never seen that before, so nonetheless i am getting new bearings and a new axle tomorrow just thought that was a crazy find.
